Little black dresses are kiiind of my thing. They’re definitely my go-to in summer (and even in the winter I’m always looking at ways to wear them in frigid Marquette temperatures). I love their versatility: dress them up, dress them down…they’re just so easy.
I always pack at least one LBD for trips (and sometimes two to three), regardless of where I’m going, especially during the summer.
Little black dresses can double as cover-ups, date night outfits and everything in between, really. Which is why I was so excited to stumble over this fancy-but-not-too-high-priced dress the other day.
Looks Fancy, Feels Comfy: This Ruched Midi Dress Is Under $50
This is the exact kind of dress I probably would have scrolled right past had I been browsing online, but since I found it in-store, I was able to feel the soft, stretchy and not-too-thin fabric for myself. I knew it would be an awesome dress for summer…if it fit. So I grabbed three sizes (s/m/l) and tried them all on.
The medium fit perfectly. It wasn’t so tight that I was self-conscious about it, but it didn’t hang loosely and out of shape on my body either. The dress is form-fitting enough to highlight my curves and loose enough to be super-comfortable. The fabric is thick enough that it doesn’t show off every little lump and bump and is pretty forgiving — something that isn’t necessarily apparent from just seeing it online. (It also comes in a gorgeous red grenadine color that’s perfect for summer!)
The neckline of this dress is probably my favorite part. I like the fact that it doesn’t have to be tied and just slips on over your head. It helps to make it fancier somehow…but it could just as easily be worn as a cover-up over a swimsuit with flip flops as it could be worn with heels and an updo. Here I’m just wearing it without a bra (be free, girls!), but this strapless bra would work great underneath. (I also have these nipple covers but I have yet to try them out…they have great reviews, though!)
I have to shout out these comfy sandals as well. They’re the kind of simple shoe I’m always looking for (classic toe and ankle straps) but are flats. They’re easy to walk in and go just as well with denim cut-offs as they do with LBDs. And like the dress, they only look fancy; they’re under $60 and are often on sale for even less!
