What To Wear Overnight On An Airplane, Summer

The trickiest part of packing for overseas travel is figuring out what to wear on the plane. And flying in the summer — cold airplane, hot everywhere else — has its own unique set of challenges. We were about to fly from Philadelphia (90 degrees) to London (78 degrees) to Turkey (90-plus degrees again, oof), so I started playing around with some outfit possibilities.

If you’re looking for a few outfit ideas for what to wear on the airplane this summer (especially if a long-distance flight is on the horizon), hopefully this will help!

Cold Planes, Hot Temps: Cute, Comfy Travel Outfits For Long Summer Flights

If you’ve been following along, you know that I ended up wearing the navy Frank & Eileen sweatsuit. It was pretty darn amazing — even looked chic enough for a fancy breakfast at the Savoy while we waited for our room to be ready. That said, the dress-and-denim-jacket combo is pretty foolproof (I wore it on our trip to Berlin…and after losing our luggage, it was the ONLY outfit I had for a week), and I still have high hopes for those overalls. Anyway, for ease, I’ve linked the pieces I’m featuring in the video below, in order of appearance.

Outfit Idea 1: Comfy Overalls

Indyeva Overalls (S): These are almost sold out, but the dark floral is still available here, and the black is available at Backcountry. Free People also makes cute floral overalls, as does Pilcro.

Vuori Tank (S): I’ve been wearing this crop tank a TON this summer and washed it in the sink on vacation a few times. It dries quickly but looks/feels more like real clothes (while performing like a workout top).

Vans: It’s the ComfyCush part for me.

BlankNYC Floral Jacket: BlankNYC sent over this reversible quilted jacket during the NSale, and it was such a surprise win. LOVE this thing.

Barbour Rain Jacket: This rain jacket is likely much more useful in London, and is lighter, smaller and easier to pack. Here’s a similar option.

Tumi backpack: Mine is sold out, but I like the look of this one.

Outfit Idea 2: Frank & Eileen Sweatsuit

Capelet: one size and wildly amazing. Also in a mock-neck style that runs a bit longer.

Sweatpants: wildly obsessed with these. And the shorts (if you prefer shorts) have the best fit of any sweatshorts I’ve tried…ever.

Adidas Superstar: my most-worn sneakers on planes.

Outfit Idea 3: Athleta Sweatsuit

Sweatshirt: The larger neckline is really flattering.

Sweatpants: a similar to fit to the Frank & Eileen ones, but the fabric isn’t quite as nice, and the rise is lower.

Vans: Gotta mention these again. Slip-on shoes make going through security so easy.

Outfit Idea 4: Black Midi Dress + Soft Jean Jacket

Vince dress (S): The neckline is a bit low, but I like it like that.

Free People Bralette: I hate underwire on overnight flights.

L’Agence Soft Jean Jacket: This one is more cardigan than denim jacket.

Adidas Superstar Sneakers: Always and forever.

  1. What’s up with the newsletter? 3rd day in a row it hasn’t launched to my inbox in time for my 5 am alarm? It’s the first thing I read in the morning😃

  2. An oversized, thin cashmere wrap is essential! It is a wrap, a blanket, can be a pillow. J crew’s folds up to almost nothing and it a favourite on long haul flights any time of year.
