Keep It Cool and Stylish with Chambray

Free People romper (sold out) but this one is really similar, just a lighter color.

Before starting let’s just ignore my son’s face, can we? He said he wanted to be in the picture, but then he didn’t. Being 3 is hard. So hard!

Now, let’s get into chambray!! Do you agree that everything looks better in denim? My hand is way up! Is there anything better than a fabric that looks like denim but is really soft and breathable? I think there is NOT. How about you?

I’m going to do a quick explanation on what chambray is, only because during all my search I came across a lot of “chambray” things that were given that name because of the color. But chambray is not a color, it’s a fabric that happens to be very similar to denim in color. While the weave is very different (twill weave vs plain weave) the yarn combination used is the same: A colored yarn in the warp and a white yarn in the weft, which is what gives chambray the same appearance to denim.

The difference in the weave makes for the dream fabric for summer. Chambray usually has a higher thread count which equals soft, and the plain weave makes it more light and breathable. Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t lightweight denim or heavyweight chambray but I still think chambray is more breathable – Sorry I got all deep in theory, but I think it’s always good to know.

So, I went on a deep search for chambray everything. Tops, shorts, skirts, rompers, jumpsuits and dresses. I even found great chambray pieces totally appropriate for the office if you think a denim-look piece is not. Here we go:

A lightweight chambray jacket is perfect for summer!

My mission here was to find the less number of off-the-shoulder chambray tops. Not that they are not pretty but they are everywhere, so I tried to find ones that at least stood out from the others.

Bottoms (Shorts, Pants, Skirts)

Shorts and skirts in chambray are gorgeous, but pants? I’m obsessed and I think its because of the fact that I know they are soft and breathable. I don’t like to say “you should” but you should really try chambray pants!

For the Office

If you are in a casual business environment, a chambray piece works perfectly and the best part is that most of them are very easy to dress down for a relaxed casual look. If you’re in a more conservative environment, I think the color of the chambray is very important. A darker colored chambray piece styled with more conservative pieces makes for a great and unexpected look. I do that with my husband’s work wardrobe and he looks so fashionable (hot).

Did you enjoy this collection? I think I have a “chambray hangover” from the hundred pieces I saw! I might need a break from it but I would love to see how you wear your chambray piece(s). Please share.

    • Hi Maggie! Chambray is a type of weave and Tencel (also called lyocell) is a fiber. It’s made from cellulose found in wood pulp and then converted into fabric using a synthetic process. So, even though it’s called a “synthetic fiber” thanks to the natural materials Tencel has become an alternative to cotton. It’s supposed to be less prone to wrinkles and shrinkage; and more strong, soft and breathable than cotton.

That’s why you’ll find a lot of chambray pieces with Tercel composition. I hope this helps!

  1. Thanks for the explanation on what chambray is and how Tencel is different. Understanding these things is so helpful when buying clothes so you know what will last/shrink/wrinkle. Thanks for the tutorial!
