Michigan Winters are no joke. As any Michigander will tell you, we take our Winter Wardrobe Very Seriously. Our closets are typically packed to the brim with cold weather essentials necessary to survive until…April. Surviving a Michigan winter is one thing, but THRIVING is a WHOLE other story. It means always being on the look-out for fun and inventive ways to add style, warmth and versatility to our winter closets so we don’t look and feel as blah as the weather.
Winter Outfit Rut? Enter The Oversized Plaid Shacket, In Red
The plaid shirt jacket from Anthropologie has become the must-have layering piece in my closet this winter, the one piece that single-handedly revived my winter outerwear wardrobe. This shacket is the perfect ‘in-between’ piece that is lightweight enough to layer under a heavy winter coat on extra frigid days, yet is warm enough to function as a jacket layered over a sweater or tee when the weather warms up.

Mad For Plaid Layers + Wear-With-Everything Hiking Boots
I’ve been pairing my plaid shirt jacket with my Jeffrey Campbell hiking boots and coziest knit sweater — I especially love the mixed prints of plaid + Fair Isle.
And I’m not the only one leaning hard into plaid: plaid shackets seem to be everywhere at the moment and come in tons of different colors, lengths, thicknesses and styles to help complete just about any look this winter. I love the warmth and fun they add to give otherwise basic outerwear collections some much needed color and life.
Winter Outfit Details
Shirt Jacket: Donna Red Plaid Shirt Jacket (s) I have to admit this is by far my favorite plaid shirt jacket. The whole outfit is inspired by Anthropologie; they have some of my favorite plaid shirt jacket styles of the season. It’s great quality, super-warm and the colors are gorgeous and vibrant in real life.
Sweater: Free People Alpine Crop Mock Neck Sweater (m, runs large) My mama got this for me for Christmas and she definitely knows what I love. Like most FP, this sweater runs LARGE, especially in the sleeves, which are extra wide.
Jeans: Patched Jeans (similar) The ones I’m wearing are old, old, old, but my favorite in stock patchwork jeans are from A&F. I’m also loving these light-wash options from Reformation.
Boots: Jeffrey Campbell Finches Hiking Boots (7.5, runs large) These are a great pair of everyday hiking boots to throw on with jeans. They have lugged soles and extra tread so they are great in snow.
Beanie: Hat (Similar)
