Packing List: Visiting Portland In Summer

Hey, hey peeps. Visiting our lovely Portland, Oregon this summer? Here is what I’m wearing on the regular and would pack for a visit to my own hometown.

We’re pretty casual here, but outdoor cool. You want to be comfortable and have layers. It will be cool in the mornings and evenings, and hot in the afternoons, so a light jacket is perfect. If you’re planning to do any hiking in Forest Park, you may want a light sweatshirt to wear. And believe it or not, those of you from the South or the Midwest, like me, it’s actually cooler in the shade here! I know. Mind-blowing. After eight years here it still surprises me. Haha. #idonotmisshumidity

We’ve done away with plastic bags in the city, so bring a little tote or shopper like this cute striped one from Baggu for any shopping finds. A few favorite shops of mine — North of West, Wildfang, Powell’s City of Books, and Bridge & Burn — are all downtown and easily walkable if that’s where you’re staying. Your Fjallraven laptop backpack will be perfect for the plane, and any of your computer/tablet needs, but then you can easily use it as a day bag as you check out the city. You’ll find one of their stores downtown, too!

Until mid-July or August, I don’t really break out the shorts and when I do, I have a jacket with me or a long-sleeved top. It can get pretty sunny and hot out of the shade, so having that layer option is necessary, but again, low to no humidity, so it feels so niiiice. You won’t need to dress up for any typical outings here, so a cute pair of comfy wedges is what I’d pick to bring as a nicer shoe option. A comfy dress you can add accessories to for date night or sandals to for daytime is perfect, too, and the jumpsuit provides a similar easy day-to-night option. Throw a cute fitted tee under it for a completely different look! I love traveling with a fun graphic tee that adds a little pop of color to any outfit.

Look at all these fun photos from readers! Thanks so much for heeding our call for pics of Portland. Apparently, I’m a bad tourist in my own town when it comes to taking photos of iconic spots. Haha.

Thank you to Elizabeth, Jennifer, Tonia, Rachel, Sarah, Paige, Tiffany, Veronica, Amy & Amy for sending in pics for me! Y’all are amazing. Cheers! Hope you enjoyed your visits to our lovely city!

  1. Thank you thank you thank you! My husband and I are leaving tomorrow morning to spend the weekend in Portland. Your packing ideas are incredibly helpful! Now if only you could do something about the forecast… 😉

    • Oh wonderful timing! For real though. It is supposed to be warm mid week next week. Doh! I hope you enjoy regardless! I don’t think there’s supposed to be much rain at least! You’ll get the true Portland experience though. Oy. Haha.

  2. This is a pretty good list (I own that JCrew t-shirt!), but for anyone visiting Portland, the pedant in me is compelled to point out that most of those photos are not actually from Portland and would require a car to visit. Also, please don’t go to Voodoo Donuts. It is a tourist trap and is vastly overrated (source: have lived in Portland 25+ years).

  3. YES Laura! Couples trip to Portland in September. So I am devouring this Portland focused goodness. I love researching new places but at times I can find myself pretty deep in a rabbit hole, so these posts are helping me whittle down packing lists and things to see! We LOVE local suggestions. While we like bites of the touristy stuff, we want to get the real feel of where we visit. Keep your suggestions coming. Thanks!

  4. Hahah! How did I miss your call for photos? I just got back from Portland a couple of days ago. I recommend the drive out to Silver Falls state park – it’s so cool. Love the trails around the Hoyt Arboretum, as well! And I agree with the reader who said avoid Voodoo Donuts – it’s fun like “haha” but just go to Blue Star and get a quality treat. I found the BEST Indian place when I was there! They’re vegetarian, even! 🙂 It’s called Maruti, and it’s exquisite. The Paneer Tikka Masala was so good, and the red onion naan was such a delightful experience. Loved the shops on Mississippi, and of course, walked out of Powell’s with 8 new books. (As one does.) My only clothing suggestion I would add is cute joggers, like the green/olive ones Laura found us a few weeks ago – I bought those, but in coral, and I thought they were great for sunny Portland.

    I miss it already!

  5. Hope you have time to visit my hometown of McMinnville. Food, wine and shopping on our quaint Main Street (3rd Street). Have fun visiting family.

  6. The Postpartum Support International Conference is in Portland the last week of June! Tons of moms all about helping moms! Sharing this to the Facebook page.
