The Big Day: 3 Classic & Comfortable Adoption Day Outfits (Reader Question)

We are LOVING these amazing style questions you’ve been hitting us with lately! We {heart} helping our readers who trust us with their special occasions and most precious moments, especially those like this one from N.:

“My family is a licensed foster family. Two years ago we were blessed with fostering newborn twins, and they have been running our home, making us laugh, bringing us joy, and making ALL the messes ever since! They are adorable and wonderful and we are finally nearing the date when we can adopt them. Our family of six will all get dressed up and head to the courthouse for the big day where we finally become a Forever Family.

I am definitely documenting the day with tons of photos, friends, and family. My question for you is: What should I wear? I don’t really want to wear a dress or skirt. I am going to be carrying toddlers around all day. Without question, I will probably be covered in somebody’s snack before the day is through.”

This one was a labor of love, in which most of the TME Team chimed in with their suggestions, so here’s what we came up with! Thank you for including us in this most special day for you and your family.

Dressing up + chasing toddlers = couture conundrum. SO, we've got 3 classic outfits to help you feel comfy & look special on Adoption Day. YAY, Mama!

Blouse – Dot Stripe Blouse Drape Sleeve Blouse, on sale now at LOFT – This blouse (as well as the inspiration for this entire outfit idea) comes straight from Shana, who’s loving all the monochromatic palettes right now. This light blue blouse with sweet dots is a highly rated, bestseller at LOFT where all their tops are currently on sale.

PantsCitizens of Humanity’s Velvet Rocket Crop High Rise Skinny Jeans, on sale for $118.00 at Citizens of Humanity. I love these gorgeous dark blue slim fit, ankle cropped pants from CoH. They’re one of my all-time favorite brands for jeans/pants. They just fit so well. *Update* Unfortunately, they’ve sold out but you can find them in black here.

Booties –  Bella Vita’s Elka Bow Booties, $109.95 at Nordstrom. LOVE the bow back on these deep blue Bella Vita booties. The ratings are pretty stellar too.

Necklace – Custom Children’s Name Linked Circle Necklace, $36.00 and up on Etsy. Etsy has sooo much cool and creative customized jewelry made specifically for moms, like this bestselling necklace that can be engraved with each child’s names. I thought it would be fun to include some of my top customizable options from Etsy in each outfit to wear on a special day like this.

Dress – Josephine Ponte Dress, $140.00 at Boden. We know you mentioned not wanting to wear a dress, but Shana HIGHLY recommends Boden’s Ponte dresses. She basically lived in them when Raines and Pax were toddlers because they’re so comfortable, stretchy, easy to move in AND most importantly, covered ALL the lumps and bumps seamlessly.

Wedge Pumps – Cole Haan Lacey Cutout Wedge Pumps, 60% off for $72.00 at Nordstrom. I’ve recently become a Cole Haan convert. Their shoes are just soo comfortable and well-made. I love these wedge pumps with a stylish cutout design because they’re easy to walk in.

Earrings – Starburst Frontal Hoop Earrings, $59.00 at Nordstrom. Gorgeous cubic zirconia crystal hoop earrings. They also come in silver.

Necklace – Customized Family Birthstone Necklace, $30.60 on Etsy. Another favorite customizable necklace option from Etsy. This one includes a birthstone for each child’s birthday along with a hand-stamped, gold first name initial pendant. Dressing up + chasing toddlers = couture conundrum. SO, we've got 3 classic outfits to help you feel comfy & look special on Adoption Day. YAY, Mama!

Jumpsuit – Eliza J Balloon Sleeve Jumpsuit, $158.00 at Nordstrom. I always love a good jumpsuit for dressier occasions, because they’re flattering, comfortable and no-fuss. Plus, I love the balloon sleeves on this one, plus it’s well-reviewed.

Sandals – Louis Et Cie Punya Wedge Sandal, $99.95 at Nordstrom. These wedge sandals go perfectly with this outfit — they’re gorgeous and they’re well-loved by customers. If you live in a colder climate and need a more suitable cold-weather option, I love the ‘Willa’ peep toe wedges by Sudini.

Bracelet Cuff – Badass Mama Hand-stamped Cuff, $24.00 on Etsy. My favorite bracelet because all mamas are bada$$ mamas, especially foster care and adoptee mamas.

Hoop Earrings –  BaubleBar’s Aerie Threader Earrings, $28.00 at Nordstrom. My all-time favorite earrings currently at Nordstrom (and I looked at them allll doing research for my last post and this one).

Thanks again for including us on such a special day. Sending all the positive thoughts and wishes your way!

  1. Congratulations N! I wore an outfit very similar to the second one on the day I adopted my daughter, with boots instead of wedges because it was COLD, and it was perfect.

  2. So glad this article proved helpful! Thanks for the feedback! And congrats Allison & Lynn on both of your adoptions as well! My heart is full!
