Key Piece For Winter: Stylish Little Puffer

If there’s one piece I had to point to that makes me feel a little more pulled together in the winter, it’s some sort of cute little puffer jacket, but with some serious style cred. This jacket is not necessarily a technical jacket (although it could be), but something undeniably cool, something that makes my outfits look more intentional. This is the kind of jacket I can even throw on over joggers and voila! It’s a look.

Since puffers already have a leg up on warmth (just because they’re, uh, puffer jackets), I like finding one that also brings the fun. Not only can a piece like this go from dog walking to date night, but heck – it makes me happy. This is the kind of useful piece that really can be worn with all sorts of different outfits, in vastly different scenarios. (Fun fact: the sleeves zip off, too, so it can be worn as a vest this spring.)

Stylish Little Puffers (From Saks)

For this type of jacket, I love peeking at Saks. Not only does Saks have style cred in spades, but I can sometimes find a little something on sale – especially in January. Here are all of the puffers I could easily find myself wearing day or night (some of which are on sale). While most of these, like mine, are fashion puffers, some of them are legit ski jackets.

The Two Most-Worn Outfits With My A.L.C. Puffer

I’m a creature of habit, gang. So when I say “most worn” think daily. (Obviously I’m talking about the jogger outfit.) But the date night outfit is no slouch either – it features a pair of seriously sexy jeans that I’m happy to wear even in this time of baggy & barrel jeans.

Let’s get into it.

1. What I Wear To Walk The Dog: Puffer + Joggers + Winter Boots

This A.L.C. puffer is, in fact, warm enough to do a little dog walking. While it’s hardly the warmest jacket I own, I’m forever throwing it on over a sweatsuit. And then, if it’s really cold, I’ll put skiing base layers under the sweatsuit.

This sweatsuit by Stellae Dux is great for getting out of the house. It’s actually sweater material, so it looks almost fancy. The ‘almost fancy’ vibe is enhanced by the little gold tie details, and perfectly swingy cut of the top. It was too cold to model just the sweatsuit, but I’ll throw something up on IG soon.

The sweater knit is more soft & stretchy than woolly (it’s only 2% cashmere – the rest is a viscose/poly blend), so it almost feels like performance fabric. I really like it – it’s held up really well for running around after the dog & kids.

Lastly, if you’ve been looking for boots, Inuikii boots are great. They’re fluffy on the inside (like UGGS), but have a more sneaker-like bottom and feel. They’re seriously cool on (a dupe of Isabel Marant), and much more practical than I was expecting. They’re also available as a wedge, if you’d like some additional height. I do think they run a tiny bit small, tho, so size up.

2. My Date Night Uniform: Puffer + Something Cropped (or Tucked) + Wide-Leg Jeans

The reason I like thinking about my outfit in terms of puffer + jeans is that – to some extent – the top & shoes don’t matter. As long as the top is short enough to fit under the puffer (or tucked in), the outfit will work. And because the wide-leg of these jeans are so nice and wide, the shoes don’t matter, either. Which means I can wear fancy shoes if I’m back in Philly on actual sidewalks….or winter-ready wedge boots with some sort of tread in snowy Vermont. The pant covers all.

And ‘the pant’ in this case, is Mother Denim Hustlers in wash ‘karaoke in Kyoto’. They’re great. I appreciate a dark wash that’s not just uniformly dark – these have some very subtle variations that make them interesting – and they’re soft, stretchy, and hold up nicely. Also? They give good bum.

We need one more peek at this jacket, tho. It’s a splurge, but I can’t get over how often I’m wearing it. While it certainly looks cute open, I especially love it snapped all the way up. The vibe is almost ’60s mod, which feels unexpected and fresh on a puffer. Also!! As I mentioned before, the sleeves zip off, converting this piece into a vest.

And if any of you noticed my missing mitten in one of the above photos…yup: Bad Gal Nini was at it again.
