Trousers Are The New Sweatpants (Allow Me To Explain)

Ever since last summer, I’ve been watching something very interesting take place in the world of fashion as it plays out on my social media feeds.

It’s no secret that sweatpants were officially promoted from sloppy to stylish during the pandemic — and they’ve been holding strong on the trends list (bonus points if you wear a matching set). But I’ve been noticing another pair of pants move in and take over those same easy, casual, street-style outfits…

Shockingly, I’m talking about trousers.

Trend Alert: wear your trousers just like you would sweatpants.

Trend Alert: Wear Your Trousers Just Like You Would Sweatpants

In recent memory, trousers have most commonly been as office wear and with dressier outfits, often paired with delicate tops and heels, perhaps even a matching suit jacket. Trousers make me think of crisp, tailored outfits.

But like everything exciting in the world of fashion, trousers are now being worn for the exact opposite purpose of how we’ve come to think of them.

An easy way to understand the trend? Wear your trousers just like you would sweatpants.

Find Your Perfect Summer Trouser

I began experimenting with how to casually style trousers this past winter, hoping to make pleated slacks feel purposeful yet effortless in everyday outfits. As the weather gets warmer and warmer, I feel more compelled to wear pants in the most casual of ways.

Quite honestly, once I started experimenting with styling trousers and pleated pants as I would sweatpants, they started to make more sense to me.

Trousers, especially pleated ones, are, uhm, billowy. They’ve always had more fabric to them than I’ve ever understood for dressier looks, but when wearing them casually, that extra pleated fabric works well overall to create a relaxed vibe.

For a look that is as easy as “I just rolled out of bed” yet appears more put together, I recommend sticking to a pair of trousers that has a proper button, zipper, or clasp closure. Even if you’re searching for linen slacks for summer, avoiding the drawstring or elastic waist gives a casual outfit that updated, purposeful look trousers are better known for.

With trousers, I have found it easiest to achieve a casual streetwear style by pairing them with a graphic tee or dad sneakers as the hero piece.

To make the look feel more summery, opt for a white or ivory pair of slacks, add your favorite easy tank top and slip into minimal flip-flops. Basically, the more casual the surrounding pieces, the better.

Belt loops are a bonus if you want to tie in more accessories.

And speaking of accessories, including pieces such as baseball caps and slouchy bags is a great way to avoid the “I’m headed to the office” appearance and drive home the casual message.

Trousers are an easy way to elevate your summer wardrobe without making any other changes. But what do you think — would you rock trousers as you do sweatpants?

Trousers started to work for me once I started styling them as I would sweatpants. F'real. I keep it casual with an oversized Nike T-shirt & dad sneakers.

  1. Actually just bought a pair of legit, wide-leg trousers last night (surprising myself in the process!). They fit beautifully, felt really good, and just seemed like “ah, proper pants,” – but why on earth do I need proper pants? I work from home. I dunno. But I liked them!
