Found: The One Pair Of Shorts I’m Totally Comfortable Wearing To Any Event

There have been so many times I wanted to wear shorts to something like a graduation, but then had to change because it felt inappropriate to actually wear shorts. Not that I’m trying to rock super-short shorts to graduation parties or anything, but length can be tricky. With shorter shorts I find myself pulling at the edges when I sit down because there’s so much exposed skin, and with longer shorts I find myself ripping them off in dressing rooms because they look way too dowdy to be flattering in any way. (Shopping for shorts is always fun, isn’t it ladies?) Which is why I was so happy to find these 7-inch shorts from White House Black Market. They’re designed with suiting-inspired tailoring, so they aren’t big and baggy like most longer shorts, but fitted and slimming. They’re the perfect shorts to wear when you need to dress conservatively, but it’s hot out (and you may or may not have to run around chasing a toddler). They come in regular and petite sizes (free shipping and returns on petite sizes!), and the petite 6’s were perfect for me. (I’m 5’4″ and usually wear size 28 in pants.)

The styling becomes really important when you wear longer shorts because they are more conservative. In this case, I opted for bright lips and strappy heels to offset the conservativeness of the rest of the outfit. I wore a black top to keep the look monochromatic, and added an elongated sleeveless blazer (another good option for conservative dressing for summer). I’d be totally comfortable wearing this outfit to any grad party/church event/baby shower, etc., and I’d still be able to get down on the floor with Ozzie.

Outfit Details

top: Convertible Camisole (small, also in petite sizes) – the perfect layering piece. It can be worn layered like I did or the cami can be worn on its own.

vest: Pleat-Back Vest (2R, also in petite) – this is an awesome option for summertime. It’s tailored but lightweight and has a slightly elongated fit. It can be layered over a long sleeve shirt if your office is too cold or conservative for bare arms.

shorts: 7-inch Smooth Stretch Shorts (6P, also in regular) – LOVE that these come in petite sizes (which are recommended for women 5’4″ — me — and under). The length was perfect for times when I want to wear shorts without worrying about showing too much skin. They’re modest without being dowdy.

shoes: Patent Leather Strappy Heels (tts) – I love the ankle strap on these sandals! They feel sturdy and are well-made. My usual 7.5 sandal size fit perfectly.

bag: Crossbody Phone Case – I love this little bag. It holds my phone and essential credit cards, and can be worn as a wristlet or across the body (the chain detaches). Small enough that it’s easy to throw into a diaper bag and I love that it’s hands-free.

Not a Shorts Girl?

These High Rise Skinny Crop Jeans come in classic or curvy fits, both in three different lengths and petite sizes, so you can find the perfect fit. They do run a tad big, so I’d order one size down (I’m normally a 6/28 and here I’m wearing a 6 short and should have gone with a 4 short). They aren’t too rigid, but stretchy and unrestrictive and the high-rise means no muffin top. (Reviewers love them.)
