Pattern Play with Floral Pants

Between my interview and taking over The Mom Edit Instagram Story (@themomedit) a few weekends ago, you may think you know everything there is to know about me. But, I have one more confession: I don’t own a single pair of black slacks. I’m not sure exactly when that happened, I swear I used to have a ton. But somehow, over the years, the few times I’ve gone to grab a pair from the closet, they’re nowhere to be found. They literally don’t exist. You know what’s there instead? Printed pants. Rows and drawers and piles of them. Bold houndstooth, subtle polka dots, and everything in between.

I found these H&M cropped floral pants that make my heart sing. Like, Mariah Carey, plug-an-ear-with-my-finger falsetto sing for this pattern and all the others offered. Not to mention the price point is on point. And seriously, show me a better spring print…I’ll wait…Kidding, I won’t wait. Let’s jump into this pattern play and 3 ways to try it:

Patterned Pants, 3 Ways

1. Gingham with a Twist

Are y’all loving all the gingham this season? I mean, it’s always a spring/summer staple, but it feels really fresh this year. Get into the sweetest bow detail on this Banana Republic pink gingham top! It’s just dressy enough for slacks, but I see them doing double duty with skinny jeans, too!

Outfit Details

Top  Eesh, this Banana Republic gingham top is selling out fast because, apparently, no one else thought about making pink gingham…trust me, I’ve looked. I did manage to find you another pink top there, as well as a lovely blue option with a pretty bow detail by Beckett from Nordstrom.

Pants  The detail of the print in these H&M floral pants is just gorge! It has just enough stretch for my curves. I also linked the black pair I wore on Easter (also featured on TME’s Instagram #OOTD), but I sized up in those because the fit was a tad straighter and had a side zipper.

Backpack  I read my TME interview and realized I needed to replace my backpack. Enter the blush “Tamitha” bag by Aimee Kestenberg; the color should get me through the spring. I also linked to taupe/navy versions.

Shoes  I’m always on the hunt for a nude shoe for my skin tone. Spoiler alert: It’s hard to find! The good thing about this Mix No. 6 “Lucee” lucite heel is that it’s always going to be the perfect nude. And, it makes me feel like Cinderella, so there’s that.

Earrings   I’m really not good with jewelry, but I’ve been digging this braided hoop earring set from Forever 21. Literally wearing with everything. #sorrynotsorry

2. Striped Pastel Camisole

I am so ready to shed these thick winter layers! A delicate camisole in pastel purple is just what Mother Nature (and my mother) ordered. And, did I mention it’s satin…and lined? I’m really impressed by this top, and not just because it’s in my favorite color. Funny thing is, I love purple, but haven’t ever really liked pastels…I refused to let my mother dress me in those colors. So, don’t show her this post. Actually, go ahead and show her because she’s going to want this H&M faux suede jacket. It’s technically outerwear, but lightweight enough to wear as part of your outfit for a killer third piece.

Outfit Details

Top – This striped camisole from Express is perfectly flowy, perfectly striped, and perfectly purple. And the neckline is juuuust right for the workday or date night.

Jacket – I’ve clearly got a thing for blush and this classy faux suede H&M jacket is no different. It’ll make a perfect transitional piece.

Pants – The detail of the print in these H&M floral pants is just gorge! It has just enough stretch for my curves. I also linked the black pair I wore on Easter (just featured on TME’s Instagram #OOTD), but I sized up in those because of the side zipper.

Backpack – I read my TME interview and realized I needed to replace my backpack. Enter the blush “Tamitha” bag by Aimee Kestenberg; the color should get me through the spring. I also linked to taupe/navy versions.

Earrings   I’m really not good with jewelry, but I’ve been digging this braided hoop earring set from Forever 21. Literally wearing with everything. #sorrynotsorry

Belt – I love belts! It’s good to have a basic brown in your wardrobe, like my skinny belt from Target’s Universal Thread.

Necklace –  My husband got me this clay pendant necklace for Mother’s Day with my children’s initials. I love how timeless it is.

Sunglasses (similar) – My sunnies have sold out since my daughter found them for me, but I found a similar pair for you.

3. Something Buttoned, Something Blue

I get it: You want to try some pattern play at your 9-to-5, but don’t want Susan in Accounting looking at you funny. This striped Abercrombie & Fitch button-down provides both pattern play and balance in a classic way. You’ll definitely be wearing this with other outfits. Same with the drapey jacket…I love that it’s ivory and not taupe. And the lining feels sooo good, even with the oxford shirt. I think I’d like it better untied with this outfit but love that it has a tiny belt because I cinch everything.

Outfit Details

Top – The fabric of this A&F button-down shirt has a linen vibe that wasn’t sure would dress up well, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Jacket  TBH, I’ve yet to meet a longline sleeveless vest that I don’t love, but color of this Express jacket and the lining make it a standout.

Pants – The detail of the print in these H&M floral pants is just gorge! It has just enough stretch for my curves. I also linked the black pair I wore on Easter (also featured on TME’s Instagram #OOTD), but I sized up in those because of the side zipper.

My floral pants may be the only thing keeping spring alive in my heart since we had snow AGAIN here in Central Ohio this week. Grab a pair and summon spring with me! Which look is your fave? I seriously couldn’t chose, but I can’t wait to hear yours and where you’re going to wear it!

Thanks, Belinda, SO glad to be here! I’m glad you like the pants, I hope you find ones you like!

  1. Tiarra is everything! I cannot stop laughing about “Susan in Accounting”. Love your spirit, Tiarra. Xo back atcha.

  2. Love it! And love seeing clothing featured for those of us who work in an office environment where jeans aren’t allowed but you still want to look cool with a twist. I love pattern mixing too – the only thing that could have made this any more perfect would have been a splash of animal print. More please!!

    • Tiarra Householder on

Oooohhh animal print…yes, I definitely need to work that into an upcoming post. Laura just shared the most awesome leopard booties on her date night post that I NEED in my life. And like you sd, it’ll all work in the office, too!

  3. This is advanced level fashion! You are just what The Mom Edit needed, so glad you’re here and sharing your knowledge and skills with us!

You’re too kind, thanks! I know what TME readers are used to, so I definitely had to bring it for my first post. Thank you for reading!

  4. These outfits are awesome! I got to have those pants! I love me some budget friendly finds like this. Thanks for the post!

    • Tiarra Householder on

Thanks Whitney! Definitely try these pants or one of the million other prints! I’m all about balancing budget items w/splurges; these pants were a steal!

  5. I am so happy you joined. These outfits are on point, translatable between the office and the weekend. Nice work.

    • Tiarra Householder on

Yay, I’m happy, too! I agree, these pants definitely have definitely refreshed my work wardrobe, but I’ll also rock on the weekend with a slightly more casual heeled sandal or basic sneaker (think Keds).

I absolutely love this! I’ve been reinspired (is that even a word) recently by so many of the posts shared by TME ladies. However, as a 54 year old semi retired gal trying to start my own biz I’m on a serious budget and can’t afford the price tag on a lot of the looks they’ve shared. I’ve been able to pull off some of their looks by finding less expensive versions of pieces they’ve shared but this makes it sooo much easier. I’ve never bought anything from H&M..do their pants run TTS?

    • Tiarra Householder on

“Reinspired” should definitely be a word. Congrats on everything you have going on, sheesh! These particular H&M pants are TTS. I had to size up in the black pair bc it was a slightly different (higher) rise and a side zip. Overall, I’d say their pants are TTS. Good luck!

  7. I can safely say I am not a pastel person-says the girl claiming that if I wear camo jeans with my black turtleneck and black booties I can call it a “spring” outfit–but outfit number 2 especially has me thinking florals and pale purple (wait, wouldn’t that be lavendar?) need to be in my rotation….thanks for the inspiration!

    • Tiarra Householder on

Right?! I was pleasantly surprised with that color! Thanks for reading…I love all camo, but hope you find something a tad springier that works!

  8. Elizabeth Rafter on

Love the more budget friendly options here! Like someone else said, I often go for the look of the TME, not the exact thing because five kids are expensive! I love having a direct link to something right in my price range. Especially the striped Abercrombie top! Cute!!!

    • Tiarra Householder on

Girl, I’m barely surviving life with my TWO, so hats off to ya! I’m all about the bargain (thank heavens for the weekly sales report!), so I’ll keep them coming!

  9. Yes! So happy to see outfits I can wear to work on TME. (I love Shana’s graphic t’s and jeans for weekends, but that just won’t fly at my staff meetings!) Thanks, Tiarra!

    • Tiarra Householder on

Ah, the slow death of meetings *facepalm*. Glad to help! If you can’t seem to stay awake during your next one, just look at your floral pants and dream of all the spring fun you’ll have afterward!

  10. A-freaking-dorable. Funny enough, my mom just gave me a pair of cropped black floral pants and they’re super cute, but I was wondering if I could pull them off. Thanks for giving me confidence to take the leap!

    • Tiarra Householder on

How are moms always one step ahead of us? Anyway, take that leap! I have a feeling it’s all gonna come up roses for you 😉

  11. I’m so glad you joined the Mom Edit team. I’m really enjoying your personality and style. However, the lighting (editing?) of your photos is really jarring. They are so dark and blurry. Is that a style choice?

    • Tiarra Householder on

Hey Cora, thanks for reading! I hope you found a few pieces you like, but if you prefer brighter pics, those are coming, too!
