It must be the strong 90s influence lately, but I’ve been really craving khaki pants. I know. But I spent a majority of one summer in the early 2000s wearing the lightest weight khaki pants and a crop top, and it was basically the perfect outfit.
There’s something to be said for that crisp, cool khaki. The ones I had were actually made out of poplin, and were the crispest and coolest of the bunch. Poplin is having something of a comeback right now (I swear, those old khaki pants are juuuuust around the corner), but the shape of the moment is decidedly more feminine than the old khaki pants and the usual button-down shirts. J.Crew is especially killing it right now, with cute poplin skirts and flirty little dresses.
I love that this J.Crew skirt has a rather fancy silhouette (but long enough to sit on the grass without fear), yet the fabric (and color) balances it with a dose of casual masculinity. (HA! That last statement is ridiculous, but I’m sticking by it.)
Normally I’d wear it with a graphic tee, but since we’ve been doing these all-neutral style challenges, I fancied it up with a denim button-front tank.
top: Pilcro Seamed Denim Tank (size 2) – stretchy and cute. Perfect for some unexpected denim-on-denim action, too.
skirt: J.Crew Belted Pull-On Midi Skirt in Cotton Poplin (size 2) – this skirt does come in other colors, but I was really surprised by how much I loved the classic khaki color. It also comes as a really gorgeous halter dress, too, but I found the neckline a little too modest for me. I’ll admit that the dress is insanely flattering, though.
