This time of year has can often be difficult to me to dress for. The sun feels hotter and sweeter (it’s berry-picking season in Michigan so it’s literally the sweetest, yummiest time of year). But as the long-lasting daylight begins to slip away, my mind begins to wander towards the cozy, fall season ahead.
In result, my wardrobe can begin to feel a bit stuck.
So I’ve decided to try something a little different in hopes to make the transition from summer into fall a bit easier when it comes to getting dressed.
Summer to Fall Outfit Inspo: Nautical Inspired Clothing
Instead of moving to darker hues that traditionally signal fall (brown, mustard, mahogany, and um, even more browns) and thicker knits, I’m really loving the idea of continuing to incorporate the coastal, beachy aesthetic I love in the summer time. I want to keep the white and cream tones going strong. And I’m loving how nautical stripes evoke feelings of being seaside while still making sense for fall.
Dressing this way not only helps my mood, allowing me to enjoy for a little bit longer the sunshine-summer feeling I long for the rest of the year, but it actually gives my wardrobe space to breathe before hunkering down for winter.
The key? I believe it all comes down to having quality basics that can be styled multiple ways, with multiple items.
Grab N’ Go Layers for Late Summer & Early Fall
As the temps begin to cool off in the evenings, I’m hoping to layer up, swap the tanks for longer sleeves, throw a cardigan over a favorite dress, or pull on the perfect pair of blue jeans in place of denim shorts. Layering still allows me to feel cozy when the mood strikes (and temps demand) but the thick knits and festive colors can hold off until the holiday season.
Saks has an incredible catalog for just this concept I’m working on. They have a great selection of timeless ladies knitwear, quality tops and bottoms (and even a few versatile dresses) that I can wear in the last weeks of summer as well as transition into fall without having to rework my entire wardrobe. Even better, during Saks gift card event, you can use code AUGGIFTSF and receive a gift card up to $700 (the most you spend, the more cash you earn on the gift card)!
A button up shirt is wildly versatile, and I usually wear one at least two to three times a week. How to style an overside button up? It can be worn alone, over a tank top, or under a sweater. Button ups are great for the office, on-trend for a brunch outfit, and easily styled up for date night. The fact that this Good American button up is oversized and in plissé material? That’s the cherry on top!!
The most interesting thing about this pullover sweater, is that it’s made from linen. The linen fabrication makes this sweater an ideal light-layer for summer, and really easy to transition into fall outfits if you live somewhere with moderate temps but still want to rock a sweater & jeans combo. A blue and white striped sweater is a classic.
Cardigans are a new obsession of mine, mostly due to how cute they are when worn alone as a sweater (instead of worn as a layer on top of another shirt). The contrasting cream stripes of this REISS cardigan sweater would look especially cute on an apple-picking adventure in the fall as well as one those early September weekends when everyone’s sneaking in “one last” summer activity like a day on the boat or dinner outside on the patio.
I no longer underestimate the power of a high-quality tank top; this classic scoopneck style has come back around big time. This style pairs simply with jeans, but it’s also lovely to layer under an opened button-up for a cute transitional look that’s also practical. Let’s be real, I dream of autumnal-scented candles and trips to the pumpkin patch — and the corresponding sweater-and-boots fall weather outfits — long before the weather cools down.
What to when I want to start wearing my fall boots but the sun is still a little toasty? I reach for a simple, cute tee to pair with dark denim. It’s an easy outfit for both late-summer and fall outings. This striped tee from Vince is made partly of viscose, which is an amazing material for wicking sweat, making it perfect for those transitional days that can surprise you with hotter temperatures.
Vince’s slim-fit satin tank is incredibly light and pretty. It’s ideal for pairing with shorts on a hot day for a sophisticated summer look while being full of potential for all the possible camisole + sweater + jeans combos later in the fall.
This stiped racerback tank from Mother?! I think it might actually be nautical perfection — giving me that hint of seaside that I need. I know Mother is known for their denim, but some of my favorite tee’s over the past few years have been from Mother.
As if the tank top wasn’t making me giddy enough, I stumbled upon the dress version! As the temperatures cool off, you can easily throw a button-down or a sweater over this high neck ribbed dress. Slip into some black lug sole boots to stay warm as it cools down.
These jeans look to be a tall girl’s dream, coming in at a 34 inch inseam. Black jeans are effortless in the cold weather months, but still a really cute pairing with a tank while it’s still warm out, too.
I’m not a huge fan of the way flared jeans look on my body, but this pair from Good American made me do a double take. It looks like a mix of flare with a wide-leg jean, giving the denim a completely modern look I haven’t seen elsewhere — and that unique quality makes me want to immediately try them.
I mean…let’s just take a moment for this dress. I adore how the fitted, smocked bodice and delicate straps contrast with the voluminous skirt. It’s available in a beautiful blue, too! It’s a perfect dress for outdoor late-summer events as well as a casual fall wedding outfit.
Is there any other staple wardrobe piece you would recommend for this transitional time of year?
