Lately I’ve been feeling some kind of way. I’m sick of sweatpants, jeans sometimes feel like a bridge too far, and any sort of fussy, zippered dress that pinches my waist is…out. This is one part pandemic and one part the aging process (I can’t even bring myself to type out ‘pre-menopausal,’ so let’s just skip over that part) but I’ve found myself staring longingly at…shapeless dresses.
Found: Surprisingly Flattering Shapeless Maxi Dresses
After much perusing online, I finally ordered two of them, fully intending to send them back. But designers do have a few tricks up their sleeves, so these two pieces are actually sneaky flattering. Also? They’re both forgiving on a soft stomach, even in seriously hot weather.
To quote Amy (who also happened to photograph this nonsense)…there’s something v. Mary Kate & Ashley about these dresses. Now we’re both fans.
Staud Vincent Maxi Shirt Dress
Truth be told, it was the sleeves that got me. Staud’s Vincent Maxi Shirtdress is made from a lightweight cotton poplin, and is dead easy to wear. There’s no tricky bra required, and it looks surprisingly luxe. It’s a perfect dress for entertaining at home, running errands, or even doing school drop-off. Yet it’s cute enough for date night (especially if you unbutton it a bit). I was surprised by how much Mike likes this one.

Everlane’s Flowy Romper

The back on Everlane’s flowy romper is just so pretty, and I know it looks like a dress, but don’t be fooled: it’s 1000% romper.
It’s suuuuuper lightweight, making this one of the most comfortable pieces I’ve ever worn. It’s also fully adjustable. I like the back nice and low, but you can tie the straps tighter (and higher) if you prefer.

Thoughts? Actually…I’m not sure I even care. 😉 They’re THAT comfortable.

This is the fashion validation this 44 year old mom needed!
Samesie! Yes! You are not alone in this! I also like this price point from Target and it has pockets!

I’m also feeling the “I don’t give a F” vibe. I think I’m
going to try the Free People off the shoulder dress and maybe the romper. Rompers always give me pause because of the whole bathroom situation. 🤔
Fair point. But let me know what you think! I keep eyeing up that dress, too.
Have you shopped shapeless dresses from The Tiny Closet yet? Black-owned, sustainable lux fabrics – so gorgeous. I just got 2 pieces & can’t wait to wear them. Online shop is closed for now due to back-orders but reopening 9/1.

Yup – I have her Tourist dress!! (Which I don’t think she’s making anymore, but all of her stuff is GORG).
Yes! I love this. I found this (basically) shapeless dress at Anthro that would be perfect for a summer wedding, but the price point is … more than I was hoping to spend this time. If anyone else is looking for a gorgeous blue and white maxi for a fancy party, here it is! https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/sachin-babi-palmer-dress?category=SEARCHRESULTS&color=048&searchparams=q%3Dfloral%2520maxi%2520blue&type=STANDARD&quantity=1
OMG that’s gorgeous. I love how it has the illusion of shape, too.
Long-time reader here – I love these dresses, especially in the doldrums of August!
Another fantastic brand with some of my favorite flowy dresses is Tonle – plus they’re sustainable (dead stock materials), ethical in their production, size inclusive, and embrace all sorts of gender expression.

Ooh, yep. I’m feeling this. Last summer was the summer of the caftan; this is the summer (and fall?) of the shapeless dress. Is it my wishful thinking, or do these feel really current and stylish? The Staud, for sure.
Love both of these options. Would a short person (5’2) need to hem the romper?
Well…I’m barely 5’3″, so…. 🙂
Hi, Can you please tell me what colors are you using on your eyes and nails? You look amazing!
I just pick the gel manicure that looks the most like that old Chanel Vamp polish. 🙂 In terms of the eyes, I’m using an old Bobbi Brown palette my sister gave me, and am almost out. As soon as I find it, I’ll let you know.
I think the appeal of shapeless dresses in our 40s is definitely a Thing. The beginnings of the older lady “I love how it feels to wear and dont care what anyone thinks” vibe. Although these manage to also look amazing. I think the more shapeless a dress, the more important the fabric. It can succeed just by having good drape/movement or texture or an amazing colour or print.
Ooooo…this is a good point!!
