Wrap dress: The most versatile kind styled two different ways

When I think of a wrap dress, a mid or long-sleeved one comes to my mind immediately. However, there’s a more versatile kind of wrap dress: the sleeveless or strappy one! In my humble opinion of course.
The reason I think this is because it can be worn in the peak of summer but also in way cooler weather; and for a very casual outing but also to the office or special event. And all that thanks to the endless layering possibilities. If it weren’t for the rain, two whiny kids and some horrible humidity and heat I would have shot more options.

Before I write anything else I need to mention I wear this mid-thigh short panty under so I’m not worrying about flashing anyone when doing all the mommy stuff. They are super comfortable to wear all day and provide a little mid section smoothing. Once it gets really cold I switch for tights or high-waisted leggings. Also all my layering tops are cropped so I can easily nurse my baby. A regular length tee would work just as well if you aren’t nursing.

1. Out and about with the kids

If you are my Insta friend you may have seen this wrap dress more than a couple times. I’ve worn the t-shirt + dress combo a lot this summer because the t-shirt makes most dresses casual. I’ve been really excited about wearing dresses that were in the back of my closet waiting for a specific occasion to venture out into the city with both kids or go to the aquarium. I’ve worn it with flat sandals, loafers or mules but to take it into fall I added low heeled ankle boots and a bomber jacket. I love how the bomber jacket breaks the super feminine vibe a little.

This kind of outfit makes me feel put together, when I’m actually a hot mess all the time. I actually reply with a “NO, no, no, no!…don’t even think that..I’m a mess” when other moms comment on how cute and put together I look. The truth is I do it for me, to set my days in a different direction not to disguise people into thinking something I’m not.

Wearing:

Dress – ASTR the label (just sold out) Very similar  TTS Loved the silk feeling, color and print. Don’t love so much that the button in the wrap doesn’t work for women with large breasts. It closes perfectly with my regular boobs, but with my milk boobs? Forget about it. Tried to size up but then it’s too big.  That’s why layering something under is a must for me and gives this dress so much wear. You can’t beat the price and how  beautiful this one is, however I found some more cute sleeveless wrap and faux wrap dresses at the end.

Jacket – Chelsea 28 (sold out but check this one out) – Wearing an XXS, I sized down so it would be shorter. I’m petite. This is a lightweight jacket perfect for fall. As you can see in the pics It has hook and eye closure, something you may or may not like.

Shoes – Sam Edelman Petty Chelsea boot (20% off..part of Shopbop sale)- I sized down half-size. I love the velvety suede ( it looks so good) and the low comfortable heel. The black ones look amazing too!

Top – Amazon – Only fitted crop tee I’ve been able to find. Love the fit. They run a little bit small, so size up if you don’t want it toot tight.

Bag – Rebecca Minkoff medium Keith Satchel – Love this bag. It’s gorgeous and the color is more versatile than what I initially thought. Great for fall. It’s spacious but not huge so keep that in mind. Would have loved that it came with a zipper.

Sunglasses – Kate Spade Candida Aviators 25% off

Necklace – Amazon collection Wishbone Gold Necklace One of those random Amazon buys, but I wear it all the time.

2. Date-night or office or just because you want to look fancier.

Layer a mock-neck sweater under and add heeled ankle boots and you’re ready for the office or a night out. Layering a turtle-neck or mock-neck never gets old and makes anything fall appropriate. Even though I do this with sleeved dresses, I like it more with a sleeveless wrap dress more. Even in winter time, I wear one of those Uniqlo heat t-shirts under and I’m really warm without a lot of bulk.

Another option I had in mind was a different color palette. I had an off white crop sweater with taupe sock boots, again due to my circumstances I couldn’t shoot it.

Shoes – Vince Camuto (old) – Croc pattern black boots have become a staple in my closet. Find some great similar options below. Two are in the same price range as mine and the other too are more high-end. I’m also obsessed with these patent ones that provide the same feeling to the look.

Top – Asos (sold out) – This one is identical and comes in white too. This is an amazing layering piece for pregnancy and breastfeeding. I was pregnant most of the winter and wore it all the time under dresses, now I wear it as a nursing mom.

Bag – Rebecca Minkoff medium Keith Satchel – Love this bag. It’s gorgeous and the color is more versatile than what I initially thought. Great for fall. It’s spacious but not huge so keep that in mind. Would have loved that it came with a zipper.

Earrings – Edwardian Ear Crawlers – Forgot to take a detailed pic of these. I dont really wear earrings, big at least and these crawlers are so beautiful and delicate.

After my oldest was born, I found myself wearing my old tank tops and yoga pants everyday. I had a ton of unworn clothes in the back of my closet and had a little voice in my head saying "why look nice if you're going to be home nursing a baby around the clock?" Now, after change of mindset, I apply my fashion design studies to my everyday craziness and document the things I try here on The Mom Edit and my own blog The Unbosom.  If you can't find me in the bathroom hiding from my kids, I'll be on Facebook or Instagram @theunbosom begging for bedtime!

  1. Inspired by your previous post about wearing cropped tops, I found that American Apparel has nice fitted crop tops in a few colors, in both short sleeves and sleeveless styles!
