It’s here!! SUMMER!! THIS is why we live here. Right on the shore of one of the most beautiful lakes on Earth. This is the time when any day can turn into a spontaneous picnic day—whether that picnic consists of yummy food or just a good bottle of wine. There’s literally nothing better than watching the sun setting over the water, sitting with your favorite people, hearing the laughter of your kids playing, feeling the warmth of the sand beneath you . . . I feel very thankful this time of year. It makes the long winters worth it.
I’m especially thankful right now for my mom, who seems to have found her joy again. After losing Dad, there was a time when I felt as though I had lost her too. My mom, who had always answered the phone laughing, would answer the phone with an emptiness in her voice. My mom, who had laughed at my stories like I was the funniest person on earth, had a vacancy in her eyes whenever we talked. My mom, who had dreamed of travels and adventures with Dad, wanted to stay home. We’ve all felt the loss of my Dad, but mom lost a piece of herself when she lost the love of her life.
It takes time. It took a whole year of firsts. Dad’s first birthday, their first anniversary, our first Christmas — all without him . . . some days were harder than others. Slowly, but surely, glimpses of Mom came back. She visited Shana in Philadelphia, she went to Europe with the family. She welcomed Ozzie to the world and played with Greenlea. My personal favorite, she would have wine with me and we would talk. Sometimes we would laugh and sometimes we would cry, but always we would talk about how lucky we were. Lucky to have had Dad for as long as we did, lucky to have family we love, and lucky to still be here. Together.
So as we were sitting on the beach, drinking our wine, taking these pictures, I reveled in my mom’s laughter. That joy she’s always had for life—it’s back. Her laughter, her smiles, her awesome bear hugs (Lord knows how such a tiny woman can give the best hugs), they’re all back. And of course we miss him. We’ll never stop missing him. And there won’t be a day that goes by that we don’t think of him. And some days will be harder than others. But life will go on and we’ll get to enjoy wine on the beach. And there will be laughter in our future.
The Best Bracelets for Beach & Beyond
Victoria Emerson’s wrap bracelets are my favorite. They’re comfortable to wear and can be adjusted to the size of your wrist (like if you have tiny baby wrists like my mom, they’ll still fit). They come in a TON of colors and the best part? They’re on sale right now—buy one, get one. YES. Right now I’m obsessed with her Boho Cuff bracelets. They’re perfectly coordinated, multiple bracelets in one that are easy to put on and take off with a magnetic clasp. Unlike actually wearing multiple bracelets, they don’t bunch up on one another but always look perfectly layered. I will definitely be taking advantage of the sale for more of these.
Now through July 7, everything on Victoria Emerson is Buy One, Get One! No code needed. See my favorites below.
