But, seriously, we need to talk about sweater vests. I added this BA&SH sweater vest (also on sale here, as well as a few sizes marked down at Nordstrom) to my wardrobe recently, and it’s been this surprising little workhorse (see how I styled it in my winter travel capsule wardrobe).

Sweater Vests Are (Surprisingly) My New Winter Outfit Essentials

It’s cute enough to go out at night with faux-leather jeans, yet layers beautifully over tees, turtlenecks and button-down shirts…while fitting nicely even under the most tailored of jackets.

Best of all? I don’t get nearly as overheated when wearing my beloved turtlenecks…which seems to reduce the number of hot flashes I get. This is obviously anecdotal (read: not scientific), but whatever, I’ll take it.

Winter Outfit Idea: Sweater Vest + Flare Jeans + Cropped Puffer Jackets

While I’ve been fully embracing the looser, full-length jeans of late…once the snow falls, I need my cropped denim. And I love how this sweater vest gives cropped jeans and chunky boots a slight nerdy vibe. The combo feels just off enough to read v. nonchalant.

Also, if one of your New Year’s resolutions is to invest in better basics…this rag & bone cotton tee is my favorite of all time. The fit is like my old James Perse tees, but less sheer and with a better sleeve.

And I can easily tweak this base outfit to account for colder or warmer weather. While I’m always going to sport thick wool socks under my chunky boots, I’ll go for really long ones in the cold (or heck — even fleece-lined tights) and keep them my usual length on milder days.

Before I forget: I’ve gotten a few questions about my hair. These messy waves are courtesy of this Deep Wave hair crimper (and, yes, I just flinched typing the word “crimper”). I’d been wearing a hat right before these photos, but you can see the waves better in this article.

Lastly, if anyone is looking for an impossibly light, cropped puffer…this hooded North Face jacket is great. Feels like I’m wearing nothing but is surprisingly warm.
