An Everyday French Outfit Formula

Whenever I start to feel like I have nothing to wear (even though my closet usually tells otherwise), I tend to turn to Instagram and scroll on through, longing to find something fresh, yet simplistic and effortless. Now, literally every time I do this it never fails that I end up on landing on a French gal. Every single time…aaaaand I really shouldn’t be surprised by this. It’s easy to instantly be drawn to the ease of their style — how it looks like they simply rolled out of bed (no alarm clock…they’re too dégagé for that, no?), slip on the few items of clothing draped over a chair, and stroll out the door…looking impossibly good, yet without the appearance of having thought about it at all.

They just are. So cool and…French.

A bit irksome to the rest of us? Maybe, but it’s not an unattainable look.

The attraction of French-girl style is it’s simplicity and ease, right? So it should follow that it not really be formulaic. You just pull a few pieces out of your closet, and well, put them on. At least, that’s the idea, and how I’ve come to my own iteration of it, which is probably one of the most seemingly basic outfits I can throw together — black top, a pair of my favorite jeans and a low heel. Voila!

All I need now is a glass of vin and a cigarette…

the outfit

top: Daily Ritual Slouchy Turtleneck (TTS, wearing small) — this is probably my favorite everyday top right now. It’s comfortable, fits well and is at an affordable price point.

jeans: Everlane High-Rise Ankle Jean (TTS, wearing 27) – obsessed now. When I first tried them on I was a bit meh about them, but the more I have worn them, the more I appreciate them. There’s just something so simple yet sophisticated about the fit. I can wear them with most anything, too.

shoes: Vaneli Aliz Slingback (Pudding Napa Black, sized up a half-size, wearing 10) – great slingbacks…and the most Chanel-looking I’ve been able to find (catch my post on them?). I like that the heel is small and they can be worn with jeans. Perfect.

bag: Sole Society Clutch (old one) – I just came across their Tasia Convertible Clutch, and it is chic and effortless, so…perfectly French. I also like that it can covert into a crossbody bag.

sunglasses: BP. Cat Eye Sunglasses – I like these, for a cheap pair of shades. I will say, though, they feel a bit weird…when you touch them, if that makes sense. Maybe it just bothers me, but consider these BP. Cat Eye with a hand-polished finish.

Cheers,

Cams

This outfit is perfect! You look fab and I’m loving the jeans and top. I think I will definitely try a pair of Everlane jeans. They look so great here!
