As a gal who comes in at a whopping 5’4″ and has already lived through ’90s fashion once, it took me a little bit to get back into this oversized clothing trend.
Is it comfy? Why yes, of course. But with my shorter frame, I had to play around with these styles a lot to get the right combo of comfy and on-trend without it overwhelming my more petite stature.
I needed to see the oversized aesthetic in action on other people for a few months before I could fully embrace it again…
Recently, I put together this lovely Staud sweater (that I wrote about here) with my favorite wide-leg jeans… and I was hooked. The finishing touch that really pulls it together? A great pair of chunky lug sole boots. (Mine are sold out but this pair by Steve Madden is similar.)
A Cozy Fall Balancing Act: Slouchy Sweater, 90s Jeans & Chunky Boots

I have a few thoughts about putting an outfit like this together: if I had gone with slimmer jeans, we’d miss some of the slouchy-on-slouchy trend we’re seeing everywhere. If I went with a lower profile shoe in this outfit, the shoes might get lost.
The balance here for me is how all three pieces work together. I’m typically all for contrast in my outfits, but bigger is kinda better (within reason) for this look.
I do think super wide-leg jeans would be tough for me to pull off (they’re tough for me to pull off even with a slim-fitting top) but hmm… these wide-leg Moussy jeans are just slim enough to get that cool slouchy vibe without overwhelming my frame.

Add A Little Structure + Color To The Oversized Outfit
Another element that worked for me with this look is the stand-up collar on this Staud sweater (you know I love a stand-up collar moment.) It adds structure to the whole look without making it too preppy or stuffy…just cool. And it’s a great design element that draws the eye up and keeps my head from looking small in all this fabric.
The most important thing? I’m super comfy in this outfit and I really love it. That’s what matters most.
The distressing on these ripped wide-leg jeans is very me, the black chunky boots add some edge (also me) and the colorful-but-not-too-wacky sweater is fun without being — here’s that word again — overwhelming. Oh, and we mustn’t forget the gorgeous See by Chloe bag in deep green. It adds a finishing touch with a bit of structure, a lux fall color, and details that elevate the look.

Regardless of how we break it down or put it all together, I love this comfy outfit for fall and will be rocking it regularly.
I’ve rounded up a few more options below for each piece…the oversized sweaters, wide(ish) leg jeans, and lug sole boots. A lot of the oversized sweaters I found are also striped, but click through to see additional solid colors and other variations.
Are you doing slouchy-on-slouchy this fall? If you’ve figured out other ways to style looser-fitting clothes I’d love to hear what you’re loving, too!
Until next time!
