Shana’s been on a relentless mission to get me running with her — for what seems like forever — and my default answer has always been “ugh, no way!” End of discussion. So the fact that I’m currently assembling my own serious (not ironic) ‘Winter Running Capsule Wardrobe’ is kind of blowing my mind.
* My prediction for M.V.P. in my winter running lineup? These comfy brushed interior Rainier Joggers that are on major sale (I sized down)*

jogger (s) | base layer (s) | funnel neck (s) | beanie
As someone who’s 47 years old and not exactly known for embracing ANY type of workouts (other than dance classes), I have somehow gotten newly hooked on running. Shana is a persistent gal, and I think she just finally caught me at a moment I was frustrated with my lack of energy and feeling open to something new.
She now has me so hooked, however, that I haven’t even attempted to weasel my way out of our group morning runs as the temperatures have dropped. And I tend to try and weasel my way out of all SORTS of morning activities…even in absolutely delightful weather.
I desperately don’t want to lose my momentum as the temperatures drop even further. So I now have a winter running outfit formula ready to go –one that’s comfortable and easy for a new (and sometimes reluctant) runner.
The New (& Sometimes Reluctant) Runner: A Winter Running Outfit Formula
jogger (s) | base layer (s) | half zip (s) | beanie
For Philly’s winter weather (typically in the 30’s-ish), this my wear-on-repeat winter running outfit formula (most of it is on major sale right now!) Each piece has enough technical features to be practical for running, but with the balance (I personally need) of being soft, comfy, and not too skin-tight or constrictive feeling. I hate squeezing myself into workout gear first thing in the morning.
With these lightweight and breathable pieces, I feel the chill when I step outside, but 60 seconds into my run, my body temperature is right where I want it to be.
- Brushed Interior Winter Joggers
- A Good Base Layer
- A Lightweight Fleece-Lined Sweatshirt (Half Zip or Funnel Neck)
- Winter Accessories (As Needed): Beanie, Vest, Gloves
A. Rainier Mid Rise Winter Jogger
jogger (s) | base layer (s) | half zip (s) | beanie
I realized on my very first winter run, I needed something warmer on my bottom half than my normal joggers. My legs were COLD! Shana loves her Rainier tights for cold-weather runs, so I bought a pair and like them (for tights), but as soon as I tried the Rainier jogger version I knew THOSE would be the winter-weather running pants getting the most use.

The main reason I love these joggers for my winter running is when I sized down they fit close to the body, but aren’t skin tight or squeezy. Most mornings the thought of squeezing myself into ultra tight leggings feels pretty unbearable, so reaching for cozy joggers is the much more appealing choice.
At the same time, I don’t like running in loose, flappy clothes — which is why these compression fabric joggers (when you size down) are a perfect balance. If you like them to fit with a bit more slouch, do your regular size. They also have a nice soft brushed lining that’s thicker and warmer than a typical exercise jogger, but they don’t feel overly thick or heavy (like some fleece lined options).
B. Base-Layer + Lightweight Fleece-Lined Sweatshirt

I actually needed to go the opposite direction temperature-wise for my top half. I first attempted running on a cold day in my standard fleece jacket that I already owned, but it was way to heavy. I was burning up and a hot sweaty mess. I needed something lighter and more breathable.
I switched out my heavy fleece for the combination of a good base layer (that’s nice and stretchy) and a lightweight performance fleece-lined sweatshirt (one half zip shorter one and one funnnel neck longer one).

I’m super happy with the look, fit, feel, and warmth of both sweatshirts…great cozy layers, but not too heavy.
C. Add A Vest, Beanie, & Gloves (As Needed)

For running in 30 degree-ish weather this past week, adding a beanie to the combination has been the trick to keeping my body temperature comfortable. For even colder days, I’ll add a beanie and this SUPER lightweight vest (per Shana’s recommendation), in addition to gloves.

For you seasoned winter runners, anything I’m forgetting? Philadelphia typically stays around the 30’s this time of year, so I think I may be set with this formula!

If you have someone in your life who loves staying active during the winter months…or maybe you know someone like me who is trying to stay motivated to keep active despite the cold temps… Athleta has SUCH a great active winter lifestyle gift selection. Or…for the friend or family member who likes to stay both cozy and stylish all winter long? Athleta’s Alpine sweater line is quite lovely.
