When I think of accessories, the first thing that pops into my head is Lizzie McGuire on Disney Channel. Think: approximately 45 butterfly hair clips, multi-layered necklaces, bracelets, earrings and the occasional bucket hat that Lizzie and her BFF, Miranda, wore. I wanted to be them SO badly.
Be Bold: Jewelry, Sun Hats, Birkenstocks & More Fun Summer Accessories
Thankfully, my style has evolved (although I’m still salty that the Lizzie McGuire reboot was shelved) and so has my accessorizing. Over the past decade, my accessories have become more demure–maybe it’s age, maybe it’s babies (it’s definitely babies). With my two eldest past the grabby/slobbery stage, I have a desire for color…and lots of it. If you’re not ready to break out of your neutrals clothing-wise — or even if you are — I’ve found that accessories are a great place to play with bright and bold colors. Here’s a roundup of 12 accessories to freshen up your summer style.
1| Anthropologie Cat-Eye Sunglasses
These Cat-Eye Sunglasses from Anthropologie are a muted red — retro and bold but not too bold (if that’s not your thing). Also, cat-eye never goes out of style. If you’re ready to take it to the next level, try these red heart-shaped sunnies or these funky oval sunglasses that come in orange or lime.
2| AAKS Tia Raffia Bucket Bag
Candy-colored bags are IN this summer. What better place to start than Black-owned business AAKS and their gorgeous Tia Raffia Bucket Bag? Delightful warm hues and plenty of space to hold #allthethings. As you know from my Cape Cod Packing List Blog, sometimes I don’t know if I look like a mom of multiple kids or a doomsday prepper with the sizable bags I am seen with. This would definitely signify that I’m stylish — either way.
3| Cream LipStain Liquid Lipstick #91 By Sephora
A bold lip is my favorite accessory. #91 Indian Pink was my fave when I did a roundup of a bold lipsticks a few months ago, and I’m still wearing it! I’m a fan of Sephora’s collection of Cream Lip Liquid Lipsticks because they are available in a wide array of colors, are long-lasting and relatively inexpensive. Play around and find your summer shade!
4| Madewell Bandana
Hair flair is a go-to of mine for easy accessorizing. The Madewell Bandana is perfect for a cute “Rosie the Riveter” moment. It’s also long enough to loop through most jeans and used as a faux-belt. Here I am wearing one of Madewell’s Bandanas in a polka-dot pattern as a headband. It’s a total vibe.
Tee | Jeans | Bandana | Sandals (similar)
5| Anthropologie Electra Fringe Bracelet
The Electra Fringe Bracelet is a delicate bracelet with a hint of color. Perfect for stacking and available in lime, coral, pink and turquoise. Make it as bold or demure as you want it.
6| Polymer Clay Earrings by BR Design Co
I can’t talk about bright accessories without talking about BR Design Co. This small, Black, woman-owned business makes literal sunshine in earring-form. ALL of their earrings make a statement. I love these Olivia Earrings because although the pink is very pink, the texture is what really captures your eye. I own several pairs of earrings from BR Design Co. like these English Garden earrings (similar). I’ve also been eying the Papaya earrings for ages.
7| Free People Packable Wide Brim Hat
Oh, you had me at packable hat. This Shady Character Packable Wide Brim Hat is available in a slew of colors, but why not throw caution to the wind and get it in vibrant citron?! One thing’s for sure, no one in your crew will miss you on the beach.
8| Adidas Colorblock Crew Socks
I love a sporty accessory, and these Adidas Originals Pride Crew Socks are perfect for my newfound love of hiking (ok, I’ve hiked once, but, it counts…right?). These socks are a great way to punch up your black and white sneaker game. You can also level up with a bright pair of kicks like these red Adidas or these hot-pink Chuck Taylor high-top Converse sneakers.
9| Anthropologie Picnic Floral Scrunchie Set
When it comes to scrunchies I am 100% Team Burger (sorry Carrie Bradshaw). I don’t disagree with the Sex and the City lead on much, even I would have picked Big over Aiden because I too love emotionally unavailable men, but her anti-scrunchie stance is not one I can stand behind. Scrunchies are back, they are cool, they actually hold your hair in place (what a concept!) and are an easy way to add some color to your outfit. I love the colors and patterns in this Picnic Floral Scrunchie Set from Anthropologie. These definitely aren’t your mama’s scrunchies (sorry mom).
10| Skagen Aaren Kulør Rubber Strap Watch
These Rubber Strap Watches from Skagen comes in a bright array of colors, but the minimalist style really speaks to me. The red in particular really pops. I know we’re all wearing Apple watches now, but I sort of miss a classic watch that just, you know, tells time and doesn’t scold me for not exercising enough.
11| Tess + Tricia Daisy Drop Huggie Hoop Earrings
I am so into any jewelry featuring resin flowers. These dainty huggie earrings will make your summer wardrobe feel as fresh as a daisy (see what I did there).
12| Birkenstock Arizona EVA Sandals
Do sandals count as an accessory? I’m saying yes, especially waterproof sandals for the summer. Birkenstock Arizona EVA Sandals come in a ton of fun colors, but I like this pair because they remind me of watermelon, a quintessential summertime treat.
Bold, bright accessories are on-trend for summer and an easy way to incorporate color into your wardrobe. As a famous philosopher once said (ok, again it was Lizzie McGuire), [accessories] “are what dreams are made of.” Or something like that.
x, Meredith
Love all of this! Instant joy in these colors
Thank you! The colors made me happy to 🙂
Some great picks here! I love these bright colors. It’s like you can’t help but feel happy in these colors. 🙂 I know you already have a bag represented here, but I think you’ll really like this one, too. It comes in bright and sunny yellow and orange (as well as two other colors.) I love this look–so perfect for a day at the beach! https://beachcandyswimwear.com/products/water-resistant-beach-bag
