Everlane’s Cheeky Jeans: Two Cute Outfit Ideas For Fall & Winter

As I mentioned in our special Sunday night newsletter (you can subscribe here for sneak peeks)….Everlane recently came out with new washes in their ’90s Cheeky Straight Jean, including a lighter, distressed wash that I am v. much into.

Everlane’s ’90s Cheeky Jean is a high-rise, straight-leg jean with an easy fit, and exudes an nonchalant, almost-sexy vibe. Think borrowed-from-the-boys, yet feminine. These have quickly become one of my favorite pairs of jeans. (And yes: I cut the hem off and cuffed it.)

Styling high-rise, straight-leg denim (like Everlane's '90s Cheeky Jeans) is tricky. We've got ideas. Court sneakers, recycled Glove boots & the Puffy Puff are in order.

How To Style Everlane ’90s Cheeky Straight Jeans For Fall & Winter

This style of jean is really easy to style with sneakers, flats and sandals…but a little trickier with boots. Since there’s no snow, I’ve been happily wearing these with sneaks, but I’ve managed to figure out how to warm these jeans up for winter, too.

I’m a huge fan of both Everlane’s sustainable sneakers AND their earth-friendlier alpaca sweater. The oatmeal sweater sold out last year, so I was happy to see that Everlane brought it back. (I also have the pink and charcoal gray alpaca sweaters — they’re beautiful colors and seriously warm.)

The sneakers are a team fave (we joke about how supportive they are — almost like orthotics) but they’re just the thing for city dwellers who walk everywhere: chic and comfy.

Everlane ’90s Cheeky Straight Jeans: Winter Outfit Idea

The trickiest part of warming up cropped, straight-leg jeans is always the shoes. Luckily, Everlane brought back their recycled wool Glove boot in new colors, and they’re sooooo good — especially with cute & cozy socks.

Everlane’s recycled Puffy-Puff puffer (no I did not make up that name) is also back this year, and I especially love how it looks with the slouchy jeans + heeled boots. It’s also made from 100% recycled polyester, and at least 80% of the stuffing is recycled down, too. I’ve had this coat for a couple of years now, and can vouch for how warm it is. It’s also really lightweight, and, despite the oversized shape, doesn’t feel overly puffy or heavy on.

Let’s Talk About Everlane’s 100% Recycled Lantern Bag

Everlane’s Lantern Bag is new this year, and it’s made from 100% recycled cotton canvas (the trim is also 100% recycled nylon and PET). I barely carry bags anymore (I’m more likely to just stuff things in my pockets) but this one is soft, slouchy, and just the right size for a quick trip to the drugstore, or for shoving hats & mittens in for the kids. I really like it.

  1. Everlane’s unethical business practices have been raised in the comments many times before, but the Mom Edit continues to accept sponsorship money from them. Everyone has a soapbox and acts they are “woke,” but when it comes to their bottom line, the Mom Edit does not put their money where their mouth is.

  2. We live in a society where systemic racism and racial biases exist. It is our position at The Mom Edit that these issues are pervasive and necessary to address. And we believe it is unlikely that there is a single brand/retailer or company that doesn’t have work to do in this area.

This is not to dismiss the allegations brought forth by Everlane employees, which are outlined and mostly confirmed in the NYT piece, shared below.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/26/fashion/everlane-employees-ethical-clothing.html

Since June, Everlane has conducted internal investigations and came out with action plans they’ve shared publicly on social media – we encourage you to reach out to Everlane directly to let them know how important this issue is to you. We have already done so (and will continue to do so).

What Everlane does well is provide well-made basics at affordable prices. Not only do we genuinely LOVE their products, but we also appreciate the use of recycled materials. Everlane has also pledged to eliminate virgin plastic from their entire line by next year (a goal they are still on track to accomplish) and are in the process of switching to 100% organic cotton by 2023.

True transparency – along every part of the supply chain – is both difficult and complex. That should be, however, the goal for all fashion companies to reach, not just Everlane.

While environmental responsibility and racial justice should not be mutually exclusive, we will continue to feature Everlane to offer our readers affordable pieces we genuinely love from a retailer who is holding themselves publicly accountable for their past actions and focusing on the importance of transparency and sustainability.

We will continue to encourage Everlane to do more along those lines (we’re pushing for additional extended sizes, too), and encourage our readers to do the same.

This entire topic is very complex. We are committed to speaking about issues of social justice and actions readers can take. We also know that our readers understand their own values and budgets best and, ultimately, we trust our readers make their own decisions.
