This Embroidered $20 Dress Looks Way More Expensive Than It Is

We are apparently calling this pretty little thing a dress, but I’d like to be the one to point out that…um. How? Maybe it’s because I have some height to me and therefore think like a tall person (need more fabric, people), but I really gotta say it…this “dress” would be better off simply considered an overlay  — something that adds playful, feminine contrast to say…a basic black top & jeans.

These are the kinds of things I get all giddy and excited about. It’s not necessarily something I see myself wearing every other day, but that’s not really the point of it. It’s just FUN…and life is short, so WEAR THE FUN STUFF.

On that note, I’ve been able to play around a bit with the dress/overlay/whatever it is, and here’s what I’ve come up with…

Three Ways to Wear An Embroidered Mesh Dress

1. Throw It Over A Tank & Flare Jeans

I tried skinny jeans and even a cropped jean with this pretty overlay, and well, it fell flat for me. I then threw on a good old pair of flares, and there we go. I then was able to dress it all up by adding some heeled booties and festive accessories.

Outfit Details

dress: Verdusa Floral Embroidered Dress (no longer available), this Bohemian style is similar, as is this Round Neck Floral Dress – I don’t really consider it a dress, rather…more of a fun little tunic. I suppose some of you could wear it as a dress (cough, Shana), but not I. What I did was tuck the black tank insert into my jeans and it worked just fine. I also really like this Mesh Sleeved Dress w/ pearl beading! Cute. FYI: consider going up one size in all of these dresses.

jeans: J Brand Tailored High Rise Flare Jeans (wearing 27) – I looked everywhere for this particular pair, but they appear to be sold out. Now, I happen to love Sevens, and this pair is similar to the ones I am wearing. Amazon has a few different pairs of their flares, as well.

jacket: BlankNYC Moto Jacket (wearing size M, like a looser fit) – The one I am wearing is their version from last year, but this one is almost the same exact thing. Love that the hood is removable, too.

clutch: Magnetic Closure Clutch – This one reminds me of the Rebecca Minkoff envelope clutch, but it costs $15. It comes in a few different colors, too.

earrings: Sugarfix Tassel Drop Earrings – My favorite pair of earrings right now. They also come in a gorgeous blue and deep purple!

boots: Steve Madden booties – From a couple of years ago, but there are so many other options out there, including these Steve Madden Chelsea Sock Bootie.

2.. Layer It Over A Graphic Tee

In this case I was able to wear a straighter jean, and I’m thinkin’ it’s because of the moto boots. I really dig  the mix of edge and whimsy.

tee: Calvin Klein Graphic Tee – Sold out, but could easily wear this Calvin Klein Monogram style OR go Nike with their Sportswear Essential Tee. My whole idea was just to have a black and white contrast peeking out from underneath the mesh.

jeans: Madewell Roadtripper Jean (wearing size 27, Tall) –  THE BEST JEANS IF YOU LIKE COMFORTABLE DENIM. Just so you know ;-). I could have gone down one size in these. In fact, I just recently ordered another of their styles in a 26, and they fit perfectly. Honestly, even at 5’10, I can get away with wearing the Regular length, so if you’re in between…I’d say skip Tall.

boots: Vince Camuto Moto Boots (old, sorrysorrysorry) – I have found an even better boot, though, ya’ll! Really. I am now obsessively wearing these Gentle Souls Benton Moto Boots. I went up a half size to a 10 and they are a very comfortable fit. psst. Currently on sale and fully stocked!

bag: Small Scarlet Red Satchel (also comes in bright blue) – Great Winter bag. I can fit quite a bit into it, too. I’ve been impressed with Target’s accessory and handbag selection recently.

jacket: Levi’s Parachute Hooded Utility Jacket (TTS) – I wear this way more than I thought I would. It’s a great one to throw on with anything, provided it’s not frigid cold outside. I layer it over sweaters, sweatshirts, etc.

3. Make It “Model-Off-Duty” w/ Metallic Oxfords

I mean, any excuse to wear stretchy black pants, right? I like that the floral overlay totally makes the jegging look and feel more put together (and not like a jogging, let’s be honest). Also, any excuse to wear a metallic lace-up loafer is a good excuse in my book.

pants: Daily Ritual Skinny Stretch Jegging (TTS, wearing Small) – I shared these in my Daily Ritual post a ways back, and yeh, they’re good. I like having a pant option that isn’t jeans, but isn’t leggings. These are a nice “middle ground” option and come in really handy on the days I don’t wanna do real life.

shoes: Louise et Cie Oxford – I just came across these Botkier Calista Metallic Oxford and hollyyyy yes. If you prefer to take it a bit edgier, try these Halogen x Atlantic-Pacific Platform Derby. I’m tempted…

earrings: Sugarfix Icicle Drop Earring – An earring like this is a fun one to dress up or down.

bagSmall Scarlet Red Satchel (same bag from previous outfit) – Love a medium satchel, and the color on this one is perfect for the winter season.
