Winter Snow Boots: The Best & Worst of “Dressing Room” Selfies

I considered titling this post, “That really cold, really windy day, I took 11 pairs of snow boots out on my deck, along with my giant mirror, to take selfies — humiliating myself in front of the back-of-the-house neighbors, and all of the neighborhood squirrels who really can get pretty high up on houses and make a lot of noise.” Not catchy enough? I guess not. So, as long as you consider my deck a type of dressing room (yes, the lighting is much better up there than most actual dressing rooms), then the title I decided on is also accurate — although not nearly as accurate as the initial one I was considering.

I was on a mission with these selfies. This year, I am determined to be on top of my winter game, so I bought 11 pairs of snow boots (yes…I will return most of them), but I wanted to get a good feel for what was out there, what I liked, how they looked with the actual jeans and coats I would wear them with… and then be able to share what I found with you guys. I bought only well-known brands that I was most familiar with, but I included some other brands (including the crazy expensive, but also crazy beloved La Canadiennes) in the roundup at the end of the post, if you want to explore more options. You know I’m pretty opinionated and picky about my shoes, at least in terms of comfort, so…here we go!

Tall Winter Snow Boots

I like to wear tall snow boots when it’s freezing and I want every inch of my body insulated and protected. These are the boots I also wear when it has REALLY snowed! I hate when I have to maneuver —stepping through snow banks on the corners — and my jeans get soaked when my boots aren’t tall enough. Tall snow boots are often, though, more cumbersome to put on, clunky, and heavy to walk in, so I was looking for the perfect mix of snow/cold protection and comfort.

Kamik Vulpex

These are my favorite of the tall boots. They’re not quite as tall as some of the others, but I think they’re tall enough. The color and pattern is super-cute (even cuter in person), they are super-soft inside, cozy, very warm, and they have a side zip in addition to the laces for quick on and off. They also felt nice to walk in —not exactly like a shoe, but not as clunky as a lot of the boots — a perfect combo. I’m between sizes and sized down, but I probably should have sized up. They fit fine as is, but I like my snow boots on the roomier side.

Tecnica Moon Boots

These were surprisingly my #2 pick — they are so fun! These moon boots are light and bouncy, and feel like what I imagine it would feel like to walk on the moon (appropriate brand name for sure!) They are super-toasty, and I LOVE the look of them. They only come in 3 size ranges, though, which is kind of funny. I got the size 35-38 (I’m a 38), but they were definitely too small. I would need the medium size. The calves were tight (b/c of the super-thick insulation), but maybe the bigger size would have more leg room? They are really comfy, but definitely feel like you’re wearing a snow boot. They have non-shiny moon boots that come in a ton of fun colors as well.

Kamik Starling

These felt great on. They felt more like a shoe than a boot…a lot of flexibility in the sole and not clunky at all. They were a little snug, so I would size up if you’re between sizes or like your snow boots a little roomy (like me). I personally didn’t like the style quite as much as some of the others, but the feel is great and they’re a nice-looking boot. I would personally like them better if I added a lace with some color or design like these.

Sorel Joan of Arctic Boot

I ordered these boots KNOWING they would be the ones I kept, but they are unfortunately not for me. They’re heavy, and I walk like a duck in them. I also found them pretty difficult to get on and off. I talked with Annmarie about it (because she rocks this type of boot and says they are incredibly warm and pretty much perfect for her), and she thinks they may not work for me because I’m a shortie (5’2”) with smaller (size 7) feet. My cousin who is long-legged with size 9.5 feet looked amazing in this type of boot and said they were incredibly comfortable for her. The inside is super-soft, reviews say they last forever, people rave that they are extremely warm and great for lots of snow, and the style is so good…just not for me.

Bogs

I wanted to love these boots too. They are comfort rated to -40 F, are super-soft, lightweight, flexible, and I really like the color in person (the photo doesn’t do it justice). They are pull-on boots, though, and I don’t have the patience in the winter for any kind of struggle to get them over my calves. As I said, though, once they were on, they felt great…like a cushy, lightweight sleeping bag for your feet and calves. I’m thinking if you have slimmer calves and are looking for a warm cozy SUPER-lightweight boot, these would work great.

Mid-Calf Winter Snow Boots

If you want to own just one pair of winter snow boots or you don’t get a ton of snow or you’re on the much shorter side, I think the mid-calf boot might be your answer. They’re less “massive” than the tall ones, but plenty tall in most snow (at least here in Philly) that they would still keep you dry and warm.

Sorel Whitney Lace Boots

These Sorels are awesome. Lightweight and they feel much more like a shoe than a boot. Easy to walk in for sure. I also love the black and white laces…add just enough oomph to make them interesting. They’re a bit snug, so I would size up if you’re between sizes or just want more room to wiggle those toes.

Kamik Bailee

These weren’t “wow-me” boots, but I liked them. I liked the charcoal color, plus they’re soft and comfy, plenty warm, and easy to get on and off. The feel is a nice combo between shoe and boot, and they get great reviews. Really, the only thing that didn’t wow me was the style. I kept thinking of the black and white laces in the Sorels above. It would be easy to switch out the laces, though, with something like these if you wanted more pizazz. A pop of color would look great on the charcoal!

Sorel Winter Carnival Boots

This blue is so good. So so good. And this teal and yellow version of the same boot is just as good if not better! But, alas….sigh….they aren’t the boots for me. I’m having the same issue with these as I had with the Sorel Joan of Arctic. They’re just too clunky. They’re SO cute, though. I love the bright color and the sherpa peeking out. Reviews say they are incredibly warm, and last forever, and are pretty much just fabulous. Some reviews say sizing down helps with the clunkiness, so maybe I try that? Sorel Duck Boot Lovers, tell me…do you just get used to the feel of them after a while?

Short Winter Snow Booties

I’m so into the short snow booties right now — actually, I really want to keep one pair of the short ones and one pair of the medium or tall ones. Holiday gift to myself perhaps? I think the short ones are perfect for those days when there’s still snow or slush or it’s cold, but you don’t want to feel like you’re wearing snow boots all day long. Or…if you want to wear jeans OVER your boots rather than tucked in. I like the look of a straight cropped jean worn right at the top of these short boots.

Sorel Kinetic Wedge Boot

I think this is my favorite of the short boots, but I actually REALLY liked them all. These wedges are so fun. Ever since I tried on Sorel Wedges for the comfort shoe post, I’ve been hooked. Everyone said the wedges were uber-comfy, but I didn’t believe it until I actually tried them. And these are so cute, right? Part sneaker, part bootie, part snow boot, part wedge…this boot could serve many purposes. For winter snow purposes, though, it has a cozy micro-fleece lining, waterproof material, and a nice cinch at the top to make sure the elements don’t get in.

Sorel Kinetic Boot

I LOVE this boot, but unfortunately, Shana bought them too. Ugh! I told her to return them immediately, and that they looked HORRIBLE on her, but she didn’t bite. I think it’s payback for me buying the Uniqlo Navy Puffer first and telling her we couldn’t be twinsies. This is a great boot for the same reasons as mentioned above for the Kinetic Wedge Boot. Super comfy, feels like you’re wearing a sneaker, but still waterproof and warm. And so cute.

Sorel Joan of Arctic Wedge

Oh, Sorel wedges…how we love you! How can you be so comfy and stylish at the same time, oh miracle shoe? This is a great snow bootie. Fuzzy shearling coziness on the top, micro-fleece lining inside, waterproof, and super-comfortable to walk in. I think the black lux version may be even better, though — So Pretty! Both are heavier than the Kinetic sneaker-like snow bootie, but still feel great on your feet.  Sorel. Kamik. Bogs. Technica. A few more shots of how you can wear straight leg jeans OVER the short winter snow booties instead of tucked in. Also, Jess does a fantastic job of styling up winter snow booties here.

  1. I bought and immediately returned Sorel’s Out and About boots, then did the same thing with a pair of their snow boots (I forget the style name). I don’t know what it is, but they’re so hard for me to wear. I’m a 9 and about 5’5″, so maybe I’m just not tall enough for them to be comfortable? You look so good in all of these! But I love most the Kinetic boots on you, both pairs, the Kamik Starrling, and the Sorel Wedges the best. Thank you for such a thorough review!

    • I’ve also had trouble with Sorel’s Out & About boots!! They run….many sizes too small? But then by the time you figure that out the fit is still weird. I’ve had the best luck with Sorel’s classics (the 1964 whatevers), Sorel’s wedges (true to size), and these new Kinetic boots that DO run a half size small.

    • Oooooh. Thanks for the suggestion, Anna. I tried a pair of Blondos last year that weren’t very comfortable for me, but glad to hear they worked for you. Would love to give these a try and see if they are better. Can you walk in them all day? I love a bootie that can transition from casual to dressy AND that has good traction….great find. Thanks for sharing.

    • Good to know! I can’t bring myself to buy a heavy boot with the milder winters we have, but really helpful to know those have worked for serious snow conditions…Boston winters are no joke for sure!

  2. Would the Kinetic boots be good for winter hiking? Or any of the other pairs, in your opinion? I like to hike in cold weather in MI (not in tons of snow–mostly trail walking). My current tall winter boots are heavy lugging around for 3-4 miles of fast hiking. Thanks for the roundup!

    • I think they would, V, if you like the feel of a sneaker for hiking. They are insulated, waterproof, and are very comfy to walk in. That being said, though, they are short…if you wanted something taller that still was light weight and felt like a sneaker I would try the Sorel Whitney (mid-calf) or the Kamik Starling. Both felt like a shoe, were light weight, and were flexible (which I like when I’m hiking/walking). I know a lot of people like heavier, sturdier, boots though when hiking…anyone else want to weigh in?

  3. Fabulous reviews! I wanted to really luv Sorel boots, but can’t get used to the clomping duck walking in them – LOL! When I was looking for a pair of snow boots (I live in Alaska), I found & LOVE these! Columbia’s Heavenly lace up middies in zinc (navy blue). These are warm, lightweight, waterproof, & super cute! They hug your feet like a pair of slippers & keep you warm like a wonderful blanket! I hope you get a chance to try some on! Thank you 🙂

  4. I hate wearing the Sorel Joan of Arctic boots. I bought a pair and after one winter of not wearing them much because they were soooo clunky and heavy and hard to get on (and uncomfortable to sit in the car in!) I sold them in eBay. They look so cool but it is just not worth it. Oh, and I’m 5’11” so it’s not a height issue you’re having with them. They are just horribly uncomfortable.
