Thank you to Kohl’s & ShopStyle Collective for sponsoring this post.
It’s been a long time since I’ve hit the road for anything other than photographing weddings, so when it came time to pack for a road trip down south to visit family, I felt totally confused on how to do it.
How do I not pack five pairs of shoes? If it’s too warm for sweaters, what else does one wear in October? Can you even be cute while also being comfortable?
Clearly, I needed help, and some much needed direction.
The Car Coatigan + More Essential Road Trip Outfit Pieces I’m Packing
Enter Kohl’s. I had already sent back three packages from various retailers and then I started to browse Kohl’s and felt immediate hope. After finding a cardigan literally named the Car Coat Cardigan, everything else just seemed to fall into place. I found the perfect solution to still feel the festive fall vibes in warm weather, and even two pieces that took me by complete surprise.
The piece that helped my packing list all come together was this cardigan. I stopped to check it out when I saw that it was aptly named for the car, and then proceeded to find all my other pieces in what felt like seconds (love when that happens)!
The cardigan is available in so many good patterns that it was almost hard to choose. There is a grey cheetah and a mauve that are both gorgeous, not to mention six other patterns including the classic cheetah print I went with. Was I tempted to pick out one for everyday spent in the car? Yes, yes I was.
This cardigan has proved light enough to not get twisted around while sitting for hours, while still being warm in the case that your traveling companions prefer the AC blasting. The pockets are big enough for throwing your phone and wallet in for stretch breaks, and I love how it looks paired with leggings (which are a travel go-to for me).
Fit notes: I’m wearing a medium, my normal size, which is ideal for light layering. I would go a size up if you want to throw it over something thicker.
New Favorite Leggings (Featuring Magical Shaping)
Remember how I said I found two pieces that took me by complete surprise? These leggings and boots.
First of all, I don’t remember the last time I purchased a pair of leggings that wasn’t mainly for athletic purposes, but when I tried on these “Live-in High Rise Leggings” by Vera Wang I was hooked. They are a heavier, cotton-forward feel as opposed to the kinds I would go for a run in, which makes them feel more like pants, while still having the magic shaping and soft stretch of your favorite pair of leggings.
The waistband is where all the magic is, as it’s a wide band that feels (and looks) incredibly flattering on. The magic waistband also keeps the leggings perfectly in place while running around with a baby at rest stops, climbing into the trunk to find diapers, and all the other chaos of travel. It’s hard to impress me with a pair of leggings, but these are so good (and hello, under $30).
The 1 Pair Of Boots To Pack
And the combat boots? Ohhh, the combat boots. Incredibly easy to slip on and off thanks to the zipper, these became the solution to my shoe packing dilemma. They are phenomenally comfortable (replacing sneakers), easy to wear (replacing the sandals/car shoes), and yet chic enough to be paired with your favorite fall sweaters! Did I mention they also come in a gorgeous olive color?
Can’t Forget A Graphic Tee
Just when I thought my hunt for the perfect packing pieces was complete, I stumbled upon Kohl’s fall graphic tees selection. Not only are there so many good ones to choose from, but this festive tee (available in 13 other designs) turned out to be just the layer I needed when our cider mill pit stop ended up being 80 degrees.
If I hadn’t been trying to pack smart, I would have also grabbed this 100% organic cotton tee from LC’s line (the one that reads “make your own magic,” but they’re all amazing) and this hysterical one (but who am I kidding, I’m probably still going to grab it when I’m back home to wear in November). Once you start looking you almost can’t stop. These tees are the perfect fall piece for all my warm-weather-living friends (or even to pair under your car cardigan).
Thank you SO MUCH to Kohl’s for sponsoring this post! You saved the day by coming through with the cutest and comfiest pieces for Fall. It was such an honor to be able to share my favorite pieces!
