Easiest summer outfit ever? A fitted mini dress layered under an oversized denim jacket. Add sneakers for running errands, cute sandals for a dinner out, flip flops for the beach…it works for pretty much anything.
And I found the perfect layering dress — from Old Navy, who’s been acing it lately. It’s long been my go-to for the kids, but the dresses for women are SO good right now.
Old Navy has a new BodLove line featuring a “body-positive collection of fitted, curve-hugging dresses” and after trying (and loving) this halter midi dress, I was sold. So I decided to try the sleeveless rib-knit mini dress (also from the BodLove collection), and now I want all the colors.
Smokin’ Summer Outfit: A Curvy Mini Dress & An Oversized Jean Jacket
This dress is made from 96% cotton and 4% spandex — so it’s breathable for hot summer weather but also has some stretch to make it comfy to move around in. The care instructions say to wash it on the gentle cycle and hang to dry, but…I accidentally threw it in a regular cycle and the dryer, and it was fine. (I like to make things as easy as possible.)

It was perfect to layer under this distressed jean jacket I’ve been wanting to try forever. Reviewers RAVE about it, and I agree it’s such a good one. I love the relaxed, slightly oversized fit and rigid-but-still-soft denim. In regular, tall and petite sizes XS to 4X, it also comes in a classic, slightly darker wash (Birdie), but I love the lighter color for summer.

And speaking of colors, this mini dress comes in a TON of them. I’m wearing Seaborne here, but it also comes in white, black, and a gorgeous bright yellow as well as pink, green and tan.

It doesn’t have a built-in bra, but the neckline is perfect for a racerback (although a strapless bra would work as well — this one is my favorite). I’m wearing a racerback bralette here, and the straps are completely covered from the back.

This Old Navy mini dress comes in regular, petite and tall sizes XS to 4X. I’m wearing a petite small here, and it was just about as short as I’d want to go (I’m 5’4″). I also tried the petite medium, and while it worked, it bunched up a bit more around the waist so I stuck with the small. (I wore my favorite boy-short shapers under it to try to avoid panty lines.)

Greenlea picked out this adorable white tiered midi dress. It’s perfect for summer: Made from a cotton-rayon blend, it’s lightweight, cool and comfy. She loved the fabric, and the ruffles/tiers on the bottom are perfect for twirling. (It also comes in bright yellow, which I now want to get for her. 😂)
