Nothing says fall like a warm and cozy sweater dress. Right around this time every year, I put away all my light and breezy summer clothes and pull out all things warm and snuggly. I look forward to wearing my sweater dresses every year. They’re hands-down my favorite warm and snuggly thing to wear once the air grows crisper and the leaves start to change. And a sweater dress adds a touch of elegance that comfy sweats can’t quite compete with. To me, sweater dresses are the epitome of fall fashion, where style meets serious comfort.
These 5 Sweater Dresses Are Cozy, Elegant & Under $80
To our long time readers, it’s probably no surprise I’m writing about sweater dresses AGAIN. This is something I’ve been doing for years now. But you know what? They work. They’re just so easy — layer on top of base layers if it’s cold, add some boots and GET OUT THE DOOR. I especially love packing them for trips because they take up little room in a suitcase and can easily be dressed up or down. (And my favorite thing to wear on a plane when it’s cold.) They’re cozy, they’re comfy, they’re versatile, and all five below are under $80. Woot!
*And if you’re in need of some inspiration on how to style them…check out this post from last year where I styled up a basic sweater dress nine different ways.
1. The Best Sweater Dress (My Overall Fave)
This sweaterdress is the overall winner if I have to pick just one (I mean…I didn’t, though 😂). It’s super soft and the fabric is lighter — not heavy and thick. The drape is perfect because it skims over curves instead of being too clingy or tight and I love the side slit for both the ease of movement when walking and the shape it creates. This is just such an easy throw-on-and-go option. (Also in brown!)
2. The Most Comfortable Sweater Dress
This one is insanely soft and comfortable. I pretty much never want to take it off. The sizing is a bit tricky as it runs really big. In the picture below I’m wearing the XXS/XS (I’m usually a 6/8, small or medium in dresses) and the V-neck neckline is a bit higher than I’d typically like, but the drape of the rest of the dress is perfect. I love the monochromatic ivory color with the boots! (The dress also comes in black and burgundy.)

dress (XXS-XS left, S-M right) | boots
I like that it has slits on either side and the longer length is perfect to pair with taller boots. I’m wearing the S-M in the picture below (right), and it’s obviously a bit more oversized but I think I may prefer that. (Let me know your thoughts in the comments!)
3. The Shift Sweater Dress
I love the texture on this one. In the past, I’ve had experience with Topshop dresses running really big. So, per reviews, I sized down to an XS and the fit was perfect. This one has two small slits on the side, so if you’re taller (I’m 5’4″) you might want to add a slipdress underneath. It also comes in black, which would look awesome with patterned tights and moto boots!
4. The V-Neck Sweater Dress
I love a good turtleneck in the fall and winter but sometimes I just want a V-neck. Let the neck breathe! (I can always throw on a scarf, right?) I tried this one in two different sizes and colors because I liked them both. Still not sure which one I’m keeping, but I will be keeping one. At least. 😉 The tan color I’m wearing above is a S…
And the green is an XS. The biggest difference in sizing was the length. The green is slightly more form-fitting, but definitely shorter. This one can be dressed down with Uggs and socks or dressed up with taller boots so it’s great for everyday wear.
5. The Crewneck Sweater Dress
This one may be giving Oscar the Grouch vibes, but I love it! It’s thicker and super warm — the coziest of the bunch. And true to Topshop sweater dress trends, this one also runs big. I’m wearing the XS here, but according to the size chart that’s a size 2. (The model is wearing a more of an oversized look if you click through the link.) It also comes in stone, a lighter creamy taupe color as well.
Bonus: The Super Lightweight Sweater Dress
Ok, so I thought this fabric was going to be like the others, but it’s much lighter and more like a heavy shirt rather than a sweater dress. It’s super soft and really comfy, though, so I had to include it. It’s not as warm as the others, but it works well for transitional weather and will be great for layering. (It also comes in black and a really pretty bright red color.)
