Weekend 1.15

Gang, I’ve got nothing. I’m (mostly) recovered from COVID, my Mom has left to go back to Michigan (sob!), and the kids are settling into school. This week has been one big transition and I’ve just been doing what I can which…admittedly…hasn’t been much. I sent a text early this week to the TME team that basically read ‘y’all on ya own’.

Next week should be better.

But the boys are settling into school and their ski/snowboard programs, and we have friends coming to visit this weekend, which is predicted to have temps of minus 20F…but I’m crazy like that so I like it.

Stay warm out there.

Years later, still the best. I keep getting questions about my Lole down parka. It’s not exciting, it’s just really flattering, really warm, and really comfortable. It’s also one of those long black puffer coats that is chic, not overly sporty or shiny or designed half to death. I’ve been trying to find some solid alternatives (mine is basically sold out) that meet that same criteria and I’ve found three possibilities: Burton’s (one reviewer said she *thinks* it’ll be too lightweight, but based on the tech specs it’s suuuuuper warm, so I’ll bet this one feels & functions like my Lole), The North Face’s Metropolitan Parka (size up, this one runs small), and this one from Lululemon.

Polartec + Joggers. I’ve been living in these Athleta Polartec joggers; they are seriously the warmest sweatpants I’ve ever owned. Perfectly comfortable for walking outside in frigid temps. Happily, Athleta recently re-stocked their sweatshirts, because I’m now the happy owner of the matching Polartec top. It’s seriously flattering, stretchy and comfortable (in addition to being crazy-warm). In a surprise twist, I went with color: ‘decadent red’.

A little bit fancy. Monica Vinader, sustainably made fine jewelry brand, is having a flash sale this weekend, and this necklace is calling my name. It’s the right amount of fancy and casual, and would look great alone or layered.

The coolest-ever rashguard. I know it’s only January, but my favorite rashguard (see it on me, here), the one that sold out in a hot sec last year, has just been restocked. Even better, there’s also some cute vintage briefs to match…and even a matching bikini top. Love.

Cute. I love the fit of rag & bone baseball hats, and this cheery yellow one is a fun little pick-me-up.

Cozy. Pax was obsessed with this candle lighter at a small boutique in Woodstock, and now we can’t stop using it. Fireplace, birthday candles, regular candles, etc. It’s bringing the cozy.

Checkmate. This chess set really IS the best chess set ever. The pieces are tournament weighted, but the board itself is made of a thick, flexible silicon, so it folds up easily for storage (or travel). We love ours.

Still no. A certain teenage boy keeps trying to convince me that these North Face slippers should be his winter boots because they’re so warm. SIGH.

Lemon chicken soup. I’ve been adding tons of lemon to our usual chicken noodle soup recipe and it’s delicious. This recipe looks similar and calls for fresh ginger, too. I’m in.

Truth. McSweeney’s suuuuper helpful Note of Reassurance From Your School District Regarding Our Updated Omicron Policies. I’m DYING.

Stay safe (and warm) out there!

  1. I *just* finished up a walk in -25 temps(got to love Northern MN) and was wearing the polar tech joggers from Athleta. They are my very favorite clothing lately, truly live up to the hype. Will have to jump on the sweatshirt.

  2. Oh, wow—that photo of you and your mom together took my breath away. So simple—but you can just feel the love and rapport between you two. So happy you could spend time together over the holidays!!
And I hear you on feeling … drained. And I didn’t even have COVID. But it’s just … a lot. Big hugs to you!

  3. I echo what Jennifer said, I saw that photo of you and it is one that simply radiates so much love and connection.

Now, talk to me about the joggers. What is the rise like? Athleta is a bit vague in their description.

Hope you have a great weekend with friends and start to feel more like yourself soon.

PS Thanks for that soup recipe. It sounds delicious!
