Everyday Dresses That Only LOOK Fancy

I’m all for a pretty dress.  I’m even happier when that pretty dress is also stretchy, soft, and comfortable.  And while I’ve been no stranger to the glamorous maxi in years past….this year the ante has been upped, and the comfy, everyday dresses of yesteryear (or last year, for the less dramatic) have suddenly gone all INTERESTING.

We’re talking a subtle pinch-and-drape situation so the dress lays just so….or a side-slit, a knot, unexpected necklines or strategically placed cut-outs, to name just a few details that have caught my eye.

Full disclosure:  the dress I’m wearing below is my favorite.  It’s by Susana Monaco, and it’s made out of a soft, stretchy jersey that’s thick enough to skim over a few lumps and bumps.  The cut-out is actually not nearly as scary as I thought it would be (well placed, Ms. Monaco) but…..this dress is almost completely sold out.  There’s a size or two left at Shopbop (here), or try Amazon (here).  Sorry gang – I had thrown it up on my IG (@shanachristine) and everybody loved it.  If anyone restocks, I’ll let you know.

And don’t worry – I do have several other solid dress options – some of which I own, others I just tried on to verify their comfort.

 1. Try A Dress With Unexpected Details

If You Like This One, Try…

This is a hard dress to replicate, so I tried to round-up options with a similar flirty vibe, dramatic one-shoulders, and/or unexpected details.

ps. If these below aren’t rocking your boat, skip down to the next section – I rounded up a bunch of cut-out dresses that might work….

2. Maybe a Sexy Cut-Out Dress?

I’m obsessed with Monrow’s cut-out dress, too.  There’s something about that side cut-out that manages to hide what I want hidden, but still feels daring.  I think this dress would look even better on someone with actual curves.

I looked for ones with strategically placed cut-outs.

3. Maxi Dresses With Unexpected Details

On tall girls this Paige Perrine dress might be closer to a midi dress, but on me, it’s perfect.  The neckline is sexy without being too much, and I love the way this dress drapes.  I wore it to a blogging conference last month – you can see it on my IG here.  I’m wearing an XS, for reference.

4. The Not-Quite Bodycon Dresses

I love the v-neckline of this Monrow Side-button dress (so flattering for a larger bust), and the buttons. They make an everyday dress a little more interesting, and this shape is especially flattering for curvier figures.

5. Wrap Dresses Forever

This LOFT wrap dress is so romantic and pretty….and it’s just a jersey knit, so it’s also soft and easy to wear.  This style of dress will always be a classic.  I always feel so feminine twirling around in one.
