The puffer jacket really seems to be having a moment on my social media channels. From Southern California to Europe and the good ol’ classic snowy states way up north (represent!) I can’t help but notice that people in all climates are rocking one.
It sparked a bit of inspiration, as someone who often overlooks a puffer jacket as just being practical (and quite marshmallow-y), I began finding new life in purposefully styling mine with different outfits — and embracing all that poofiness.
I even took note from the Southerners who seem to be throwing one on with their shorts and tees – now that is whimsical to this Michigan gal. But just whimsy enough for me to totally embrace the jacket both now, and when that slushy chaotic spring weather eventually finds me.
8 Ways To Wear This Cute, Affordable Puffer Jacket In Winter & Spring
There’s a ton of puffer jackets out there, and being a Michigan gal, I certainly own my fair share, but there’s something really rad about this puffer coat from Amazon. Not only does it come in six of the most gorgeous neutral, earthy shades…it’s under $100.
4 Ways I’m Wearing The Puffer Jacket in Winter
The extra long wrist cuffs are my favorite because they’re so dang practical for gloves, tucking into bags and pockets, etc. The collar pops up high to block the wind on the back of your neck, and it has a really fun, on-trend shape that can easily be cinched at the waist to showcase your curves (or in my case, just my nifty high-rise jeans).
1 | A Turtleneck, Jeans, Beanie & Crossbody Bag
jacket | jeans | sweater | boots | bag | beanie
Since the winter weather rages on where I am, layering cashmere sweaters under my jackets is still a steady go-to. I don’t let the length of a jacket restrict me from wearing longer sweaters, I just make sure to have stretchy enough jeans to tuck them into!
Also, if you haven’t heard, UGGs are cool again (thank goodness, because nothing keeps my foot warm like an UGG). They now make the “ultra minis” I’m wearing here, or a slightly taller “mini” that I’m loooving. The only downside to their recent resurgence of coolness? Colors sell out…often.
2 | Vegan Leather Pants, Nike Fleece Sweatshirt & Chunky Boots
jacket | pants | sweatshirt | boots
The easiest outfit to throw together that is not only comfortable, but looks Pinterest streetwear ready. These vegan leather pants were sold out for the longest time but just recently restocked! They are lined with a super-soft material on the inside and are so much warmer than denim for winter outfits (I suggest sizing up one). The way they pair with my fave Nike sweatshirt is almost too good to be true.
3 | Relaxed Trousers, a Sweatshirt & UGG Ultra Minis
jacket | sweatshirt | trousers (similar) | boots
I’m in the biggest trouser kick. I am constantly scouring the internet for long enough pairs for my 5’9″ self. This is an old pair I’ve held onto that is no longer in stock, but I’m eyeing up this Free People pleated pair that has a similar vibe. Pairing a long, loose trouser with casual tees and shoes is a super-fun way to feel put together, yet still incredibly comfortable, and if they’re high-rise, they look great with this puffer jacket.
4 | Layered With Another Coat
jacket | pullover puffer | jeans | boots
For the super frigid days? Well, just wear coats on top of coats. You might giggle, but I’ve done this more times than I can count, thanks to the last two months of negative temperatures. The packable puffer from Free People makes my layering trick super easy to do because it’s lightweight and thin in structure, yet still packs a punch for warmth. It also comes in a zip up, but the pullover I’m wearing here makes it a little less obvious that I’m stacking coats.
4 Puffer Jacket Looks I’m Excited To Try This Spring
If folx can rock a puffer jacket in SoCal, I can rock one in Michigan spring, right? Here are four looks I’m eager to try as temps rise.
1 | Bike Shorts, Cropped Tee & Sneakers
jacket | shorts | tee | sneakers
This is it, friends: the look I keep seeing so much on socials in Southern California, Texas… anywhere warm. It made me giggle at first, to see a winter coat with shorts, but then I tried it on myself just for kicks. It’s not so different than throwing on a fave oversized hoodie with your workout apparel, and I ended up liking the juxtaposition. With our chaotic Michigan springtime weather, I can see this look actually being very practical.
2 | Leggings, Longline Bra, Sneakers & Beanie
jacket | top | legging | sneaker | socks | beanie
An instant favorite pairing, I love the way this puffer jacket looks with a longline sports bra. Minus the jacket, this is an outfit I often throw on in the mornings during shoulder seasons, adding a beanie when the air is still crisp. Instead of a zip-up sweatshirt that can sometimes just make the outfit end up looking frumpy, grabbing this jacket for errands provides warmth and adds to the look.
3 | Joggers & Longline Bra
jacket | top | joggers | sneaker (similar)
A puffer jacket is fantastic for high-rise joggers. It’s the ultimate run-around outfit, whether to the park for some fresh air or to the grocery store for more oat milk (my kid can’t get enough).
4 | Jeans, White Tee, & High Tops
It’s classic, it’s easy, it never fails. The plain white tee + converse sneakers will never go out of style in my opinion (don’t sleep on this tee if you’re in the market for a favorite basic). But in the springtime up north you often need another layer, and I love the idea of reaching for this puffer to keep me warm while I wait on the sun!

Amy
Let’s be friends on Instagram! Sharing life from my sleepy little beach town, daily style, makeup favorites, Gilmore Girl bing-athons, and endless cups of coffee – all with a good dose of adorable toddler content, too.
Love it! Did I miss what size you are wearing? And it says chocolate but reads burgundy on my screen. Can you clarify because I typically order black. Thank you!
AH! Good question, can’t believe I forgot to include that — I’m wearing a medium, it’s just slightly oversized. For color, I remember my first impression after opening the package was “oh, it’s a bit burgundy” rather than a deeper brown. In my closet/next to all my clothes I consider it a shade of brown for sure, but it pulls more in the direction of cinnamon/pecan shades! Hope that helps 🙂
Love all of these looks but I love your make up too! Can you share what products you used? Thanks!!
Oh my gosh, thank you!! YES, I actually have all my current go-to’s rounded up right here, and I’m usually always gabbing about makeup on my Instagram stories (here’s a quick reel I made recently with my 10 minute look which is what I’m rocking here). Xx
