Four Ways To Style A Camel Sweater-Blazer

I had mentioned, weeks ago, that I had purchased J.Crew’s Open Front Sweater Blazer.  I’m constantly on the hunt for a good knit blazer – all of the polish of a structured jacket, but with the comfort of a sweater – and I have a tendency to wear the heck out of these pieces (work, travel, school functions, date night, even school drop-offs if I want a little polish).

This particular one caught my eye because it looked vaguely like this Theory topper I bought last year,.  I mean, OK:  it’s not nearly as fabulous, but… might be better for daily use, since the Theory jacket skews a little more firmly into outerwear category, and I’d argue that this J.Crew piece is decidedly a sweater.

Anyway, you be the judge.

I had several readers ask how I’m styling this particular piece, and if you follow me on Instagram (@shanachristine) you may have seen these pics before.  In any case, here are the four outfits that have been on repeat these last few weeks…..(expect lots of sneakers).

With Stripes

I love the cardigan with shorty-shorts and sneakers.  Stripes, because I always wear stripes.  (And tan and red just rock my world lately.)

tee: Saint James Breton Striped Top

shorts: One Teaspoon Denim Shorts (similar)

shoes: Adidas Superstars

sunglasses: Tory Burch Cat-eye Sunglasses

With High-Rise Jeans and Rocker Tees

I love the proportions of a really high-rise pant and longer cardigan.  And of course, rock tees make everything better.  (These are my new fav jeans, BTW.)

cardi: J.crew Open-front Sweater Blazer (xxs)

tee: Junk Food Band Tee (similar)

jeans: GRLFND x Revolve Jeans (size  25 for reference – I think these run a bit small.  There’s no stretch, but they will soften up with time and get realllly comfortable.  Kind of amazing.)

shoes:Adidas Superstars

Black tank, black jeans, tan sweater – this one always works.  Even with sneaks.

cardigan: J.crew Open-front Sweater Blazer (xxs)

tank: Graphic Tank (similar)

jeans: AG Jeans

sneaks: Adidas Superstars

sunnies:Tory Burch Cat-eye Sunglasses

On Date Night, With a Silky Little Top

I mean…’s kinda perfect.  Polished and comfy, and an offset to black lace and silk.  I think a giant clutch would look better here than the crossbody bag.  Next time.

cardi: J.crew Open-front Sweater Blazer (size xxs)

tank: Free People Cami (xs)

jeans: AG Jeans (similar) (size 24 for reference)

shoes: Free People Cecile Boots

Once the weather cools, one can wear it with black turtlenecks, skinnies, and OTK boots – just like my Theory topper.  But until then, it’s a pretty great throw-on-over-everything kind of piece.

Hope this helps!

  1. I was inspired by your earlier post to order this blazer. It’s a lovely color and weight and the fit overall was good but FYI those shortened sleeves- which are kind of an odd length but look fine on you- just looked goofy my 6’ frame.

  2. I was a little unhappy when I realized how short the sleeves were (at 5’10, I’m a little paranoid about things being too short), but they’ve seriously grown on me. Plus, I sized down so everything doesn’t look so bulky and odd. Love this sweater!

Love this! At first, I wasn’t that impressed with this blazer, but the more I see it, the more I think I need it! It’s totally grown on me. As per usual, you look fabulous in every outfit!!

  4. I had tried this blazer on last month and it just hung on my little shoulders. But I saw another more structured, classic sweater blazer in a beautiful claret color and it just arrived today. Winner! True to size, long enough, and stretchy enough in the arms. That’s another option for you.

  5. I was luke warm on this sweater blazer when I first saw it, but that date night look—-spot on girl! I’m off to JCrew!

  6. The article you have shared here very awesome. I really like and appreciated your post. I read deeply your article, the points you have mentioned in this article are useful.

  7. I’m glad others commented about the sleeve length. I’m a bit of a T-Rex and these were short even on me haha. Does anyone know if the sweater softens up a bit after wear? It’s much heavier weight than I anticipated. Very well made but feels a bit bulky right now.
