When You’re Not Ready For “Real Shoes”…Lined Birkenstocks.

Disappointment is inevitable when I’m forced each autumn to retire my most-worn summer Birkenstock slide sandals to the back of my closet and transfer over to “real shoes.” I’m never quite ready for tying laces or putting on socks…or bending over to do zipping or buckling or strap tightening of any kind. Slip-on sandals are just so easy. And my brain is always quite pleased with easy — slipping on comfortable sandals, without thinking, as part of my everyday routine as I walk out the door.

Last fall, I handled this inevitable disappointment by transferring immediately from my beloved tan Birkenstock sandals to these easy, cozy, shearing-lined Birkenstock mules.

These shearling-lined Birkenstock mules are cozy, easy, & met all my comfort-shoe requirements. The transition, however, from summer sandals to fall lined mules was a little too abrupt for me.

I wore the Birkenstock Buckley mules happily on MAJOR repeat last fall. So cozy, so easy, and they met all my comfort-shoe requirements. The transition, however, from sandals to lined mules was a little too abrupt for me.

My Comfy Slip-On Sandal Solution For Fall: Shearling-Lined Birkenstocks

This year, I decided I wanted to figure out a way to wear slip-on SANDALS for a bit longer into the fall season. I’m just not ready to part ways with my fave footwear quite yet…and Birkenstocks with socks (while many people rock the heck out of this look) isn’t really my personal style.

Lined Birkenstock sandals quickly became my solution.

Birkenstock Arizona Big Buckle Genuine Shearling Lined Sandals have a furry, soft lining that feels oh-so-good on my feet on slightly crisp fall mornings.

They check all the boxes: comfort and support (Birkenstock’s specialty), slip-on/slip-off ease as you’re running out the door… Plus, ample opportunity for my toes to breathe (and of course to show off my new, pretty fall pedicure), BUT with a fabulously furry, soft lining that feels oh-so-good on my feet on slightly crisp fall mornings.

Slip-On Sandals For Fall: A Review Of Shearling-Lined Birkenstocks

The newest Big Buckle styles and colorways from Birkenstock also have the spot-on look and vibe of everything fall. In this video review, I take a look at the pros and cons of both new Big Buckle lined sandals (the Madrids and Arizonas), give you my thoughts on the new color options, as well as discuss a few other lined Birkenstocks I have in my closet.

This year, I need a way to wear slip-on *sandals* this fall. I'm not ready to part ways w/ my fave shoes, & shearling-lined Birkenstocks are the next best thing.

  1. The lined sandals make no sense to me. If your feet are cold, don’t you want the tops covered? I prefer to go from my Birk Granada sandals to my unlined Bostons, to my lined Bostons. (And from there on to UGGS, lined Docs and lined high tops–can you tell my feet get cold?)

BTW, waiting on a few pairs of Naturalizers to try on for an upcoming wedding. Fingers crossed!

    • I ADORE that you shared your seasonal shoe progression…Fantastic!!! And yes…I agree…you have a perfect line-up for feet that get cold. I totally see why you don’t get lined sandals! I have the opposite problem as you! I easily get overheated (especially my feet). I love the coziness of the shearling-lined mules, but it has to get pretty cold before I can wear them. I tried to wear them this morning (our first cool morning in Philly) and my feet were on fire and I was a hot sweaty mess by the time I got to school drop off. And this is where the lined sandals come in to play….when my brain wants coziness and the temperatures and season are both telling me to wear coziness, but my feet desperately need air for temperature regulation. A ridiculously specific “need”, I recognize…but making my feet happy takes up quite a bit of my brain space…and from the sound of your shoe rotation (Birks, Ugg,s Docs, and Sneaks)..it sounds like it’s a focus for you too. Love it!

And yay for Naturalizers for weddings! I’m so disappointed they are no longer offering the Kinsley. It’s my favorite for sure and none of their current styles compare. Hoping they will bring it back one of these days. Hope one of the ones you ordered works! Thanks for writing in, Renee.

    • These have been SO popular! I will definitely keep your search in mind as I’m doing my daily perusing of all the sites. In the past, Nordstrom has had restocks in popular Birkenstock styles, so we could keep our fingers crossed for that….but for now I would suggest contacting Birkenstock customer service directly or other major retailers. Sometimes they have an odd pair or two that they don’t put as part of their online stock. This has worked for me a couple of times when I’m searching for something that appears sold out.

  2. Yes, my feet have gotten progressively more picky as I’ve had kids (serious plantar fascitis during pregnancy) and gotten older. Even 3″ heels are too high and will start sending tingles through my toes. Also, I wear a size 11, so there’s that.

Am waiting on a pair of Naturalizer Ivy’s to show up. The other front runner is the Vionic Jacynda. A pump with arch support – who knew?
