Some may argue that the entire TME team has a serious slight denim addiction. And it’s true – Shana’s the ringleader of it all. When she came in to the office the other day beaming over how she found the “perfect high rise black jeans” I, naturally, bought them on the spot. Ugh. Working for a fashion blog is not easy on your wallet. #gofigure.
But hey, I love my new jeans. (And I’m not in denial about my crazy clothes spending habits. Not at all. $$$)
On a serious note – black denim is all over right now. Doesn’t it feel so model-off-duty-chic? (did I just make that up?) Plus, it brings some real versatility to the pieces you already have and love. Wear them with your coziest sweater and sneaks for daytime or dress them up with a sexy top and heels for date night. Run your errands around the city in your favorite tee and..you guessed it: black jeans. Want to keep it comfortable AND night out appropriate? The answer is black jeans. The options are all there, right? And that, is why you need these in your life.
If you’ve yet to find the perfect pair for you, don’t worry. Even we’re overwhelmed by the thought of all. the. washes. and all. the. rises. etc. Collectively, our team has tried a ton and even surveyed friends (you all remember Linz, right?) to narrow it down and pass along the pairs we’re wearing ourselves.
Here’s how we’ve broken it down and the five pairs we think are THE BEST. Trust us, it’s no exaggeration. These are amazing. Check out our picks for best wash, best high rise, best for wider calves, best distressed & best budget pair and why right here:
The Best Black Denim Right Now
- MOTHER The Flirt Chew (Shana’s Pick for Best Wash) – She said these are perfectly faded with a modern straight leg cut. Pair ’em with your go-to booties for juuust the right proportions. Oh – and MOTHER jeans are soft and great for wearing daily, FYI. They’re not too stiff and hold up well in the wash.
- rag & bone/JEAN High Rise Ankle Skinny (Gwen and Shana’s Pick for Best High Rise) – (It’s Gwen) rag & bone/JEAN may be my favorite brand. They fit perfectly on the butt, just stretchy enough but not SO much that they sag ..like ever. and always come in great washes. This is the pair that Shana came home with and I promptly ordered for myself. Still not regretting it. True to size.
- Lucky Brand Hayden High Rise Sculpting Skinny Jean (Linzi’s Pick, Best for Wide Calves) – Linzi was super excited about these. She texted me a full report (love that about her). She called these a “nighttime jean” and said they suck you in (which she likes) but she also suggests going up a size. These work well if you’re working with a little extra booty or calves.
- AG The Legging Ripped Super Skinny Jeans (Shana’s Pick for Best Distressed) – Shana’s tried and true faves. If you haven’t heard her wax poetic about these jeans (or any AG’s for that matter) you’re missing out. She’ll totally have you convinced that you need them. They’re just distressed enough, not overboard and the perfect not-too-black wash. For a real idea of the color, they’re featured at the top of this article. She lives in these.
- Madewell 9″ High-Rise Skinny Jeans (Laura’s Pick for Best Budget Pair) – She says “The 9″ is the perfect rise for me, not too high not too low and they hold their shape so well. I loved their slightly faded black wash, too.”
Not feeling any of the pairs shown above? Try these on for size…

Xo!

Scott’s love for mall brands is amazing. I love all the TME contributors style but lets face it, priorities mean I can always purchase $200+ jeans. Looks like I’m off the AE tomorrow for some new black jeans.
She really finds the best stuff! Hope you had some luck at AE, Jess.
I had great luck with these!! HALE Women’s Bri Sculpted High-Rise Skinny Black Destroyed https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073BHQWWW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YxMcAbRW2T5ZJ
Lots of good options with the brand — HALE by AG — and under 50 bucks!
Wow these look amazing.
I was wondering if someone would mention HALE jeans! I totally just searched “black jeans” on Amazon one day with the hope that I’d find something good, and I took a chance on these exact jeans but mid-rise. I really like the fit, the stretch, and the PRICE. I will probably buy more HALE in the future.
Love it! Especially if they’re prime shipping..Someone on our team will have to try.
I have these and I love them:
https://m.levi.com/US/en_US/products/299570002?camp=CAGPLA_DF:299570002032:LEVI
I sized up and they are perfect- nice high rise and a slim straight leg.
Levi’s are kind of amazing once you find the right fit/style. Thanks for your comment!
I’m loving these: https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-high-waist-black-denim-jeans?collection=womens-jeans
Are you?! I may have to try some Everlane denim, too. Thanks for the suggestion!
What is your stance on black denim flares? I have a pair of black flea market flares from Madewell from last year (two years ago?) and I can’t decide hoe I feel about them now. They’re great pants and very flattering, I think, it I’m just not sure. Thoughts?
I still love my black denim flares!!!
So happy to hear you’re still on bored with flares. I just bought a pair of Current Elliot Girl Crush black (tar) flares that I LOVE!
Yay! I’m kind of digging them, too. They feel more “dressed up” to me or something. Looks like I have my outfit for Thanksgiving sorted out now! Win!
Loveeeeee black denim flares
Im with Shana I love the fit of AG jeans and both Frame and Mother jeans are staples in my closet.Until recently my Jcrew toothpicks (found through TME) have been my fave black denim BUT then I found the citizen of humanity high rise SCULPT rocket skinnies. These are the perfect high rise jeans! They stretch, lift, and smooth while making your legs look miles long. They never say and I don’t spend the day pulling them up. I’ll admit they’re a bit pricey but when you put ’em on it’ll feel like you’re in your coziest sweats, they’re SO soft. https://www.citizensofhumanity.com/womens/all-womens/skinny/rocket-high-rise-skinny-in-distressed-darkness LOVE LOVE LOVE!!
Good to know about the Citizens! Once you find the perfect pair, it’s worth an investment, right?
Thanks, M!
This is the pair I reach for over and over. Soft, perfect rise, and I hacked the hem (damn short legs) using the TME tutorial and they’re perfect. https://www.shopbop.com/farrah-skinny-ag/vp/v=1/1570422658.htm
Yessss love that your cropping was a success! I have the Farrah’s too – they’re amazing right? Thanks Maggie!
I wear Eileen fisher’s organic cotton black skinny jeans.( Similar style: https://www.eileenfisher.com/legging-jean-in-organic-cotton-soft-stretch-denim-f7mdn-p3868-vintageblack/?&color=2283. ) So comfortable and flattering! I followed Shana’s video tutorial on how to cut your skinny jeans to work with boots. They work great with all of my shoes. Thanks Shana for the help!
Everything Eileen is just so comfy isn’t it? So glad the tutorial worked for you. Keep an eye out for more videos coming soon (:
Yes, so comfy! I’ll look forward to more tutorials. Thanks!
I bought some skinny ripped black jeans from Express last year. They are high rise, have loads of stretch (but don’t stretch out!) and are soft and unbelievably comfortable! So comfortable that I’ve worn them on a 4 hour long flight. I know, I was shocked too! I’ve worn them with stilettos in Vegas and trainers for errands. I’m feeling very cool that I’m already in on this “trend” 😉
Such a fan of Express! And you can definitely get away with wearing them comfortably for hours. Thanks for reading, Rachel!
I love H&M shaping skinny jeans! I have both high & regular rise and even the regulars are high enough so that I can squat down at the playground without flashing everyone. At 5ft 10in this is not often the case with regular rise ? They even have a maternity version that I lived in for both pregnancies, looked fabulous and made me feel svelte (not easy when carrying a 12lbs baby ?) I have not tried the 360· shaping ones though. They sell for $49.99 but I just saw that some are on sale for $29.99 right now. I seriously swear by H&M jeans. They fit great and last.
I’m totally intrigued by the whole “shaping” idea – those sounds amazing…..Thanks Hanna!
These are the most comfortable Old Navy Rockstars I’ve ever purchased:
http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=85732&pcid=85729&vid=1&pid=288711002
The link is not to the exact pair I own. I bought the ankle version of this jean in summer and I keep wearing them. If you’re looking for a low priced gem, these are perfect. (I can’t say all Rockstars I’ve purchased are comfy… sizing and overall fit have been all over for me, but I love these!)
Oooh very good to know! Thanks, Amber
Btw, I love your name. My seven-year-old is also Gwen. 🙂
Aw! Great name choice (;
I am short … I have a problem with high-rise fits because I feel like the bottom of the zipper hangs like five inches past my crotch. Suggestions? I’m 5’0 … thank you!!
Hey Cindy, S is a little bit taller than you but suggests a mid-rise instead! Hope that helps.
Looks like I am going to have to bring out the #shanamademedoit again on the Rag and Bone jeans, ha!
Hahah #shanaalwaysmakesmedoit
I’m in love with these that I bought at the Nordstrom sale. Perfect amt of stretch and higher waist. May have to check out those Mothers.
https://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/citizens-of-humanity-rocket-high-waist-skinny-jeans-black-echoes/4622582
Those are an amazing option for a darker pair! Thanks for the comment, Melissa
Black jeans are my go to for everything! You can dress them up or down.
My favorite brand is Gloria Vanderbilt! They wash well, fit well and the price point……you can’t beat it!
You guys have to try the Madewell roadtripper jeans. I’m OBSESSED.
https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/DENIMBAR/highriseskinnyjeans/PRDOVR~G7392/G7392.jsp
I have them in black and they are really comfortable, more jegging than jean in feel, but more jean in appearance. I am honestly debating buying 3 more pairs. And, as a bonus, then are like 60% the price of the rest of Madewell’s denim (which I also love).
Topshop Jamie Moto. I’m 5’0 and the inseam is pretty dang perfect. High rise but still ok for me!
