I recently moved across the country, from Northern Michigan to Southern California, and have discovered a very big problem…
I only have winter clothing. Thick, wooly, warm, winter clothing.
Other than two pairs of denim shorts and a handful of T-shirts, I’m serious, my closet is all blizzard-approved. I even had my mother-in-law in a fit of giggles as she watched me pull out the 20th fleece jacket from my moving boxes as we sat sweating in my humid 70-something-degree bedroom (in mid-October).
So, I swiftly decided it’s the perfect time to really overhaul my closet and figure out what works for me now.
I turned to my favorite retailer of the past year, Gap (who else?!), to scoop up a few new items that are more appropriate for, uhm, coastal California winter, while simultaneously drooling over Gap’s pieces for true cold-winter-climates — and even dreaming up gift lists for the upcoming holiday season (because Gap. Has. It. ALL).
Updating My Winter Outfits With Gap Puffer Vests: Not In Michigan Anymore, Toto
First up on Amy’s California Closet Overhaul: a new kind of winter clothing.
I’m thinking fewer heavy coats, more versatile vests.
I’m a sucker for a good vest, partly because I feel like I can actually style them up with my outfits, versus a jacket that can sometimes cover my outfits. Plus, a good quality vest can still provide the cozy factor (without the overheating element).

I initially caught myself drooling over Gap’s Duvet Wrap Puffer Coat (as my Michigan-native heart would), but when I snapped back into my current reality, I was elated to find the Duvet Wrap Puffer Vest — literally just what I needed.
I grabbed a second vest to try, Gap’s Recycled Lightweight Puff Vest, and styled them both up for the cooler mornings ahead.
Gap’s Duvet Wrap Puffer Vest Is Shockingly Flattering
The first thing that drew me to Gap’s Duvet Wrap Puffer Vest is that I’ve never seen one quite like it.
The oversized shoulders, the irresistibly cozy material, and the waist wrap to help with the bulk that can oftentimes be associated with dressing for winter?! All of it was a “yes, yes, yes” from me.
While I think the Duvet Wrap Puffer Vest can elevate just about any outfit, I was inspired to wear the vest with some chunky heels to see if it could withstand a more “Date Night with the Husband” aesthetic.
The verdict? Heck yeah, this vest can absolutely be worn for a festive night out on the town.
I’m not someone who has a waistline; I’m very rectangular in frame, but the Duvet Wrap Puffer Vest actually has the ability to create a more feminine appearance when I tie the wrap. It’s almost shocking to feel like something so cozy and…well, poofy could actually leave me feeling far more confident wearing it.
And that shoulder line? *Dreamy sigh* … I’m just so in love.
Fit Notes: I stuck with my true size, medium, and am very happy with it. Some reviews suggest sizing down, but since I’m very broad shouldered, I felt my true size emphasized the vest best.
Gap’s Recycled Lightweight Puff Vest Is The Perfect Throw-And-Go Layer
All I’ve gotta say is, this one is selling fast.

And it’s no wonder, as Gap’s Recycled Lightweight Puff Vest is made from 100% recycled nylon and incredibly easy to throw on and go.
I love the sporty nature of this vest. It feels like an easy choice when accompanying my husband to check out the morning surf, and would be especially wonderful over a workout ‘fit when you need some extra warmth.

I actually hemmed and hawed when choosing a color for the Recycled Lightweight Puff Vest — the pink and green are beyond fun. Because the vest is very classic and straightforward in style, it would almost be more exciting to rock this one in a cheery color for the winter.
I might love this piece best when worn open, layering it on top of an extra-cozy sweater (do not skip Gap’s CashSoft line, I mean it) for an easy way to stay warm yet show off the outfit underneath.

Size Notes: I’m wearing my true size, medium, and it was actually slightly bigger than I was expecting! But I loved it and definitely wouldn’t size down, personally.
