Of all the times of the year to get excited about creating a little wishlist…fall is it for me.
And here is where my brain suddenly gets stuck on fall things and I get distracted. I legit couldn’t think of what to type next because apple cider donuts popped into my head and then that’s all I could see. Haha.
It’s cliché, I know, but gosh I love this season. I love saying a big ol’ BYEEEEEE to summer. I really do.
A Fall Capsule Wardrobe Wishlist
I could seriously look at jackets and boots all. day. long. Anyone else? Those are the real outfit-makers in my humble opinion. Hi fall and jackets…I’ll always love you.
I’m enjoying seeing some really classic pieces pop up this fall…like double-breasted blazers…belted even…gorgeous knee boots, cowboy or cowboy-inspired boots, oversized tops, flare jeans…it’s a whole new ballgame from last year’s…sweatpants. But have no fear. This girl is like slow-rolling into some of these trends. Honestly, my typical approach to these things every year is to try some trend-inspired pieces instead of worrying about hitting the trend head-on. Feel me?
01 | A Classic Blazer
I’m loving seeing these throwback blazers, and gah — the styling at Banana Republic right now is seriously spot-on. This one is getting low in stock but this one from Express has the same vibe and might be easier to layer and belt, honestly.
This rag & bone jacket has been on my wishlist for years now. It’s just so gorgeous, and the color is perfect for this year especially. As a green-eyed gal, I love all the green we are seeing! I’d wear this with my jeans and high tops, but also when I find some sweater pants, this would be the perfect complement. LOVE. Investment piece for sure, but a style that never seems to be out of style.
03 | A White Button Down (That Actually Fits)
I wound up getting this in while I was putting this post together and friends…best ever. Doesn’t gape at the bust. See my full review of it, plus two outfit ideas in my recent article.
04 | Maybe A Belt?
I say maybe here because me and my shorter torso have an issue with belts. I adore how they look over the blazer above but not sure whether it’ll work for me or not. I’m thinking I’ll probably stick to a shade similar to what I’m belting, but I love the look of this Madewell option in classic cognac leather.
05 | Cozy Sweaters
I’ve had this cozy one for a bit now, and I am just counting the days until it’s cool enough to wear it with everything. It’s so, so soft. Looking for a bit more budget-friendly option? This one is adorable and a similar fit.
06 | Black, Non-Skinny Jeans
OK, these are a closet staple from me, but I can’t seem to get enough of them. Straight leg black-washed jeans are my jam. I am loving this pair with the knee rips since my fav Re/Done I’m wearing a ton right now don’t have any distressing. The name of these indicates they have a slight flare at the bottom, but this looks just up my alley and not too flared…
Heh. But here we are with actual flares. I’m on the fence about this. I’ve even since tried these from AE on and styled them up and…I’m still on the fence. They’re on my wishlist because I’m curious! And even though they were fun to style up, I’m still not sure I’m ready to wear them anywhere yet. Stay tuned for a post with them styled a couple of ways. This pair is a cool $59, too if you also want to dip your toe back into flares.
Like many things I’ve been wearing for the past few years, I’m kinda over the typical jean jacket right now. I want something different. I have a great ivory chore jacket I love right now that has been a good replacement, but I’m wondering if a jacket in an interesting rich fall color might do the trick? This one from Free People just came in, and I’m trying to think of ways to style it up to see if I’m right.
I’m saying pull-on style here because I’m digging the wider, non-fitted knee boots right now. More of a riding boot-esque vibe…worn with sweater dresses, knit skirts, long cardigans layered with white button downs.
I lived in Nashville too long to ever want to put full-on cowboy boots back on my body (love you, Nashvegas) but western-inspired boots are always my jam. This year I’m considering either shorter-than-cowboy-boot height OR knee height boots like these beauties by Matisse. Both read more elevated to me than actual cowboy boots, as do suede pairs and those with some — but not a ton — of stitching. I’d style them with the same knit dresses and skirts I mentioned above, but love that they would give a more casual warm vibe to the outfit.
These are just a rad combo of a Chelsea boot (my forever love), Docs and biker/harness boots. So rad! I like my chunky boots paired with oversized sweaters and jeans that are a little bit loose but not super-slouchy (since I’m shorter and that can be overwhelming.) When I try to wear my Docs with a plaid shirt this year, I just feel like I’m leaning too trendy. I want to find a good pair of black, looser utility-style joggers to wear with my black boots. Stay tuned for that challenge!
12 | Bags With Chains
Chain details are always rad, but I’m so digging them right now. I have three pairs of shoes with giant chain details (these and two colors of these,) and when I saw this bag I almost drooled. Ok, that’s dramatic but I really like it.
I love this. I’m still not quite sure how I’d style it but I’m thinking — surprise — straight leg jeans and high tops or chunky boots. The oversized thing I adore so much, but because I’m on the shorter side, sometimes it’s tricky. I just need something different than all my more fitted, regular ol’ graphic tees I’ve been wearing forever. I need something new, and I think something along these lines is it.
What’s on your fall wishlist, friends? This year is fun with more trends than the matching sweatsuits of 2020, but it’s also a bit tricky wading through some of these that we literally wore in high school, yeah? Haha. I mentioned taking trends and using them as a bit of inspiration instead of trying to copy them exactly, and that’s definitely my game plan. If you’ve found any great pieces that echo something here let us know in the comments!
