The 4 Best J.Crew Coatigans, Sweater-Blazers, & Cardigans

2

It’s fall coatigan time everyone! Who’s with me for this VERY specific celebration???

I may have been quoted in a Mom Edit meeting declaring, “Nothing qualifies as a true fall outfit unless there’s a coatigan involved. Period.” Well…at least in my fashion rule book.

I truly look forward to wearing this comfortable top layer each and every fall, and J.Crew for the past 4 years has had the very best selection of coatigans, cardigans, and sweater-blazers. So…. once again I find myself happily doing a big J.Crew Coatigan try-on.

Below are my top picks from this year’s J.Crew coatigan research…but keep scrolling for all the nitty gritty details, including my thoughts on this “bonus J.Crew-esque coatigan at Nordstrom and selfies of how I wear J.Crew coatigans on the daily.

Coatigans: My Fave Top Layer For Fall + Early Winter

Coatigans, cardigans, cardigan-jackets, sweater-jackets, sweater-blazers, cardigan-coats… this garment has WAY too many names for sure. It doesn’t really matter, though, what this piece is officially called.

To me…the definition (and requirement) of a “coatigan” is a soft and comfy top layer (made of some type of sweater/knit material) that you can throw on over anything as you’re walking out the door on a cool fall or early winter day. Heavy enough to give some warmth, substantial enough to layer over other sweaters, but light enough to wear indoors at times (or in the car) as well.

A Deep Dive Into The Best J.Crew Cardigans, Sweater-Blazers & Coatigans

J.Crew has been my go-to for coatigans for years. They always offer a great selection of cardigans and sweater-blazers that are easy-to-wear, at a good price point, and made from fabrics/knits that are medium weight and super comfy.

Although I was disappointed to see that my most-worn style at J.Crew was discontinued this year…what the heck, J.Crew?…I did find some great alternatives. Hoping it’s helpful to see each coatigan worn over three very basic outfit formulas: 1. jeans & stripes 2. all black 3. leggings & a hoodie.

1. J.Crew Long Ribbed Cardigan

This cardigan-sweater (coatigan) is the coziest of the bunch. It has a similar style to previous coatigans at J.Crew I’ve loved, but this year’s version has a thicker ribbed texture that gives it extra warm and comfy-cozy vibes. The cute oversized patch pockets with button detailing adds a little more oomph to this year’s style as well.

This is exactly the type of coatigan I find myself reaching for in the mornings on the way to school drop off…casual and cozy and easy. Definitely the type that gets worn on repeat in my wardrobe. Note…this cardigan comes in another color called “aged parchment” which looked soooooo incredibly bad on me. But…if you can wear pale-yellowish tones, check it out.

2. J.Crew Juliette Sweater-Blazer

It’s back…this is a classic J.Crew style that has been around since I started doing my big J.Crew coatigan try-ons. An oldie, but goodie, for sure and an absolute crowd fav. The weight and feel of this sweater-blazer is amazing…it’s a solid “medium” weight in a solid “medium warmth” super soft-to-the-touch smooth knit.

This coatigan definitely provides some warmth on those cool days, but it’s light enough weight that I’ll sometimes keep it on inside as well. It looks good over everything and feels like the most versatile of the group. With its simple design and clean lines, it effortlessly looks at home over casual or dressy-ish looks. Comes in 5 different colors!

…in khaki as well

3. J.Crew Relaxed Milano-Stitch Cardigan

Okay…before you go any further, check out this cardigan on the model…so freaking cool! I’m showing this cardigan how I would wear it on the daily, but I feel like there is HUGE potential with this one style wise. It has just bit of a swingy shape going on, and the sleeves are just wide enough that combined with the statement-making buttons it definitely has a “fashion-y” vibe (without feeling fussy). I’m excited about playing around with buttoning the top buttons (like the model) for some dressier looks.

Although I definitely prefer the heather charcoal, it does come in a gorgeous “vivid burgundy” as well that would be fun for the holidays. I have a selfie of the red at the bottom of this post. Sooooo many reviews (like pretty much ALL of them) say to size down in this cardigan. I ordered the XS, and it definitely “fits”, but I like the slouchier oversized vibe of the S (my typical size) better. The XS was still oversized, but not as much movement and drape and I don’t mind a big oversized coatigan look.

4. J.Crew Warwick Sweater-Blazer

This was the biggest surprise of the bunch. The gold button peacoat thing is not typically my style, but I like this one! Definitely doesn’t hurt that it’s a comfy sweater-blazer/coatigan (and not a big heavy restrictive traditional peacoat). The Warwick definitely has a little more oomph than the classic oldie-but-goodie Juliette style, but still gives off a polished vibe.

I definitely liked this option better than the longer Giselle sweater-blazer (that had shoulder pads and not as much personality). The Warwick Sweater-Blazer also comes in black and navy.

A Few More Coatigans

…If You Like Garnett Red

Definitely some huge holiday potential with the red version of the Milano Stitch Cardigan (that I showed above in charcoal). I’m going to try it over a basic black dress with tights and the top buttoned (like the model).

…If You Want A Longer Preppy Style

This is the Long Giselle Sweater Blazer I mentioned before. I’m not a fan of the shoulder pads in this guy and it didn’t have as much personality as the shorter Warwick, but if you like the gold button look (but want something longer) this is definitely a good option. I do love this heather walnut color. 3 additional colors as well.

…That Coatigan at Nordstrom I Mentioned

Mango Coatigan Nordstrom

Okay… I have a lot of thoughts on this one. Ultimately, I’m undecided…for now. I ordered this coatigan in both colors and in multiple sizes because it has a VERY similar vibe to the J.Crew coatigan I have loved from years past ( J.Crew has discontinued). So…I thought this was going to save the day as an amazing alternative I could recommend to readers.

Mango Coatigan Nordstrom

But…it’s not quite what I thought it would be. It’s a lot of material…longer and a more substantial width and weight than the old J.Crew one. The other coatigans from J.Crew I would definitely wear indoors at times, but this felt more like an outdoor top coat and too heavy to wear indoors. But…it’s cute! And if you like this style for a coat, but don’t want the heaviness of the wool “coat” versions..this might be a great option. Scotti looks amazing in it here.

One more issue of concern, though…both of the coatigans (ivory and brown) came tightly folded and after hanging up for a while in the bathroom while I shower (my go-to steaming process), the crease hasn’t eased up….like…at.all. There’s one review that mentions this issue as well, so I’m hesitant to rip off the tags quite yet. Verdict to be determined on this one…

You know I’m a coatigan gal…forever and always… so if this is a go-to piece for you as well, feel free to share if you’ve found any other retailers with as good of selection as J.Crew.

    • Thank you! I don’t find the Milano stitch cardigan itchy. My skin isn’t super sensitive to wool (like some people) but this sweater feels pretty soft to me.
