Raise your hand if you love an all-black outfit. I do. Monochromatic outfits in any color are always effortless whether they’re all-white, navy, brown, green, or — that’s right — black. I’ve previously shared 7 Tips to Make a Black Outfit Fancy and Not Boring, but after falling in love with these Topshop black jeans (non-distressed version here), I’m bringing you a casual (yet fun!) all-black outfit.

All Black Outfit Ideas For Fall From A Color Analyst

In case you don’t know my background, I’m a former black-wearer-turned-color-lover. I’m a personal color analyst. I analyze people’s unique complexions and help them discover the rainbow of colors that allows them to glow (without much effort and makeup). And guess what? While black is not my best color, it’s also not my worst, so I follow some guidelines to make it work when I decide to go for it.

1. Embrace The Classics: Black Jeans & White Sneakers

Casual, in my book, has become a synonym for comfortable. I’m mostly wearing drapey tops, relaxed jeans, and classic white sneakers this fall. A classic sneaker is one of the most effortless shoes to wear with straight and full-length jeans. My current favorites are my trusty Veja campo (pictured below) and my new pair of Tory Burch Howell sneakers in cream.

My trusty white Veja trainers are an easy and classic pairing with black jeans.

As for jeans, I’ve been having more and more trouble wearing fitted jeans lately, so anything with a relaxed fit is quickly becoming my most-worn denim. After years of seeing other TME contributors love the Topshop Dad Jeans, I finally gave them a try and I too fell in love.

These are now my most-worn black jeans.

Fit notes: These jeans run small. I wear a 27, sometimes a 26, but with these, I had to size up to a 28. Lengthwise, while choosing from the petite and regular lengths, the latter worked perfectly for a full-length look on my small frame. Expect regular to be more of an ankle length if you’re tall.

2. Find A Moto Jacket That Suits Your Personal Colors

Yes, a black moto jacket would work to keep it fully monochromatic, but I often prefer to have an all-black base and then add in neutrals or brighter colors. Here’s where I start to play with my best color palette to make a black outfit work better for me.

Finding a moto jacket that suits your personal colors is a stylish way to upgrade the all-black outfit.

My complexion is deep and neutral warm, so I decided to go for a deep neutral color that added some warmth to my look. But let’s say you have softer and cooler-toned characteristics—a neutral blue or medium to charcoal grey will soften the overall look. By contrast, a tan or olive jacket would be another great option for warmer-toned people.

This All Saints Elora jacket is cropped — making it perfect for my frame and proportions. It’s sold out in my exact color but is available in a gorgeous black-gold combo as well as cognac — you can see it in more detail here. Another option for a beautiful deep berry color is the Barfern style also from All Saints.

3. Add A Pop Of Color With A Crossbody Bag

A yellow bag might sound scary, but it is fun and easy to wear with a neutral-toned outfit. The same goes for any other bright color. You can use a contrasting color as I did or keep the color closer in hue or saturation to the jacket for a more subtle accent.

4. Finishing Touches: Lipstick & Jewelry

If I forget to put on lipstick/lipgloss and a pair of earrings, even the smallest hoops, I feel like I never got ready. Seriously. I get a feeling of nakedness… so you’ll rarely find me without, even if I’m running to Target in loungewear at 10 pm to get something before they close. True story. Now, remembering to do more than that can become too much for my neurodivergent brain, so depending on my day, I’ll add a bracelet and ring as I did here. It’s one of those ways to make a simple outfit more ME.

  1. Coco Peach Jewelry: Based in Chicago, Jessica is a fantastic designer and offers beautiful high-quality pieces. I’ve had mine for over a year, and they’re in great shape after weekly wear.
  2. Olt. Embera: Owned by a fellow Colombian Immigrant. Tatiana works directly with Embera indigenous women in Colombia, creating the most beautiful handmade pieces. This allows Embera women and their families to live with dignity.
  3. The Lip Bar: When I tell you I can’t live without Lip Bar it is because I can’t. I’ve tried looking for another option when my favorites are sold out, and no. Their Lip Liner (in the color Nude Lala) and the First Lady Lipgloss is all I need. If you’re lucky, you can get them at Target.

5. Be Yourself and Have Fun

Black can sometimes be seen as a protective layer. I’ve worn it that way when I wanted to hide and pasar desapercibida “go unnoticed,” and that’s ok, sometimes we need to feel protected. But I also love to wear black as a fun canvas that, with a few brushstrokes, becomes a projection of joy.
