Sustainable, handcrafted, plant-based, and boho home decor inspiration from Black business owner and designer Justina Blakeney, plus her The New Bohemians book, goods and even her own site…is where we are this week with all the home greats. (Goods isn’t a strong enough word here.)
My high school bff asked for help with a few things in a new house this past week. In that discussion, I asked what we were aiming for, given that she has broad aesthetic range. She answered: Boho.
In recapping my short list and her words before we ended the call, so that I know what I’m keeping my eyes open for, I repeated back: Hobo. She laughed. I laughed. I’m a ‘lil bit tired these days, and maybe a ‘lil bit off too. Is it that obvious? Regardless, I haven’t gotten that word (the actual word: Boho) off my mind since, so we’re just going to go in that direction and maybe follow Justina Blakeney and The New Bohemians for a little inspiration, whilst we sort out my mind and get on all the right pages.
Bohemian(ish) favorite finds, a spotlight on a Black-owned business that nails sourcing all good things boho, and a few fantastic weekend home decor sales below, specifically focused on things sustainable, handcrafted, plant-based, eco-friendly, boho-inspired and on sale.
1/ Mudcloth Pillow Covers | Each as beautiful as the next, and even better in a grouping. Covers only, you’ll also need inserts, which is easy. Or, to freshen things up a bit, just order the covers and pop them over your existing pillows (size check required.)
2/ Woven Wall Hanging | Often, we see woven wall hangings in neutrals. Black is still a neutral by my estimation, but a far more intense, intentional and dramatic one. And I love the detailing of those three big wooden beads at the top. Also available in other forms and colors, this is just my favorite of them all.
3/ Eyes Bags | Small set of two eyes bags (check the dimensions.) Great for toting a few things around. Things like I dunno, extra masks, a water bottle with a straw, an easy snack, and some hand sanitizer. You know, new normal kinda things.
4/ Patio Stool | It’s faux wood and specifically labelled for a patio, but can certainly live indoors as well! And probably couldn’t be any sweeter of a great, functional accent piece.
5/ Handcrafted Bowls | Hand-painted, handcrafted, available in 8 patterns — and on sale!!! Mix and match your way to even more beautiful!
6/ Justina Blakeney The New Bohemians Book | Inspirational book, rests beautifully on a coffee table when not being actively page-turned.
7/ Woven Serving Tray | For carrying all the things from inside the house to outside for leisure time, and back and forth from the ottomans and poufs, or even just at rest and with a few well-edited items on a table, this oversized beauty has a reasonable price tag.
8/ The Measure of a Man Wall Art | MLK quote, and words to genuinely live by.
9/ Bohemian Honey Rattan Day Bed | Covered porch? Living space with an open space? Pretty much anywhere, would a sit on this daybed make you feel like you had taken a virtual vacay and been transported worlds away. Daybed only, you’ll need the cushion too.
10/ Antigone Rug by Justina Blakeney | When everything new looks old again, in the best of soft underfoot, and in beautiful ways!
Shop Wild is her tagline on the site. I don’t believe there to be better words than her own, from the same site:
WE BELIEVE THAT GOOD DESIGN INCREASES QUALITY OF LIFE.
WE BELIEVE IN THE HEALING POWER OF PLANTS, GOOD LIGHT AND FRESH AIR.
WE BELIEVE THAT COLOR HAS THE POWER TO BRING JOY.
WE BELIEVE THAT CREATIVITY AND GOOD VIBES CAN SAVE THE WORLD.

Hope the weekend brings you all great things, especially of the Bohemian sort — there’s a calm to be found in the unconventional and arts, especially when they are well-collected with love.
