Autumn is my absolute favorite time of the year here in Grand Rapids — nothing beats it. What better way to combine my favorite season with my favorite shopping event (the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, obviously), than outfit ideas for Grand Rapids life. Even though I grew up in the South and consider myself a city girl at heart (Chi-town forever) I LOVE living in my adopted home state of Michigan, especially in autumn. There are so many things to do in Michigan in the fall: apple picking, outdoor art and music festivals, visits downtown to local museums and galleries, and sightseeing visits up North.
And when it comes to shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I always start with the boots and coats because…Michigan. Then I round things out with some fun pieces to complete an outfit. This year, I’ve landed on five cute looks to wear once the cooler temps arrive.
Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2022 Outfit Ideas: Michigan In The Fall
I tend to gravitate towards the brand Reiss (I’m eyeing this gorgeous sweater and these chic trousers from the preview). Reiss is tailored-yet-modern and I’ve found their pieces to be very high quality. And of course, let’s not forget about AllSaints, my other go-to year after year. This sling leather backpack by AllSaints works in so many ways.
Grand Rapids Galleries: Statement Coat Inspiration
Some of my most-loved Nordstrom Sale pieces would be prefect for a day spent with the unique boutiques and creative individuals of Grand Rapids amazing art scene. I live for a good statement coat and Bernardo has never let me down. I love this large-scale plaid pattern and relaxed fit (plus, check out the big, roomy pockets!), so bold yet chic. Paired with AllSaints cool-toned suede boots, a crossbody leather bag from FRAME, and this gorgeous Cinq a Sept sweater — all items at the top of my NSale list — and I’m ready to be inspired.
Apple Picking: A Reiss Sweater & Lug Sole Boots
You have not lived until you’ve had a crisp, Michigan apple picked straight from the tree in autumn. Well….that might be a slight exaggeration, but you get the point. Nothing beats apple picking in the fall, and here in Michigan it’s a super-popular activity. So what am I dreaming of wearing apple picking this year? This Reiss sweater that’s at the tippity-top of my NSale wishlist, the long quilted coat of my dreams, and these lug sole AllSaints boots I’ve been ogling.
Date Night Chic: Silk Camisole & Designer Wool Trousers
For the date nights when we actually end up at a classy joint downtown instead of covered in pizza crumbs on the couch, this is my ideal look. If you know anything about me, it’s that I love a gorgeously romantic camisole like this bronze Cinq a Sept top — silk cami tops play a huge role in my wardrobe, no matter the season. Also, I’m obsessed with these Reiss trousers and can’t wait to try them on.
Night at the Museum: Snakeskin Print, But Practical
One of the best gifts I ever received was a yearly membership to the Grand Rapids Art Museum (Thanks Mike and Shana!). I visit any chance I get — it’s always nice and peaceful and it’s a great way to learn something new. This AllSaints sweater + slipdress combo in olive snakeskin print is just DREAMY. I’d wear walkable Chelsea boots and bring along this lightweight motorcycle jacket in case the museum gets chilly.
Preppy Up North: Topshop Blazer & Nike Air Max Dawns
Not only is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited but it’s also where my fellow TME contributors Scotti and Amy live. Whenever I have any excuse to visit, I’m all for it — even if it’s just to show off my favorite finds from this year’s sale. And what better way to show up than with a little ‘prep in my step’? You’ll find me in this classically preppy combo of this Rag & Bone Striped Zip Sweater and these retro-inspired Nike Air Max Dawn Sneakers. Plus, this knit blazer by Topshop is a STEAL at $49!
