I don’t do a lot of accessorizing, but what I lack in that area, I feel I totally make up for by wearing a plethora of styles in sunglasses (or so I tell myself). I have at least four pairs at all times, randomly dispersed in the bags I carry every day – the classic, the obnoxiously large ones, the more old-school pair and, of course, the fun and funky. Can’t forget those, being that they’re my favorite kind to wear.
I’ve been noticing all of the 2018 trends in sunglasses and well, OKAY. There are so many different styles to choose from right now. I’m loving it! That said, I knew it was about time I covered some of them on TME, especially considering summer is basically here. Where did May go? Anyone know?
Before we dive in, I have to say that while I have very expensive taste (it’s a curse that has been passed down to me) and I would love to throw money at designer sunglasses, I do not have the budget to go along with it. I’ve figured a way to get around that, though — ordering super cheap sunglasses from Amazon. Seriously. That’s how I keep up with sunglass trends, and I don’t care who knows it! In fact, I tell anyone who will listen…ha ha.
I understand that not everyone can appreciate a fine, plastic pair of $12 tinted glasses like I can, so I made sure to compare Designer vs. Dupes for both the Bougie Gal and the Cheapskate. It was a lot of fun…and now I have too many pairs of cheap sunglasses. Woo!
Oversized Square Sunglasses
Gucci, of course, has their iconic oversized square shades. They’re not exactly within my budget for sunglasses. They may be for some of you, though, so HECK YEH. I did find a similar Bold Tinted Square pair (that are even a bit more funky, which I like) on Amazon.
While they are significantly cheaper and, I assume, not as well made…they do the job. They don’t feel like they’ll fall apart in 5 sec, if that’s any help to ya.
Vintage Round Sunglasses
Are the Beatles in the house? Retro Super Future has a spot-on pair, and if you like to spend a bit more on sunglasses, these may be your jam. As for me, I went with this Classic Vintage pair and they are a dead ringer to the more pricey ones (except for maybe the lenses being slightly darker).
I will say that they may be a bit more fragile than the more expensive pair; meaning, they should be stored in a hard case. I have found cheaper wire sunglasses get a little bent out of shape if I just throw them in a bag (which I inevitably do).
Oversized Round Sunglasses
These ginormous, round shades are so fun looking. Marni’s Round Cut-out Sunglasses are amazing (no surprise there). My own are an Oversized Round Frame I found on Amazon for $13! They are pretty sturdy, by the way….and could definitely withstand an entire summer. The pink and gold are sold out now, but the leopard is still in stock.
If you prefer the pretty pink, there’s a pastel pink from Style Vault. I just can’t speak for their quality.
Jackie O. Inspired Sunglasses
Jackie O. and her chic, oversized shades. Never a bad idea, in my opinion…and that’s who these red pairs reminded me of. Sunday Somewhere has their Kurt Oval Acetate Sunglasses, which look lovely. They are also mirrored, which I think I do prefer, because it does update the style a bit to 2018. The pair I’m wearing, is an Oval Mod Shade from SojoS and they are definitely a red red. I like them as a pop of color for summer.
These are definitely more on the cheap, plastic side…and while I would totally wear them (because I only want them to last a few months, tops), some of you may not like how Forever21 they feel.
Heart Shaped Sunglasses
I can’t dislike these. They’re too happy and cute! I laughed a bit trying them on for the first time, BUT now I’m wearing them without apology. Saint Laurent’s LouLou Sunglasses are super chic and gosh, Italian crafted. I like how thin the frame appears to be, as well — subtle difference, but makes them look more expensive…which they are ;). My adorable white pair from SunglassUP comes in at $10.99 and is available in black. They are more of a cat eye, with the high tip…and I like it!
First impression trying them on? For a cheap pair, they work. Will they last forever? No. They’re $11.
p.s. I also like Chloe’s Poppy Heart-Shaped Sunglasses. They’re a bit of a “softer” heart style.
Marble/Tortoiseshell Sunglasses
Kate Spade’s Kaileen is a pair I’d actually spring for – not crazy expensive, but I know they should be well made. I did find an even more affordable pair of Jim Halo Browline Sunglasses that have a cool marbling to them. They felt good on, and, provided they are stored in a case, should stay together.
FYI: it’s a good idea to have one of those tiny screwdrivers for glasses, because I have found that wire-framed shades can sometimes loosen up…and that’s when they start to fall apart completely.
Mirrored Lens Wire Sunglasses
On the left is Dior’s Reflected Sunglasses. They’re an abstract aviator style with light blue lenses, which is really cool looking. My pair, on the right, is a Mirrored Cat Eye (blue and silver). They look fresh with a basic white tee and cut-off jean shorts.
I’ve had these before, and they do tend to need straightening out here and there; meaning, the frame can get a bit wonky and need to be fiddled with in order to sit straight on your face…ha! They’re cheap.
Small 90’s-Inspired Sunglasses
I’ve been really skeptical of this trend, but having seen a couple people rock them, I decided to give them a try. Well, NO. The verdict is in. I cannot pull these off (round face, I think). Some of you may be intrigued, though, so check out Andy Wolf Eyewear’s Florence Cat Eye. More affordable option? I’m wearing a $9 pair from Amazon.
An honorable mention goes to these Sojos, solely because I have liked other sunglasses I’ve ordered from them in the past.
Classic Aviator
Got to love a classic pair of aviators. I’ve been saying (for years) that I will get some classic Ray Bans (the pair on the left above), but then I don’t. I’m scared of breaking them and/or losing them. I came across a pretty darn similar style of Mirrored Lens Aviators, though. So far so good!
The frame hasn’t bent and they have maintained their shape. I may have to tighten the little screws at some point, but other than that…loving these! I’ve been wearing them almost every day.
Embellished Sunglasses
Well, heyyyy there. Crystal embellished sunglasses? These are for you if you have a little bit of *extra* in you. The designer pair on the left is Mui Mui’s Runway Stone-Embellished Sunglasses. The Bling Cat Eye I am wearing may not be encrusted with crystals, but they are pretty fabulous. This is a fun way to make a statement, especially if you aren’t one to wear a lot of jewelry (me). psst. These are cute, too.
Clear, Crystal Sunglasses
Okay, these are the most EXTRA of all extra. Holy bling. I don’t hate them….not going to lie. The left is GUCCI (of course) and come in at only $1,380. Cheap. An even more affordable pair are the Oversize Square-Frame Sunglasses I am wearing on the right. Mine are a see-through grey, but they also come in pink.
I did notice that they were slightly crooked on my face when I tried them on. It may just have been the ones I was sent, but ya never know. Another option is this pair from Royal Girl.
Those are my favorite trends in sunglasses right now!
