Chic North Face Jackets For Guys and Gals

There’s been a ton of chatter about winter coats lately – warm, cozy and fabulously chic winter coats, of course, so I’m thrilled to share my (our) latest finds.  I finally broke down and bought a long, Chicago-style puffer coat (words cannot express how much I hate to be cold), and Mike?  Well.  We finally found a winter coat (a Majorly Warm Winter Coat) that looks amazing over his suits.

And because The North Face is killing it right now, I also found an insulated raincoat I’ve been wearing nonstop to school drop-off (it’s such a pretty color – you may have already seen it on my instagram feed, @shanachristine)….and also what Mike and I learned about his lightweight down jackets and SIZING.

Let’s do this.

Outfit Details

Mike –

The North Face McMurdo Parka II, Waterproof Coat (size M, Mike’s typical size) – this thing is amazing.  Easily one of the warmest winter coats Mike has ever had.  It will be perfect for walking to work (over the South Street Bridge) all Winter.

Hugo Boss Suit

John Varvatos Slim Fit Shirt (now 40% off)

Similar skinny tie

Shana (me) –

The North Face Metrolina Down Parka with Faux-Fur hood (color: weimaraner brown) – size XS – despite the terrible choice of name (seriously, North Face) this coat is stunning.  It’s ever-so-slightly shimmery AND completely waterproof and I couldn’t be happier.

Free People Turtleneck Mini Dress (size xs, and I hemmed it 3-4 inches)

Nine West Over-The-Knee Boots (now 40% off!!)

Outfit Details

Mike –

The North Face Olos Quilted Jacket – Size S, for reference.  In order to get the jacket to fit nice and slim, Mike had to go down an entire size.  The Medium (his typical size) was huge and boxy.

Wallin and Bros Slim Fit Flannel Shirt

Similar shawl-collar sweatshirt

Citizens of Humanity Slim Fit Jeans

Ugg Australia Waterproof Boots (lined in fleece, really comfortable and totally waterproof – Mike is obsessed with these boots.  He wears them with jeans or suits on bad weather days.)

Vince Skinny Rib Turtleneck (size XS – now 40% off)

A Few Thoughts on The North Face

Nordstrom had asked me to take a look at their (very extensive) North Face collection.  There’s lots to love, and a few that were quite a disappointment.  Since I tried on most of the line, I thought I’d share my favorites, as well as some that I’d totally avoid.

A huge thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post!!  I had been floundering over the winter coat issue for a while, and was so freaking thrilled to find that The North Face has some seriously warm options with a decidedly urban vibe.  And readers, thank you for supporting the retailers who help support The Mom Edit.  It doesn’t go unnoticed, and is so very appreciated.

  1. I just bought The North Face “‘Bridgeton’ Waterproof Wedge Bootie,” and I think they’re cute and comfortable, plus they’re waterproof. A lot of reviews complained about how they wear, but I was willing to give them a try because again, cute and comfortable AND waterproof.

  2. I love Carhartt coats for men. Hip, classic, rugged, and a much bigger variety than the barn-type jacket we are all familiar with. It’s a brand my anti-hipster, country-boy husband and I can agree on. And the new Carhartt store in Detroit? Fantastic! Men’s Gift Heaven.

    • I second this. I work in construction so when my husband (who works in IT) mentioned getting a Carhartt all I could think of was their work ones, but the one he got actually looks sleek and manly without being something I’d see all day at work.

  3. Hmm…really liking those Sorel boots. I’ve been on the hunt for some winter boots this year that aren’t big and clunky but still warm and waterproof and Sorel has been at the top of my list….just haven’t made a decision yet….but the ones in this post are really cute…..may have to think about them some more. 😉

  4. What’s the color of the down jacket you’re wearing in the first set of pics? And the color of the Sorels in the other set? All look great.

  5. So…my feet get obnoxiously cold. I can’t even. The Sorrel insulated boots look warm but ugly. These look cute but are they warm? Like really warm or warm for such cute boots? Inquiring minds…
