Friends. I’m on a search for a Spring jacket. What keeps popping up in my search is bomber jackets (although, I’d like to request a name change: flight jackets, yeah?). Were the original style (brown suede leather flight jackets, oversized of course), a thing when y’all were in junior high? Omg. Everyone had one at my school for some reason. We wore them over our giant college sweatshirts, probably with our Umbros (smh) #the90s. Turns out though, bombers are back. But thank goodness this time they are more flattering, offered in better colors and just all around more chic. (Was anything chic in the 90’s?)
I was loving the idea of a cool black flight jacket as an updated option for Spring (black for every season, of course). I thought I could throw one of these on instead of my denim jacket or as a lighter version of my moto jacket. So, I ordered up some options to try on, per usual, and here’s what I found.
Levi’s Bomber Jackets
Turns out Levi’s makes the style I was most drawn to…the actual flight jacket cut. I ordered a few different (albeit, only slightly different) styles to try. The first two are the same jacket, but in two sizes and colors. The third is a similar shape, but unlined/lighter weight style with contrasting stitching on the pockets.
Levi’s Flight Jacket (quilted lining) (XS) – This is the style and shape I was really searching for: fitted, black, not too puffy and oversized. I only went with the XS because they were out of the S, but it works. The shoulders are slightly more fitted than I might usually choose, but I think it’s more flattering. Our spring weather is fairly cool still, so the lined jacket makes sense for me to throw on over a tee. You might want to check out the third Levi’s jacket if you’re in a warmer climate.
Levi’s Flight Jacket in Navy (quilted lining) (S) – This is the same jacket as above, but in a Small in Navy. It’s super-cute. I honestly considered going with this when I first tried it on. The lining is a bright orange which is so fun. This fits looser and probably more comfortably, but to me isn’t the shrunken-ish (technical term) fit I want.
Levi’s Flight Jacket with Contrast Pockets (unlined) – This is really cute and a great lighter weight, but I was thrown by the contrasting color around the pockets (it’s ivory). The zippers are also quite chunky on this one; I think they stand out too much for what I was looking for. Wearing a Small.
Other Brands’ Bomber Jackets
Alo Off-Duty Bomber – I like the idea of a shorter jacket, but the collar comes up way too high and something about this fit is off (for me). I honestly think this is quite over-priced, too, for such a small jacket. Ha. Wearing a Small.
Alpha Industries L-2B Scout Jacket – I wanted to try out another shade for some variety for you guys, in case some of you actually like to choose springy colors (ha). I like the fit and shape of this, and apparently that giant red tag is a thing because I’m seeing these jackets everywhere, but it wasn’t my top choice. It’s definitely well-made though. It might be worth trying in black, but it’s in the higher price range of the ones I tried out at $150. This is a lighter weight one, too, unlined. Wearing a Small.
Puma – Love Puma in general, but the quilted isn’t the direction I wanted to go in. I actually received this one in error, but I tried it on anyway. It’s super-soft and SO comfy though! Here’s the thing though…I cannot find this online anywhere. It must have been the last one. If I were looking for more of a track jacket style in navy, I’d go with this one.
prAna Diva Bomber Jacket – Again, the quilting wasn’t as tough of a look as I wanted, but this is amazingly soft inside and comfy (sherpa lining), except for that collar that totally cuts into your neck! Dang it. Wearing a Small.
Zeagoo Classic Quilted Short Bomber Jacket – This one is actually cute in the cut and fit and super-reasonable, but it’s stinky, y’all. I bet it would air out, but you can also tell the quality isn’t as good as any of the others. There were lots of strings inside one of the cuffs. It was worth a try, but nah. Wearing a Small.
The Favorite Flight Jacket
For me, you can’t go wrong choosing one of the Levi’s jackets. They’re all fabulously made, from first try anyway, and a great tough-ish but chic style. I like the fit of sizing down in the jacket like I did here. Plus, many of them are on sale right now. Even the full priced are the most reasonable of the bunch.
Levi’s Flight Jacket – This is the one with the lining, in XS, that I liked best.
Ag Sophia Ankle Jeans in 4 Years Faded – TTS for a curve hugging fit. Wearing a 27. I cropped these myself, btw.
