Here’s Where I Shop When I Want to Mix It Up (with #DressingRoomSelfies)

Shopping is like finances—in a way. We’ve been having all this finance talk here in our household, because my husband recently left his job to work on his own business, so we’ve had to change some things and have been meeting with our financial advisor. You can’t put your eggs in just one basket, so diversifying is necessary. It saves you money and also makes your life a little more fun. I know shopping is not part of a financial plan. Maybe it is? Smart shopping could be a part, haha! However, with this job of mine, I started putting things in perspective, and came to the conclusion that I need to diversify the places where I shop.

The main reason is to be exposed to different brands and different clothing, and to get out of my comfort zone. Let’s be honest, shopping all the time from the same place can get boring. I’ve noticed it puts me in a mindset where I don’t want to try new things. Doesn’t it happen to you? You get to that one store and immediately know in which section you’re going to take a look, and then don’t check anything else? Well, many times the pieces that I end up loving the most are those that are not exactly what I’m looking for. Lately, I’ve found that rotating my key retailers keeps me active, and looking above-and-beyond my normal. I also love the savings. For real! I’ve saved so much money by checking other retailers for a piece I want to buy.

One of the places I’ve started to get things from is Bloomingdale’s. Years ago I used to think that it was very luxurious, and even though yes, they do have some investment brands, they also carry more affordable lines. They also have great sales. There’s actually a big one happening at the end of this month—the 28th to be exact. You don’t (actually you do) know how much money I saved this day at Bloomie’s by pre-shopping some stuff that will go on sale by the end of the month. I asked the saleswoman if there was any sale and she said, “well, if you’re not in a hurry to have this, I can pre-sell it to you, and you can pick it up on the 28th when a lot of stuff goes on sale.” SOLD. I had never done this at another department store, and I was amazed!

Without further ado, I’m going to leave you with some items I tried on at the store. I found casual everyday things, great jeans, dresses, and some matching sets. I always get super-overwhelmed at brick-and-mortar stores when checking rack after rack, so I’m totally sure I missed some great stuff.

Summer Must-haves

BCBG Lace-up Striped dress – Wearing XXS. Love this woven tunic. The pattern is gorgeous, and I see it as a great beach cover-up, and also as a casual option with flat sandals. Of course it would look amazing with heels!

rag & bone Directional Striped dress – Wearing XS. This dress and comfy sandals or sneakers for a casual-yet-stylish everyday look. I felt it ran big, but I’m small-chested so that may be a reason. The fabric felt good, and I love those seams on the front and back.

Bella Dahl frayed striped dress – Wearing S. I could have definitely fit in an XS. Soft and lightweight. I see it as a great cover up, but also as a pretty top layer over a slip dress, or a tank top and shorts. It’s see-through.

BCBG Shoulder Tie Top – Wearing XS – I found this top to be very flattering. As a matter of fact, I got it. It looks great with it’s matching shorts, and also with jeans as shown above.

Patch Pocket Drawstring Utility Shorts – Wearing XS. So, the shorts run big around the waist. They were falling off, not a lot though. Love the length (3″ inseam), the fit, and also how good they look with the top, but also with a bodysuit or another more casual shirt.

Top –BCBG Ruffle Hem Eyelet  – Wearing XS. Easy breezy top. Love the wrap and loose fit. It has the snap to avoid any wardrobe malfunction, and also looks great with denim shorts or jeans. Watch out for a pic near the end of the post.

Shorts –BCBG eyelet pleated shorts – Wearing XXS. They fit perfectly, waist a tiny bit tight, but other than that, the length and fit is perfect. Also comes in black.

Vince Camuto keyhole tank – Wearing XS. Available in 4 more colors. Between us, I loved how it made my small boobs look bigger—haha!

Bella Dahl Beaded Chambray pants – Wearing XS. There’s really nothing like some comfy pants for summer. I’m not a fan of the lower rise, but I know they would look great on somebody who likes that fit. Love the pretty beads along the side seam and how good they look with pretty much anything.

Do and Be Crossover Chambray Jumpsuit – Wearing size S. I love that it is very lightweight and comfortable. It runs small and I’m usually XS. Needs the hem altered if you’re petite like I am. On sale for under $50.

Pretty Dresses

Bardot Botanica Lace dress – Wearing XS. Pretty much obsessed with this dress and wishing I had an occasion to wear it. It’s gorgeous. I got away with no bra but you could do the sticky cups, too.

Olivaceous Floral Print Dress – Wearing XS. Love the contrasting colors. It may run a little small. Waist was a little tight, but it looks amazing. This silhouette is incredibly flattering.

[BLANKNYC] Chambray dress – Wearing XS. I posted this on my Instagram stories (@theunbosom) and it was very loved. SO much so that I almost ran back to the store to get it. It’s on sale, so I might. Gorgeous!

Endless Rose Babydoll Halter dress – Wearing XS. I’ve been wearing this color nonstop for the past few weeks. Love the babydoll style of this dress. That hem detail is my favorite part.

Bardot Ruffled Floral Print dress – Wearing XS. I found this slip asymmetrical dress to be beautiful. Love how the side and back look. The front is shorter, so if you’re tall, I would size up for extra length.

Denim and Other Stylish Items

Jeans – Mother Tripper Distressed Cropped flares – Wearing 24. I’m not usually a 24, however I’ve found that with stretchy jeans you can size down. They were a little tight on the waist, but I think it can stretch. These are seriously the jeans of my dreams. So freaking flattering. I’ve been wanting to try Mother Jeans and now I’m going to start saving for a pair. I think it’s worth the investment.

Top – Generation Love Becky Mixed Ruffle sleeve tee – Wearing XS. This pretty yet easy top caught my eye immediately. Love the mix of fabrics and textures. So pretty for a girl’s night out or date night. And I should mention easy to dress up or down. It runs a little oversized.

Mother Stunner Step Ankle Fray – Wearing 25 – Another Mother pair, but in a skinny fit. It’s long, so I would just measure and cut the same length in both front and back to keep the step hem. Stretchy and comfy.

Top –BCBG Ruffle-Hem Eyelet  – Wearing XS. Easy breezy top. Love the wrap and loose fit. It has the snap to avoid any wardrobe malfunction and also looks great with denim shorts or jeans.

J Brand Natasha Button Sky High Skinny Jeans – Wearing 25. Absolutely love the higher rise in these. Rise is 11.75″ in a size 26. Sometimes I wish there was an ultra-mega high-rise that covered that wrinkly belly button, so I could at least once wear a crop top without worrying. As with most jeans they are long on me. Obsessed with all the buttons that make them so unique. I just noticed they also come in a lighter wash, and I’m obsessed.

Marled Off-the-Shoulder-Ruffle-trim top – Wearing XS. It’s a really special top. The neckline and cuffs are elasticized, and the length is great to wear both tucked or untucked. I always love tucking it.

Jeans – Mother Tripper Cropped flares – Wearing 24.

BCBG flounce-hem vest – Wearing S. I needed an XS for sure. This is an amazing top layer for the season. I love it over a simple dress, but also over shorts and a camisole.

Conclusion

I loved this try-on session. Even though I got overwhelmed getting a good grasp of everything, I enjoyed checking out other brands and trying on pieces I normally wouldn’t. I loved affordable brands (usually under $100 with more special things that don’t usually go past $200) like Bardot, BCBGeneration (BCBG Maxazria is more higher end), [BLANKNYC]. They offer good quality, and great designs for less than other brands.

I should also mention that Bloomingdale’s offers free shipping when you become a loyalist (no charge) and free returns for everybody. You also have 365 days to return from the shipping date. Not bad, right?

  1. Thanks for this — I love a Bloomingdale’s sale! Regarding a mega-ultra-high-waisted jean, may I recommend the Madewell curvy high rise skinny in Lucille wash? I have these, and despite my being 5’8″ and long-waisted, they cover my belly button. Maybe it’s the curvy fit, I dunno. Thought I’d share!

  2. I have the J Brand Natasha jeans and they are the best jeans I’ve ever owned. I’m thinking of getting another pair and chopping them off into shorts. I just wish they weren’t so expensive.
