My friend Amber saw me in this outfit and said I looked “very Anine Bing”. I’ll take it. I was going for that sort of rocker-cowgirl vibe. I even tried tying a little bandana around my neck, but that was very decidedly too much. Like a bolero tie or giant western belt buckle, the bandana, I suppose, must be used with caution.
Actually, that’s not the best example. I would argue that the bolero tie must never be used at all, but I might be in the minority on that one.
But this slip dress? THIS I’ll wear with wild abandon. I wear it in the summer with sexy sandals, and in the winter with tights and boots and turtlenecks underneath. It’s one of my husband’s favorites, too. Even when, I’ve learned, it’s all covered up with t-shirts and denim jackets and things. It’s the silky stuff, I think.
How I’m Wearing Slip Dresses & Western Boots
Outfit Details
dress: Fleur du Mal Cowl Neck Slip Dress (xs for reference) – This is pricey, but is so versatile (and gorgeous) that it’s met my cost-per-wear several times over. I’m a 90’s girl, though, so a slip dress is something I really will wear forever. My dress is available in a few different colors (or a shorter length) — see shopping widget below. I also rounded up other gorgeous slip dresses at the bottom of this article (this Cuyana one is probably the most similar to mine).
tee: old, but this Country Roads tee is singin’ my song. Also, there’s Aerosmith (you’re welcome). In general, Free People’s selection of graphic tees is my go-to.
jacket: Free People Denim Jacket (size xs for reference) – this thing is quickly becoming my fav. Not only does it work over dresses, but I’ve been wearing the heck out of it with jeans, too. (Blue ones.)
boots: Paige Willa Chelsea Bootie – walkable heel, super comfortable. I love these. But if they aren’t your exact thing, I’ve rounded up more options at the end…
bag: Clare V Chou Chou – bought this in the Black Friday Shopbop sale…and have been using it ever since. My fav.
choker: NINOBrand (still one of my most favorite jewelry pieces I own). If you’re looking for something much more affordable, this Free People one happened to catch my eye.

Just an FYI : the ties are “bolo ties”. Bolero is a musical genre.
Your boots look really really great with that style/length dress. I would love your keen analysis of the situation- Is it the longer shaft that doesn’t cut your leg length? The color of the boot or the slightly Western pointed toe? I can’t figure out why THOSE boots work?!? Thanks!
Zara is doing tons of dresses in this style at the moment. I bought a nearly identical one to yours in a golden yellow colour in the fall, but they currently have a polka dot version, pink, I think a purple one without the cowl. For people just looking to test the waters on this, under $50 is easier to swallow than $450+.
Oddly enough, this site never features Zara (or H&M), which is too bad. But I imagine it’s because Zara does not have an affiliate program. But yes, agree that Zara is ideal when you want to test the waters on any look.
I love the look! And your pictures in Philly make me miss home, sigh.
