Sweater dresses are my jam, especially in the winter. This year I’ve been loving the longer, midi versions with booties or tall boots because I can throw tights or leggings underneath and layer them up if it’s really cold.
In fact, my favorite travel/airport outfit is this cream sweater dress from Nordstrom, paired with these surprisingly comfortable Naturalizer boots and this (wildly soft!) scarf from Free People. My trick is to layer it all over my favorite warm leggings, a cami (er, brami, if you will) and even a slip dress if I need more warmth. I kid you not, someone stopped me in the terminal and thanked me for “being elegant.” (Little did he know how many layers were under that look.)
Warm, comfy and elegant? Yes, please!
Warm, Comfy & Elegant: 7 Cozy Sweater Dresses Under $100 (A Try-On)
Since I’ve been wearing this long-sleeve, midi sweater dress so much (I have it in both cream and black — it’s that good), I recently ordered a bunch of sweater dresses to try — all under $100 (with one exception) — and I need your help deciding which one(s) to keep.
Let’s start with my favorite…
1. French Connection Babysoft Mock-Neck Sweater Dress
dress (M, also at Nordstrom) | boots
I LOVE this French Connection midi dress. It also comes in camel, black and a dark burgundy (on sale!). The side slit, the fit, the feel — everything about this dress is on point. It runs a bit small. The small was very tight and formfitting, and I’m wearing a medium here.
2. Vero Moda Doffy Long-Sleeve Sweater Dress
Made from recycled polyester, this Vero Moda midi sweater dress is surprisingly soft. It is lightweight, has a lot of stretch and is SO very comfortable. This one would be really easy to layer. (Also in black and a pretty sage green.)
3. Topshop Boxy Ribbed Funnel-Neck Long-Sleeve Sweater Dress
This long-sleeve knit dress comes in regular and petite sizes XS to XL. Topshop sweater dresses typically run big, and this one is no exception — I’m wearing a regular XS here, and if I wanted a fit more like the model, I would probably want to go with a petite XS. Also in black, this sweater dress it would look awesome over lacy tights and tall boots!
4. Treasure & Bond Long-Sleeve Sweater Dress
This slouchy Treasure & Bond knit dress is on sale! It definitely needs some sort of slip or slip dress underneath, but it would make a great transitional outfit from winter to spring. I love the beige myself, but it also comes in a pretty rust color (that’s 40% off!).
5. WAYF x Jourdan Sloane Sophie Feather-Cuff Long-Sleeve Sweater Dress
I’m loving feather details lately, and the sleeves on this long-sleeve sweater dress by WAYF sold me! This one is also on sale (41% off!) and comes in a gorgeous green that goes in and out of stock.
*One review says it runs small and one says big… After trying it, I’d say the camel color runs slightly big and the green is TTS.
6. WAYF x Jourdan Sloane Diane Half-Zip Long-Sleeve Sweater Minidress
This WAYF half-zip sweatshirt dress is a really easy layering piece when you want to be comfy and still look cute. It would pair really well with leggings and boots, and I love the zip collar.
The color I’m wearing is not on sale, but the gray is 40% off. After reading reviews saying it runs big, I went with a small and would say it does run a tad big (I’m usually a 6), but not drastically so.
7. Karen Kane Long-Sleeve Sweater Dress
So, this Karen Kane sweater dress is the one exception to the under-$100 rule, but at $128 it’s not too, too expensive. It’s sustainably sourced (60% recycled polyester) and is more substantial thanks to a touch of wool in the fabric. This dress runs big: I’m wearing the XS/2 here (and am definitely not a size 2), and it still fits slightly oversized, which I like. The neckline feels more like a mock-neck sweater dress on me than the pictures online, so keep that in mind!
