Swimsuits For Moms 2026: I Ordered 10 For Spring Break (Most Were Terrible)

8

I am…looking for a cute swimsuit. Really, this should not be as hard as it is – I don’t feel the age I am, nor do I (think?) I quite look it (at least not some mornings, haha) – and yet.

Here we are.

I am a 50 year old woman, in decent shape, who has never really worried about swimsuits. Honestly, most of the time I just wear a string bikini and call it a day (I credit the grandmothers on the beaches in Spain for my longtime love of string bikinis). And once Summer is in full swing and I’m sporting some sort of a tan (real or fake), a string bikini is likely still my move. But there’s a looooong road between February and peak Summer, and I’m finding that I don’t always want to rock a string bikini.

So this is the start of my 2026 one-piece swimsuit search. I’m trying swimsuits from a wide range of brands – not the traditionally “mature” swimwear brands – to see what actually works for women like me, women over 40 (or 50, haha I keep forgetting ) who want something comfortable, flattering and cute, supportive but not suffocating, and made from a good fabric with a cool, non-matronly design.

Bottom line? Here’s what I’m personally looking for:

  • A one-piece swimsuit that stays in place but is easy to get on/off
  • Light tummy smoothing (but not a corset)
  • Straps that don’t dig in and create back rolls
  • Soft, comfortable fabric that’s thick enough that you can’t see my belly button
  • Bum coverage that feels secure (not so cheeky it turns into a thong while walking) yet is ever-so-slightly cheeky..ish?

I don’t need to be completely covered up (give me a sexy back, for goodness’ sake, or some strategic cutouts), but I also don’t want to feel squeezed, compressed, or accidentally exposed. And since I’m a breast cancer survivor with reconstruction, I’m probably not the best person to evaluate bust support, but I’ll give you my honest take anyway.

As new styles drop this spring, I’ll keep updating this post with what’s worth trying (and what’s absolutely not).

The One Swimsuit I’d Consider Buying (So Far)

Sunshine 79 Wild Vines plunge one-piece swimsuit review

Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Bloomingdale’s

The only swimsuit I’ve tried on that I truly love is this plunging number from Sunshine 79. It’s comfortable, stays in place even when I wiggle around, and has a really cute back. It’s great on a softer tummy and I felt really good in this one. The fit is TTS – I’m wearing my usual size 6.

Swimsuits For Moms 2026: What I’ve Tried So Far (The Good, The Blah & The Awful)

For this article, I’m looking at swimsuits from all brands (not just traditionally ‘mature brands’). So far, I’ve tried on swimsuits from J.Crew, Hunza G, Seafolly, Milly, Agua Bendita, Gottex, Solid & Striped, Becca and Sunshine 79. I’m only trying on swimsuits whose patterns and/or styles I truly love.

1. Agua Bendita One-Piece Swimsuit Review

Agua Bendita swimsuits are made in Colombia, and are of incredible quality. The fabric is really special – I’ve been wearing this brand for years, and the fabric is the softest, most comfortable swimsuit fabric I’ve ever found. Their pieces are all really special, with a high attention to detail. I had really high hopes for these.

I love the unexpected print – it’s wildly pretty and really romantic. I’m wearing a size small in this suit (I sized down one size), and it was really comfortable to wear and easy enough to put on. My only issue is that the bottom’s top hem slides down my stomach after a while, exposing my softer belly in an unattractive way. But honestly? In the size small, I had to really move around to make it slide down. When I tried the medium (my usual size), it slid down much faster. So sizing down is key, especially with a softer stomach.

I’m wearing my usual size medium, but it’s much too small – I felt like I was squeezing out everywhere. The side cut-outs are pretty and the fabric is Agua Bendita’s usual super-soft-and-smooth fabric, but I didn’t love how this one fit.

2. Becca Fiji Plunge Neck One-Piece Swimsuit Review

Everyone loves Becca suits, and for good reason: they’re great. I adore the sexy back, and this swimsuit is both really comfortable and really easy to get on/off. I’m wearing my usual size medium here and it’s….allllmost too big. I also don’t love the metal buckle (although I could get over that pretty easily). If you tend to like glam details like this, Scotti tried on a wider range of Becca swimsuits, if interested. Bottom line? This particular one is a really fun, playful, and comfortable suit.

3. Free-est Kerry One-Piece Swimsuit Review

BROWN SUIT: Size small, WHITE SUIT: size medium

This suit is great. I tried it last Spring, but the color I liked best (brown) was sold out in my usual size medium, and the size small was just too tight and small overall. I couldn’t keep the top up when walking around. The white (size medium) is lovely, but I was a little concerned about my ability to keep it white.

The only thing that gave me pause is that this suit is a pretty thick, substantial suit. One one hand, it makes it realllllllly flattering on the stomach – smooths over all lumps and bumps – but on the other hand, I was worried I’d get too hot in the heat of summer. For a spring break suit, however, it’s pretty great. Happily, the brown is now back in stock.

4. Gottex Flirtt Vacation Mode Adjustable One Piece Swimsuit Review

Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Bloomingdale’s

Ugh, this color is BAD. I don’t know what I was thinking, especially since this exact style comes in other colors!! In any case, I really like the extra-high cut legs (although I keep cracking up because mine look so pasty and white in this photo) and I like the not-high but not-low back. It looks cool. The straps are connected to the leg opening, so if you want tighter straps, you’re also going to get higher-cut legs. It worked surprisingly well, although I was a little worried the straps wouldn’t stay up (they stayed put better than expected).

However, Gottex added boob cups in this swimsuit that are giving me weird shading. I have to think they’d soften up with use, though. And lastly, I don’t love how tight this fabric is across my stomach. I’d probably be much happier in this suit if it was a darker color.

5. Hunza G Pamela One-Piece Swimsuit Review

Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Shopbop

I hadn’t tried any of Hunza G’s one-size-fits-all, crinkle-fabric swimsuits for a few years, and I had high hopes. But this one is a nope. While I do like the top (and it does stay put better than similar suits), there was both too much fabric around my middle, and it was too tight on the leg opening, which created a lumpy effect (which you can see on my hips if you look closely). This suit didn’t make me feel my best.

6. J.Crew One-Piece Swimsuit Review

I’ve been wearing J.Crew swimsuits every year since high school, so I obviously had very high hopes. Now…it’s just February, and I know J.Crew will likely be dropping more suits, but the last drop is…not my favorite. (Oh look – J.Crew did just drop this new one – love it.)

J.Crew Sydney Scrunchie One-Piece Swimsuit

jcrew scrunchie swimsuit review

Where To Buy: J.Crew

This is the best of the J.Crew swimsuits I tried this round. The scrunchie fabric is great, the color is gorgeous, and I love that the straps are adjustable. That said, the sizing is frustrating. The size 4 was too tight and uncomfortable, but the size 6 (that I’m wearing above) wouldn’t stay put and ended up sliding down and exposing some nipple. Sigh.

J.Crew Sydney One-Piece Swimsuit

This is the exact same suit, but in regular swimwear fabric, not the textured scrunchie fabric. This suit runs a full size smaller than it’s scrunchie version, so the size 6 was too tight and uncomfortable.

J.Crew Sparkle Rib Square-Neck One-Piece Swimsuit

Again, I do like the scrunchie fabric, but the style of this swimsuit wouldn’t stay in place, and nip slips were alllll too common. I also don’t like how the light fabric clings to my bum all weird. Skip.

J.Crew Claudia Scrunchie One-Piece Swimsuit Review

Same scrunchie fabric (in an ill-advised color for my skintone) but the big issue here is that I couldn’t keep the straps on my shoulders. Like…AT ALL.

7. Milly Textured Ruched Swimsuit Review

Where To Buy: Nordstrom

I liked this one!! But only in the navy. The light blue looks a bit weird, I think, but I included it because it shows the ruching well in photos. The ruching is really flattering, and this suit is pretty deliciously textured and comfortable – it’s a really well-made swimsuit.

I was deeply suspicious that the strapless neckline would stay put (the suit is truly strapless – it doesn’t even come with a convertible strap), but despite my best efforts (wiggling around and dancing, haha) I couldn’t make it slip. It’s a good one.

8. Seafolly Lettuce Edge One-Piece Swimsuit Review

seafolly one piece swimsuit review

Where To Buy: Nordstrom

My sister has sworn by Seafolly swimsuits for years, but this one was too tight on me (especially the back – gahhhh). I’m wearing my usual size 6, but the pattern is so pretty and the back so sexy it might be worth trying another size. That said…I think I’d need to size up two sizes. This suit is probably best for someone who doesn’t carry all their weight in their midsection.

9. Solid & Striped Alma Seersucker One-Piece Swim

solid & striped one piece swimsuit review

Where To Buy: Solid & Striped

I bought this cute suit last year, and it’s great. It’s definitely a “mom suit” but there’s something about this one that feels more French-girl than mumsy. That said, the underwire foam cups seem to run a bit small. I’m wearing my usual size medium.

10. Sunshine 79 Wild Vines Plunge Swimsuit Review

Where To Buy: Nordstrom | Bloomingdale’s

This was my top pick. I love the plunge neckline that somehow stayed in place no matter how much I wiggled and danced around. The back is just sexy enough (cheeky-ish without being terrifying) and the white-with-floral just feels playful and fun. I’m wearing my usual size 6, and it’s really comfortable. Fit is definitely TTS.

So that’s where I am in my search for the best one-piece swimsuits for women over 50 (or 40 or whatever). Which brands do you guys want to see next? I’m eyeing up Boden and Farm Rio…and will likely keep trying J.Crew when new suits drop (SIGH). If you’ve found a good one, please share with the class.

Solidarity, sisters.

  1. I just wanted to say how brave you are and how much you must love us all to put swim suits on in Feb. My personal favorite brand is RIOT it is a black owned brand that you featured in 2020and their suit fit amazing on my 43 year old body.

  2. Shana! You look so pretty in the light blue (esp the shade of the strapless one). My favorite one on you is actually the one you didn’t like under #1 (AGUA BENDITA MARIEL SEREIA REVERSIBLE ONE-PIECE SWIMSUIT). The print compliments your hair and skin tone so nicely!!! I really think you look great in the lighter colors for swimsuits.

    • Thank you!!! It’s funny, but I’ve been loving the lighter ones, too (I just need some sort of pattern on them otherwise I feel too exposed, haha). But thanks for the love!
