Puff Sleeves, But Make It Tomboy: Rachel Comey’s Fond Sweatshirt

There are traditional puff sleeves (with the cutesy, raised shoulder poufs) and then there are the oversized, nonchalantly casual puff sleeves on Rachel Comey’s Fond Sweatshirt.

Think messy bun, not polished updo.

I first came across this sweatshirt at Archery Close in Stowe, VT. Taice, the owner, had mentioned that she has trouble keeping this piece in stock, and, once I tried it on I understood: It’s really freaking good.

I first started wearing this sweatshirt in the winter, tucked into jeans, but as the weather has warmed, I’m finding that Rachel Comey’s Fond Sweatshirt is even better when worn comfortably untucked. (So much so that I now own this piece in two colors.)

Puff Sleeves, Swingy Shape, Uneven Hem. Rachel Comey’s Fond Sweatshirt Is A Total Vibe

This sweatshirt is a total vibe. I've already mentioned the unapologetically oversized sleeves, but I also appreciate the perfectly designed uneven hem. This hem is unfinished, too & the whole sweatshirt has a slightly swingy shape.

For ya sewing nerds, other than the drop-sleeves…this sweatshirt has no side seams.

I’m a big fan of pieces that only look fancy. And this sweatshirt is decidedly that. It is, legitimately, still a sweatshirt. This piece is made from sweatshirt fabric; there’s fleece on the inside and everything! Yet the fabric is (and this is not a technical term here) really nice sweatshirt fabric. The result is that it’s not thick or bunchy, and drapes much better than a typical sweatshirt.

While this exact length does allow me to tuck this sweatshirt into high-rise jeans….I am playing around with the idea of cutting off 2-3″ from the bottom. A slightly cropped version of this top might be fun, and would be a really cute cover-up for cooler nights on the beach. Gahhh…can’t decide!

But my actual point — and the reason I mention my dithering? Tall mamas: this sweatshirt won’t be a belly shirt.

Cropped or not, I love this sweatshirt with cut-offs, too. These easy, swingy tops were made for my usual shorty-shorts. But I’ve also been surprised by how much I like this top with the trickier longer denim short styles and Vans. This sweatshirt is juuuust feminine enough to make these boyish pieces more interesting.

Where To Buy Rachel Comey Sweatshirts

It turns out that Rachel Comey Sweatshirts are kind of a thing. If you’re into the exact one I have, Saks has the best color selection. For some reason, they have two different product listings, with several color options under each. Here’s a link to the ‘peach’ Fond sweatshirt that I’m wearing (as well as a few summery options, like yellow and kelly green), but if you’re prefer neutrals (black, white), go here (that link has some brights, as well).

That said, we have….OPTIONS.

So. This sweatshirt also comes in a long sleeve option as well, with deliciously drapey sleeves.

If you’d rather a V-neck option, check out Rachel Comey’s Covey Sweatshirt.

Lastly, there’s an interesting twist that involves zero puff sleeves: Rachel Comey’s Fondly Sweatshirt. I’m into it.

These sweatshirts are often carried in smaller boutiques, making them a little hard to find online. If you have a local boutique you love, maybe give them a call first.

  1. I HATE puff sleeves. Not sure why but something about that shape just rubs me the wrong way. But this sweatshirt I can get behind! Perfection! Too bad about that price tag though… even trying to rationalize it in a cost-per-wear way doesn’t make this one work. Tbh I wish there were more affordable options on this website in general.
