Snow Sports

We've been getting some questions about the cutest (and most functional) ski or snowboard gear, so here's what I've been wearing for years, as well as some new (and very exciting) pieces that I recently tried (a few of these were recently tested on the slopes as well!). I tried to include notes on the varying lengths of snowpants...
It's the kind of ski suit I've always wanted, way back when I was fan-girling about hot snowboarders (married to 1 now--#goals) + dreaming of being part of the "in" ski crowd.
For years now I have been so jealous of Shana & Mike's Epic Ski Adventures with their boys. My brother Adam and his family also ski...so it almost seemed like there was some sort of great conspiracy that allowed them to go on amazing ski vacations together. In her defense, though, Shana has been pressuring encouraging us to get...
Halfdays offers women's ski jackets & snow pants in vibrant colors; no more 'shrink it and pink it'. Even more, they're woman-owned & committed to sustainability.
I recently came across Halfdays ("outdoor apparel for the modern woman") and was immediately impressed with their aesthetic. Skiing (like many other sports) tends to cater to men, and the gear made specifically for women often feels like an afterthought. I once rented some mens' performance skis in Utah...simply because (according to the guide), the men's skis were...
Staying warm + cute is totally possible. Follow the same rule as applying skincare -- add layers thinnest to thickest. Second-skin leggings, a long sleeve shirt w/ thumb holes, cuffed sweats & a good warm jacket. Ta-da!
As I sit down to type on this sunny afternoon, the temperature outside is 5 degrees but -- wait for it -- feels like negative 13. Ahhh, winter up north. I'm not what you would call a ski bunny -- I have childhood memories of nearly tumbling down the steep side of the ski hill during a school field...
But winter? Presque Isle in the winter is...magic. "The island" is how locals refer to Presque Isle State Park, a peninsula that juts out into Lake Superior.
"The island" is how locals refer to Presque Isle State Park, a peninsula north of town that juts out into Lake Superior. In the summer, you can find us jumping off of Black Rocks, or walking along the breakwall to the lighthouse. Presque Isle is such a shockingly beautiful place that even landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (one of...
I'm not really daunted by winter. While some people hibernate, I just...layer. UGG boots, fleece leggings, MOTHER jeans & cashmere...+ a few more cold-weather accessories.
I am definitely, absofreakinglutely an outdoor girl. I need fresh air on my face, I need to breathe it in, I need to walk and move and rearrange my thoughts in a way I've only ever been able to do when outside. I also grew up in Marquette, MI, where below zero temps were the norm Dec - March,...
For playing in snow, all we need is waterproof & water-resistant gear to stay warm & dry. Winter boots, fleece-lined pants, beanie hats, insulated mittens...Mens & kids, inside.
Remember how I said you might go stir-crazy if you don't enjoy some sort of snow activity in the winter? That goes for kids too--especially for kids. Fortunately, Greenlea's usually pretty excited to get outside. Uncle Mike took her skiing last year (she loved it), and she always has fun sledding with her cousins...Auntie Shana even got her on...
We're trying snowshoeing! Backcountry believes even "indoor" girls can enjoy outdoor experiences. Maybe it's a Sign From The Universe. Here's what to wear.
This post is sponsored by Backcountry & ShopStyle. Marquette, Michigan, (my hometown) is a winter wonderland. It's snowy and gorgeous, and people come from miles around to experience it. We have extensive snowmobile trails, a ski hill that's just minutes from downtown, and a gorgeous lake to surf in (yes, even in the winter!) . . . or just look...
Go to Alta, everyone said. You'll love Alta. And...I suspect they're right. But Pax had recently taken to snowboarding and was currently a solid obsession level 11 (on a 10-point scale) and Alta doesn't allow snowboarders. Which, for our parent, ski-team-crowd, isn't usually a problem. But Pax, as many of you well know, is almost always my problem child...
We had a super-fun vacation at Boyne Highlands resort in Michigan. Skiing, S'mores-making, swimming & dining — perfect for family-friendly bonding. Go!
Over the Christmas holidays, Mike and I — between visiting family in Michigan — surprised the boys with a few days of skiing at Boyne Highlands, located near the top of the mitten in what we call Northern Michigan. (Not the Upper Peninsula, mind you. Still the mitten.) Given that it was December and the midwest and #climatechange...it rained...
