The Search For My Favorite Ivory Sweater

Each fall I seem to search for the perfect, beautiful, ivory sweater to wear all winter. There’s just something gorgeous about a lovely ivory sweater that you can throw on with your comfy jeans, or dress up for cold date nights out, or layer over your favorite plaid shirt. The problem is, I’ve yet to land on the perfect one, so I decided to try a few on for size! Literally! Haha. OK, let’s get on with the sweaters, please.

J.Crew Donegal Wool Pullover

PulloverJeans | Boots

J.Crew Donegal Wool Pullover – I love the color, the heathered yarn, and the shoulder shaping of this one, but it was just too boxy on my short torso to be flattering. It didn’t have enough drape to tuck very well, which looked better. I am getting so picky, y’all. Haha. Wearing a Small in Ivory Donegal.

Madewell Balloon Sleeve Cotton Pullover

Madewell Balloon Sleeve Pullover – This one is super cozy. I love the shape with the shorter length and the cute balloon sleeves. But something about it just wasn’t quite what I was looking for. Maybe the shape isn’t classic enough? Wearing a Small.

Everlane The Cashmere Waffle Square Turtleneck

Cashmere Waffle Square Turtleneck | Jeans | Boots (similar)

Everlane The Cashmere Waffle Square Turtleneck – This one. I’m obsessed with. So cute and not too boxy, plus flattering and soft. I love the split hem and the slightly longer back length. It’s also reasonably priced for cashmere at $155. And I’m a huge fan of buying from Everlane, who has great business practices. This is a solid find. Wearing size Small. TTS.

J.Crew V Neck in Softest Yarn

V Neck | Jeans | Boots

J.Crew V Neck – I love a V neck on me and tend to gravitate towards those most often. First, I ordered the shade “Heather Natural” in this sweater, and though it looks OK here and on their website, in person, it’s a very dirty shade of ivory. Not awesome. But this sweater is SO awesome. Wearing a Small.

V Neck | Jeans | Boots

J.Crew V Neck – So, then, I ordered the same sweater in color “Natural” and liked it much better. I was able to dress up this shade more easily for my recent train trip. I had to dress warm and comfortably, but look for ‘concert chic’ that night in Seattle. Think: cold train, walkable shoes that are fun, AND a raincoat. Yeah. That was a tricky outfit, but it worked! Not pictured is black cami underneath, which was nice to have on later at the show. Since then, I’ve been wearing this sweater a ton! I even ordered it in navy, too. Wearing a Small.

LL Bean Signature Cotton Fisherman Sweater

Fisherman Sweater | Jeans | Shoes (same brand)

L.L. Bean Signature Cotton Fisherman Sweater – This sweater is adorable. It has that classic vibe you get from a company like L.L. Bean (of course). It’s a nice heavy cotton and feels so substantial. It gets great reviews. I like the cut of this best out of all of their fisherman-style sweaters, but I will say the yarn here is not super cozy. It’s not itchy like wool can be to some people, but I’m not sure if it will soften or not. I’m totally comfortable in it though, and I don’t have a tee or tank underneath. It’s classic and flattering and I love it. Is it THE ivory sweater? Jury is still out. Wearing a Small. TTS.

  1. I’m really excited that you are featuring a sweater from Everlane. I recently discovered this company and would love to know more about how their clothes fit…I’m trying to purchase more from ethically responsible businesses. It would be awesome if TME could do a segment on more business like this…Everlane, Grana, Naadam…I know Shana focused a lot on Reformation this year…just to name a few (that I know of). With your platform & given the state of the world it would be refreshing to see more stories about companies that are trying to make this world a better place. Thanks!!…FYI, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only person that has a hard time finding ivory sweaters that are flattering…think I’ll go with the Everlane sweater!!

  2. I have the same problem! Every fall I search for the perfect ivory sweater and always come up short. Just purchased the Everlane one! And you inspired me to finally purchase a pair of leopard booties to wear with it. Love your posts!

  3. Ever since I raided my dad’s sweater chest and stole his ivory fisherman’s sweater in 1995, I’ve been on the hunt for its replica. Soft, slouchy, classic. Land’s End sweaters seem promising.

  4. I agree, the LL Bean is my favorite in you. I have that same sweater and it has held up so well. The 100% cotton isn’t the coziest, but it does soften somewhat with wear and washing over time. I love that it does not pill, ever. It looks as good as when I first bought it years ago.

I have another I ivory sweater that I love, try the Free People ottoman sweater tunic in cream. It’s such an awesome sweater, I have it in 3 different colors. It’s the same sweater that Cam featured last year in tomato red. It’s 40% off at Nordstrom right now. I’m debating on getting yet another color, ha.

    • Oh awesome, thank you! And great to hear about how the cotton sweater holds up. Maybe I will hang on to this one! It is so classic and well-made. I’ll have to check out the others.

  5. I love the v-neck sweaters but my go to ivory sweater is a fisherman sweater from Ireland. I got mine years ago at the Irish shop near us. It has totally stood up over time, still looks good and is warm and cozy. It’s wool, but I don’t think find it itchy at all. I use it as a coat sometimes, it’s that warm. Now, if only J. Crew would bring the classic wool roll neck back, all of our problems would be solved!! Haha!

  6. I’m always looking for the perfect cream colored sweater too. For me, the search is tricky though because I’m allergic to wool and I live in Phoenix so it has to be something on the lighter side.
