A huge thank you to Gravity Blankets & ShopStyle for sponsoring this post.
I’ve been interested in Gravity Blankets for the longest time now (pretty much since it was named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2018), but for some reason have never pulled the trigger. Anxiety, stress and insomnia are pretty much a regular part of my life though, so when the opportunity presented itself to try one, I jumped on it — fingers crossed this weighted blanket could live up to all of the hype. To say I was hopeful it would work for me is an understatement. If I could find something that decreased my level of stress and anxiety (especially right now when the world seems more chaotic than ever,) that would be a HUGE win.
Spoiler alert: it works, you guys.
Gravity Weighted Blanket: A Solution For Better Sleep & Less Stress
According to their website, “the Gravity Blanket uses the power of “deep touch pressure stimulation” to simulate the feeling of being held (like a hug!). This increases serotonin and melatonin, the hormones responsible for relaxation, and decreases cortisol, the hormone responsible for stress.” In a 2019 study over 1,000 nights of sleep, 72% of participants reported deeper, more restful sleep during the night and 76% reported falling asleep faster.
How Much Does The Gravity Blanket Weigh?
I’ll admit I was skeptical when I first pulled the Modernist X Gravity Cotton Blanket out of the box and felt how heavy it was (35 pounds feels heavier than I expected!), but it’s actually the perfect weight when it’s spread out over the entire surface of the bed. It’s actually fairly thin, too, which I liked. I thought it might slide around a bit because of the weight, but it actually stayed in place much better than our regular comforter (the one that’s often kicked off by our daughter in the middle of the night), so much so that my husband woke up for the first time in a long time with covers still on his body.
Sleeping Under The Gravity Blanket
The first night we had it on the bed, I fell asleep around 10:30 and when I woke up and looked at the clock I was shocked to see it was after 6 am. That NEVER happens. I’m usually up every few hours, needing to read for a while in order to get myself back to sleep. Ultimately, this causes me to sleep in longer than I’d like and I end up waking up groggy with the kids around 8:30 instead of having any time to myself before they get up. So when I woke up feeling totally refreshed and rested just after 6 o’clock it was like a miracle. (Miracle may seem like a strong word, but it’s been a LONG time since I slept through the night.) I can’t explain how it works, I just know that it does…when you feel that weight on your body it does something to lift the weight off your shoulders.
I love this blanket so much that we’ve taken to bringing it up to camp with us on the weekends (although there is a travel version that would make it a bit easier). I also want to buy this cozy and adorable Flannel-Sherpa Weighted Throw for the fall/winter—and maybe even as Christmas gifts for friends and family.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that the duvet and blanket didn’t arrive separately (although the duvet can be removed and is 100% machine-washable). The ties keep the duvet perfectly in place.
The weighted blanket feels nice on your legs even when you aren’t sleeping (which is why I want to get that throw)…and the Weighted Sleep Mask makes it super-easy to catch some Zzz’s any time of day. It totally blocks out the light and is super-soft, but it’s the weight that feels really nice on tired eyes. I always find myself scrunching my eyes when I’m trying to fall asleep, but not when I wear this mask.
So is my insomnia/stress/anxiety completely cured? Of course not…but this blanket is an easy, low-tech option that definitely makes a noticeable difference. One that is 100% worth every penny.
