OK Gang, here’s the deal: last year, right around the holidays, I picked up a pair of tall boots in blue snakeskin. They were colorful; they were dramatic; I literally swooned when I saw them. They ended up being the most perfect way (read: comfortable, warm, practical) to make my outfits *holiday!!*. I wore them under big tulle skirts, I wore them with midi skirts, I wore them with sweaters and jeans.

In fact….I loved them with sweaters and jeans. They made that typical combo feel fresh. And anything that can make my usual jeans-and-a-sweater work overtime…I’m in.

The only problem? By the time I discovered how versatile these tall, colorful, snakeskin boots actually were….they were long sold out. (In fact…they were practically sold out before I even opened the box.)

These boots were SO good (and flew off the shelves so quickly)…that I had a sneaking suspicion that these boots were going to be The Next Big Thing…and it looks like I might be right. Nordstrom, home of All the Things I Love To Wear, has a seriously good selection of tall statement boots, including…the exact pair I bought last year. My Sam Edelman Hai Boots have been updated with new colors (think emerald green) but they’re gorgeous. And there’s more!! I found four pairs of the sexiest, most playful tall boots a girl could ask for. Like these.

A go-to party outfit (dare we say uniform) is always good to have on hand — especially for fall & holiday season. Tall animal print boots, jeans, sweater...GO!

Why so colorful? Not usually my jam, right? RIGHT. But I’ve been trying on a ton of tall snakeskin (and leopard!) boots, and the ones that look the most “real” also look Very Serious. The vibe is more I Am A Fancy, Sophisticated Person and that is just not me. Instead, the colorful snakeskin pair (or abstract leopard print) are just as dramatic, but have a playful element that makes them much easier to wear. (I’ve found that this only seems to apply to tall or OTK boots, not ankle booties.)

Tall Animal Print Boots + Jeans = THE Go-To Party Outfit Formula

So. Keep reading to see my four favorite pairs of tall statement boots, as well as a small shopping guide at the bottom with my favorite sweaters, jeans and cute little bags. Basically everything you need for a warm (and cute!!) party outfit.

Outfit 1 – Sam Edelman Hai Snakeskin Boots in Mint

A go-to party outfit (dare we say uniform) is always good to have on hand — especially for fall & holiday season. Tall animal print boots, jeans, sweater...GO!

This is the exact pair of snakeskin boots I bought last year, updated in gorgeous emerald, forest and mint greens. For some reason, this boot photographs a little more gray (even on Nordstrom), but it’s really the most beautiful (and subtle) shades of green. The heel is extremely walkable (even on the icy streets of Michigan), and the boots overall are really comfortable.

My only caveat is that the boot shaft comes up pretty high. It hits my 5’3″ self right behind the knee (so I can feel it a bit when I sit down). If you are petite…keep reading. I have another recommendation.

sweater: Reformation Isabel Ribbed Cashmere Sweater (xs) **SUSTAINABLE PICK** – this is the sexiest sweater I’ve EVER worn. I couldn’t quite keep it on my shoulders, though.  But it’s a stunner for the holidays. (Also in black.)

jeans: DL1961 Instasculpt Farrow Cropped Skinny Jeans  **SUSTAINABLE PICK** Not only are these jeans unapologetically high, but the waistband is more flattering than most. Which means nothing squeezes out over the top (bring on the tucked-in tops and shorter sweaters!). These jeans are also insanely soft. My new favorites.

boots: Sam Edelman Hai Boots in Mint – these come in a ton of other colors (black, white, taupe), as well as a “real” looking snake, and some genius hybrid of chestnut with a brownish snake running in panels throughout the shaft. Seriously comfortable, walkable heel height. Tall shaft.

bag: Topshop Mini Bag – the cutest. And I love how well this lighter-color pairs with the colorful snakeskin.

Outfit 2 – Steve Madden Kinga Tall Boots (in Blue Snake)

These Steve Madden boots are surprisingly walkable, given the stiletto heel. They’re wider at the calf, but several inches shorter…making them perfect for petites.

boots: Steve Madden Kinga Tall Boots in Blue Snake – Decently comfortable stiletto heel, wider and shorter calf. Comes in a bunch of colors. My favs are either the blue snake I’m wearing….or the blush pink snake. Try pairing the blush pink with a burgundy sweater (SWOON).

bag: Topshop Mini Bag – the cutest. And I loved how well this lighter color paired with the colorful snakeskin.

Outfit 3 – Sam Edelman Colorful Snakeskin Tall Boots

The Sam Edelman Raakel boots below are my favorites in terms of playful colors. The shaft is the same as the emerald Sam Edelmans (featured above), but the heel is higher. Still comfortable, but not *quite* as walkable (I’m a pretty big baby about high heels).

sweaterReformation Elle Sweater (xs) **SUSTAINABLE PICK** – My new favorite sweater. It’s the prettiest shade of camel (love the variations of thread), and also comes in gray. Annoyingly I can’t decide between the two…

jeans: Reformation May High and Skinny Jeans **SUSTAINABLE PICK** – Super-high, super-soft, super-comfy. Also in a perfectly washed black. (No front pockets, though, if you care about that.)

boots: Sam Edelman Raakel Boots – also in bright red or black, but I’m wildly obsessed with the colors on this pair. The kind of pattern that will look good with black, brown, dark jeans, light jeans, everything. The heel is a little higher than the Sam Edelman Hai boots, but the shaft is the same.

bag: Topshop Mini Bag – the cutest. And I love how well this lighter color pairs with the colorful snakeskin.

Outfit 4 – Louise et Cie Abstract Leopard Tall Boots

I’m all about the details in these seriously cool boots. First off, the leopard print is unique — almost like art. I love the perfectly round heel (covered in fabric) — super-walkable, btw — and the gold zippers up the side. The shaft isn’t overly long, and these boots are wider to fit a bigger calf.

sweater: Vince Shrunken Mock Neck Sweater (xs) – This sweater feels like wearing a cozy turtleneck…but the fit is decidedly sexier. This is going to become my go-to for freezing winter nights (like my birthday — ALWAYS freezing).

jeans: DL1961 Instasculpt Farrow Cropped Skinny Jeans  **SUSTAINABLE PICK** – the waistband is really flattering. Not only are these jeans unapologetically high, but the waistband is more flattering than most. Which means that tucking in tops…or wearing a shorter sweater can be done without fear of something squeezing out over top. Also these jeans are insanely soft. My new favorite pair.

boots: Louise Et Cia Leopard Print Boots – walkable, different and dramatic. So freaking fun to wear. Wider calf, hits not too high on the leg.

bag: Topshop Top Handle Straw Bag – I love straw bags…and am convinced that black straw can be carried until the snow flies.

I am NOT an ‘it bag’ kind of girl. Like…at all. Gucci bags hold no appeal. I am, however, a quirky-little-retro-could-be-vintage-with-a-twist kind of handbag girl. Topshop kills it in this category. But like the darn boots…I suspect these things won’t stay in stock for long. (By the time the holidays rolled around last year, all of the good Topshop bags were gone.)

Now I promise not to mention the holidays again…for at least a couple of weeks.  #promisespromises

A huge thank you to Nordstrom and ShopStyle for sponsoring this post! As always, all thoughts, opinions, and product choices (and claims about The Next Big Thing — haha) are my own. And readers, thank you for your continued support. It doesn’t go unnoticed, and is so very much appreciated!

  1. the Louise et cie boots you have on, and the ones linked are completely different. the ones linked do not have the fabric covered heel. do you have a correct link?

    • That’s definitely the link I used to order the boots. It looks like the product picture isn’t accurate, which happens sometimes. (I think it’s due to design changes between initial and final product…or sometimes things just come from the factory different than expected.)

  2. Question (but not about this post!): I loved the Mom Edit Voloshin line and purchased two pieces over the summer. Voloshin has come out with their new fall line–I adore the fabrics and some of the pieces are beautiful, but most of them seem to big and unflattering for my shorter 5′ 4″ frame. I’m wondering if you will be teaming up with Voloshin again, as I feel like the line you created with them for the summer collection worked so well on shorter people.
